Ok, last one from the naughty file. This one goes all the way back to the earliest roots of r & r (1954). For some reason it was banned from the radio.

Great tunes from Harry Connick, Myst.  Here's one of my favorite all time singers, Sarah Vaugh

My contribution to Valentine's Day. I assume everyone has heard at least part of this song in the TV commercial, and while I have never been able to comprehend the appeal of Jimmy Durante's singing, the orchestration and arrangement on this are first rate.

I think sometimes it doesn't take a great voice to evoke deep emotions.. this song from Durante is one of those songs... it always moves me to tears.

Now one of my favorite composers. This work by him has been recorded by a host of artist. However, I picked the version by Brasil 66 'cause I like them, too.

A twofer. The first is a version of the much recorded Cole Porter "Begin the Beguine" by Bing Crosby, a singer not seen here before, I think. The second is a video of Fred Astaire and Eleanor Powell dancing to an instrumental version of the song from the film "Broadway Melody" (1940).

Incidentally the beguine is a dance that originated in the caribbean island of Martinque. That fact gives some idea of the cleverness found in Porter's lyrics.

Btw, since we are on the subject of dance, did you know the Tango is alleged to have originated in the brothels of Buenos Aires? This claim is much disputed and does cause one to ponder, since brothels main activity doesn't seem to be dancing. Interesting theory nonetheless.

As I take my departure for now, I begin "bubble gum" time. I am willing to bet Rapunzel loved this song, but then so did I as I had the hots for a girl named Paula at the time.

This song did not begin the rock and roll revolution but it was there near the beginning. Today they make a big deal about it being included in "American Graffiti", but its early popularity was in part due to its inclusion in the opening credits of "Blackboard Jungle" (1955) for which it established a hard driving, raucous pattern.

I loved American Graffiti.. have it saved on my DVR brings back a much better time in America.

My contribution to Oscar night. From 1957's "High Society", another of Cole Porter's, "True Love". Though nominated it didn't win Best Song but it's still a great work.

DC Patriot take note. In this film Sinatra and Crosby, for perhaps the only time, sang a duet.
