@Slide Rule

I NEVER use the self-check out line. I figure if I do,I am cutting someone desperate for additional income out of a job,and I just won't do that.

As for saving the customers money,that is Bull-Bush. What it really does is provide additional income for the corporation that owns the store.

When I go shopping someplace, either I am there for one or two things (where they have checkers) or I have two carts full, and I'm dropping $500 or more. If I tried to run all that through a self check the damned thing would screw up, anyway, so it's cheaper to just run me through the line.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

The stores that have installed self checkout already not only made the decision to cut the jobs but have in fact cut the jobs, they are more than happy to let lines grow at the manned checkout because they now it's just part of training the animals to use self check. of course if you are buying anything alcoholic like wine for the dinner you are making or beer for the barbecue you're screwed because there's no way to buy it in self check.

You know... It just struck me... I hardly ever buy beer from the grocery. Sometimes, if there is some oddity - Like Hileman's Old Style which is odd as hell to find here (or Stroh's)

But mostly, if I am getting beer it's from a mini-mart
That's weird. An oddity I had not noticed before...  :pondering:

@GtHawk

I don't buy or drink alcohol,and what I do buy is generally less than 50 bucks,and as you know,50 bucks doesn't buy much anymore.

Still,as far as I am concerned,the self-check counters will cause more people to lose jobs the more people use them.

I totally agree. I was shocked when I went to the store this week and saw them installing 2 self check outs. I live in Tiny Town and an awful lot of older people do these jobs during the day, and school kids at night. I have also noticed a shortage of bag boys. That is a combination of mentally challenged during the day and school kids at night. At one time, a customer couldn't carry out a pack of gum. And you were not allowed to tip them or they could get fired.

I was pretty upset. It could be cost saving...or it could be the inability to find employees. :shrug:

@berdie

Seems that they have at least one (1) employee eyeballing 4 to 6 machines, so I figure it's a wise investment.

What irks me these days... buying prepared 'fast' food for take out and the card reader prompts you for a 10%, 15%, "20% is better" for tips for the staff.

Who dares not to tip when they're standing there watching you?

I want to have some sense of security when I eat my food.    :shrug:
