Obituaries for 2021
« on: December 31, 2020, 01:40:18 pm »
A running thread for deaths in calendar year 2021.

This thread is only to discuss once-living organisms (humans or notable animals) that died, or whose deaths were reported, in 2021. It is NOT for those who died in years past, organizations that shut down, or abstract ideas. I hate to have to make that explicit but I thought that was something unstated and I was wrong.

㊹
Little's uniform number 44 in Syracuse and Denver, both of which have been retired.

Considered a legend in both the college and professional game, Little was inducted in to both the pro and college football halls of fame, and his number 44 (worn by Little, Davis and Jim Brown in succession at Syracuse) was retired in both places.

Little died January 1 after a long bout with cancer.

I remember Tanya Roberts from her time on "Charlie's Angels." My friends and I eagerly watched, hoping she'd do what we called a "boobs on car" scene (jumping on the roof of the car of fleeing bad guys, clinging to the windshield trim with her fingers, bosoms threatening to block the driver's view of the road).    Unfortunately, I couldn't find a photo, so there's this:

Sad to hear about Gerry Marsden. One of our (many) pictures from Mrs. S in CA's and my 2016 cruise to England was of a ferry - very colorfully painted - crossing the Mersey River at Liverpool. Gerry and the Pacemakers did some really nice music.

RIP my fondest memory of Tommy Lasorda was him stepping out of the dugout at the Stick to take a bow for knocking the Giants out of the playoffs back in the 80s. The crowd responded predictably.

Marion Ramsey, 'Police Academy' star, dies at 73

Quote

LOS ANGELES - Marion Ramsey, known for acting in the "Police Academy" films and gracing the Broadway stage in 1978's "Eubie!," died Thursday at her home in Los Angeles. She was 73.

Roger Paul of Roger Paul Inc., the agency that managed Ramsey, confirmed the news to Variety. Ramsey had recently fallen ill, but her exact cause of death is currently undetermined.

Though many may know Ramsey for her role as Officer Laverne Hooks in the "Police Academy" films, her career began much earlier. In 1964, she appeared in "Hello, Dolly!," and in the 1970s she established herself as a theater, film and television talent. On stage, she acted in "Miss Moffat," and on screen she took part in the variety show "Keep On Truckin'" on ABC and held a regular role on "Cos."

But 1984 brought about the role that would mark Ramsey's career success. With the first "Police Academy," Ramsey found a film franchise that would see her through the 1980s. She continued to act in the movies through the sixth installment in 1989, "Police Academy 6: City Under Siege."

Well Tanya Roberts has died, for the last time, and of all things the cause was apparently not acting on/or a very aggressive? UTI which spread to her kidneys and other organs. How sad is that!

Ed Bruce
Country songwriter and actor dies at 81

Bruce began his career in pop music to little success before breaking through in the country field with the seminal outlaw country song, "Mammas, Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys," which was a hit both for himself and for Waylon and Willie. Among his other hits were "The Man that Turned My Mama On" (Tanya Tucker), "Restless" (Crystal Gayle) and "Texas (When I Die)" (also Tucker). As a performer, he hit number-one with "You're the Best Break This Old Heart Ever Had," following it up with several more top-10 hits into the 1980s.

In the 1980s, Bruce turned to acting, starring alongside James Garner in a revival of the classic Western series Maverick. He was one of many country stars to appear in Steven Seagal's Fire Down Below in 1997.

Bruce died January 8, just over a week after his 81st birthday.

Illusionist Siegfried Fischbacher of Siegfried & Roy dies
By KEN RITTER2 hours ago

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Siegfried Fischbacher, the surviving member of the magic duo Siegfried & Roy who entertained millions with illusions using rare animals, has died in Las Vegas, his longtime publicist tells The Associated Press. He was 81.

Fischbacher died Wednesday at his home from pancreatic cancer, Dave Kirvin of Kirvin Doak Communications said Thursday. The news was first reported by German news agency dpa.

