I could do 3, 4 months easy. But I'd have to stock up on dog food. I only keep a week or two of dog food.

I could do better than that. Good on ya... But that is little solace for MOST.

Well, remember,  it seems possible though not certain, that it could end with the end of flu season... and yes, it could come back next year. We are in uncharted territory but at least, there is that possibilty.

True, so it will be up to folks like us to take care of those unprepared people we care about. So cut my 3/4 months in half. But I live right on the water and I how to fish. No rent, no mortgage, bills are all paid and money (not a lot) in the bank. I can help a few.

I'm with ya.  No mortgage, bills are all paid and money in the bank.  I live on the water, but don't like fish.  I have a supply of dehydrated food and paper goods to last for awhile. We are helping out someone who lost their job, lived paycheck to paycheck and waiting on unemployment.

I just don't know how folks are living that are in the same boat, with families to feed ... what are they going to do?  Unemployment is going to take awhile as its backlogged -- stimulus not for 3 weeks.

I don't like to fish either, but if I get real hungry ............. I'll send one of the women to fish. LOL.

That's enough to help  you and yours... And that is my ultimate response too. We are country folks and will get by just fine...
But it ain't no where near enough. The cities start tipping over, people will be eating each other. And that is only half-heartedly hyperbolic.

That's what I'm afraid of as well.  I'm not in the country, but we've been prepared for years...I learned from experiencing our first hurricane season.  I've been preparing and have stocked up on goods ever since.  We never quite expected a pandemic - but we are as prepared as can be.  (We even have colloidal silver, sambucus and potassium iodide tablets -- but unfortunately, I've let them get dated.  Shame on me.)

Nothing to say that those who lost their jobs are going to have a job to go back to.  Unemployment is back logged, regardless of what is being said -- the program may be expanded but definitely not expedited and offices are closed for a couple of weeks.

Me too - Not as technically... Water, for instance... I have a clearwater creek right in the back yard, with its head, an artesian spring, less than a block away. But even without that, my go=bag is geared to boil water, and not rely on chemical cures.  Every container in my kit is stainless steel, precisely so I can put it in the fire... And push come to shove, I know how to make a still, and can rig that up almost as easy, so water is always covered, and not dependent on anything that will expire.

Likewise colloidal silver. I can make my own.

I can say this: Were I to have to park my old businesses, any one of them, for a month, there would be no jobs to come back to.

Clearwater creek and an artesian spring --- it doesn't get any better.  You are fortunate.

That is somewhat by design - I have never owned a property without good water on it... But also, most creeks are good clear water around here... Caution drinking out of lakes, or where beaver ponds are present, thus the inbuilt need to boil if necessary... But by and large, because I live in the Rockies, potable water right from the land is a rare problem. I carry about 1/2 gallon in my kit, because good water is seldom more than a half-day walk away.

Dunno about the whiskey - But I doubt I will get it, and if I do, it won't get me bad.
Fire cider and way more vinegar in my diet makes my body chemistry way less inviting to bugs.

Add to that, treatment with thieves oil and oregano oil are extremely effective anti-virals...
Add to that, jackin Cs somewhere around 6-8k IU a day is yet another very effective anti-viral.

And due to my arthritic problems, strangely enough, my white blood cells are junkyard dogs.

So I ain't worried about it.

Why isn't that that man on President Trump's China-virus task force?  I am ready to report for duty for a clinical study.  I'm all in, if it means keeping the America that all America loves for their children or grandchildren, and that doesn't make me brave or noble.

Too soon.
Make it May 15-30, that's more like it.
Once new infections peak, then plateau, then start downward.
That's a good ways off, yet.

Restore the population to "normal circulation" before enough time has passed, and it could "restart the infection rate", as well.

That's what the models from the Cleveland Clinic are saying.

The peak is mid-May.   Some things may get back to 'normal' (or more likely what will be a new normal) by Easter, but things won't settle out until we're on the other side of the curve.

All I can say is if you have to kill do it with kindness. Fishing is a bit different, I suppose. But you don't grab chicken by the legs and take it screaming over to the chopping block and lop off it's head. You toss down a bit of feed, and when it is too interested in that to mind you, you reach down with and expert grip on it's neck, give it a wrenching spin that rips off it's head and then throw it away from the others so it can run around like a chicken with it's head cut off and reach down for another.