Fischbacher’s long-time show business partner, Roy Horn, died last year of complications from COVID-19 at a Las Vegas hospital. He was 75.

The duo astonished millions with their extraordinary magic tricks until Horn was critically injured in 2003 by one of the act’s famed white tigers. ...

Saw Siegfried & Roy at the Mirage in Vegas years ago.  At the time it wasn't easy to get tickets, but a very helpful resort concierge worked his own magic and got me a ticket.  It was the typical glitzy Vegas show, but it was surprisingly a lot of fun.   The PETA types were probably glad when the show ended after the accident with Roy, but what those loons didn't know was that the pair were heavily involved in wildlife conservation, particularly for those beautiful tigers they used in their act.

Rest in peace Siegfried.  Now you and Roy can dazzle the angels in heaven.

Harold Bornstein, Trump’s eccentric ex-doctor, dies

Quote
The shaggy-haired, bespectacled gastroenterologist first came to public prominence in 2015, when he authored a note for the Trump campaign memorably predicting his patient “will be the healthiest individual elected to the presidency.”
...
Following Trump’s upset victory in the 2016 White House race, however, the doctor-patient relationship between the two men appeared to deteriorate.
...
Tensions escalated further in 2018, when Bornstein accused Keith Schiller — the former White House director of Oval Office operations and Trump’s longtime personal bodyguard — of conducting a “raid” of his office the previous year to obtain the president’s medical records.

He was a wonderful person..I used to send him care packages when he was in Iraq...please pray for his family..he leaves a wife and 2 very young children...

My son is having a very hard time with this as they were close friends.

I’m so sorry Myst.

Phil Spector, Wall of Sound Music Producer and Murderer, Dies at 81

Quote

Producer Phil Spector, the legendary studio revolutionary of the ’60s and ’70s who ended his life imprisoned for a sensational 2003 murder, has died. He was 81.

“Phillip Spector, 80, was pronounced deceased of natural causes at 6:35 p.m. on Saturday, January 16, 2021, at an outside hospital. His official cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner in the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office,” read the statement from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

It was not immediately clear why the prison system listed a different age.

TMZ reported that he had recently been hospitalized with COVID complications.

No he had and was wearing his helmet...Ironic on his FB page his main photo is him wearing it.

He was farther north of Kenosha..the Kenosha Police Dept are going there and escorting him back to Kenosha...This has hit everyone who knew him so hard...he was a great guy.

Hammerin' Hank...

As an Astros fan back to the mid '60's, you always held your breath during his AB's. RIP slugger.

Just saw this, Myst. How awful. Will pray for the family and also for your son.
You're everywhere I go, I am not alone
You call me as Your own to know You and be known.
You are holy!
And I fall down on my knees.
I can feel Your presence here with me.
Suddenly I'm lost within Your beauty,
Caught up in the wonder of Your touch.
Here in this moment I surrender to Your love.

The sheer number of celebrities in the 50s and 60s grew exponentially with the advent of TV,  and now we're in the wheelhouse where they are starting to die off.

Mira Furlan, ‘Babylon 5’ and ‘Lost’ Actress, Dies at 65

Mira Furlan, best known for her roles as Delenn on “Babylon 5” and Danielle Rousseau on “Lost,” died on Wednesday. She was 65.

...

While a cause of death has yet not been revealed, Straczynski said the cast and crew of “Babylon 5” had “known for some time now that Mira’s health was fading.” “We kept hoping that she would improve,” he wrote. “In a group email sent to the cast a while back, I heard that she might be improving.”

However, Straczynski said he later got the call from “Babylon 5” co-star Peter Jurasik that Furlan’s husband, director Goran Gajić, was “bringing her home.”

I've seen on Twitter that Larry King and Gregory Sierra (of "Barney Miller") have died. More to follow.

Gregory Sierra, who endeared himself to 1970s sitcom fans as the genial Julio Fuentes on Sanford and Son and the impassioned Sgt. Miguel "Chano" Amenguale on Barney Miller, has died. He was 83.