I was taught to kill with kindness.  Several experts taught me how.  I would never intentionally cause pain and suffering to any animal. But I sure as hell will kill it for food.

Like knowing how to grow a garden. Or prune a fruit tree.

A lesson in will and intent.

Nah. in fact I do what I do because I do not believe the words written by men.
I do what Yah says to do in spite of what men say.

Yeah, HE did. In the First set.

...According to men.  Get that idea out of your head and you will find nothing in the NT thatoverrides the OT. Because it CAN'T. It cannot be changed, not one jot or tittle, or the one who changed it is by definition, a false prophet. Can't get around that, no matter what.

Maybe, maybe not. I don't have to know the difference. All I have to do is as he said.

Not trying to make this a religious debate. Some kind of he/she/it said.

Maybe I should blame it on being tired. Maybe I should blame everyone who didn't give me the neutron bombs when I asked.

I was gonna ask @corbe to do a poll. I isn't much of an economics major. But why didn't the Congress ask for $4 trillion and hand that bill to the Chinese Communist Party?

That’s good.

I knew that Rita Wilson had recovered but since he is a diabetic his risk factor was greater.

With all the doom and gloom that we are constantly being bombarded with, it is refreshing to hear a report that people like Hanks exist - people who contract the virus yet don't require ventilators and who don't end up as a 'dead' statistic during prime time news.

It is good news...which is why it will appear on page A22 of the NYT.

101-year-old Italian man, born amid Spanish flu pandemic, survives coronavirus illness, official says

USA TODAY
March 27, 2020

A 101-year-old Italian man has reportedly survived his battle with COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus spreading around the globe.

An official from the city of Rimini on the northeast coast of Italy says the man, identified publicly as only Mr. P., was released from the hospital earlier this week. ...

US biotech firm says its pneumonia treatment could help save the lives of coronavirus patients by 'cleaning up' killer lung inflammation

Scientists at BioAegis in New Jersey are developing a drug version of the protein gelsolin

Their small trial in mild pneumonia patients found that it helped them recover better and faster than those given standard treatments
Since coronavirus turns deadly from pneumonia inflammation, the company wants to start testing the drug Americans with COVID-19

A New Jersey biotech firm believes its drug could help save the lives of the sickest coronavirus patients.

BioAegis Therapeutics has been testing a protein called gelsolin to treat pneumonia. Gelsolin exists naturally in the human body and helps to combat inflammation like that seen in critically ill and dying coronavirus patients.

In early stages, their IV treatment has helped pneumonia patients recover, and scientists at the small firm think that deteriorating COVID-19 patients could benefit from the drug with relatively little risk.   ...

I'm doing what I can in that department, but it's wearing on me. I'm thankful to have a family support network but I'm missing a lot of things that we've lost quite dearly, and without any real answers as to when they'll be back, it only makes it worse.
Get a Netflix account or Hulu....I've been binge watching Blue Bloods....lol.  Plus preparing the garden for spring...repairing the fence....manicuring the lawn.  Beats sitting around worrying about things I have no control over.

How many people, going into this, were prepared for even a couple of months of being out of work and having limited resupply?

Empty store shelves all over still say, "Not many."

Start talking 6 months, and most people will be out of money, supplies, and likely have defaulted on any loans they have, including mortgages. It'll make The Grapes of Wrath look like a homecoming parade.
Not to mention people will be desperate and the looting will begin.

Thank you for your response.

President Trump hasn't golfed in 3 weeks.  We all know how you feel, and we all pray we will be sleeping better soon.  The President has said on many occasions and in many ways that we want to solve this with "the fewest lives lost," because "we have the best people" and we will need them when this crisis is over and we want to recover the fastest.  Unfortunately, mean ol' Dr Fauci says "the virus will decide the timeline."  I know our President wants a healthy and wealthy country to be his legacy.  I don't know if he is fit for the task, but we can't change quarterbacks today, and the good news is, as our President has reminded us in every press conference he recognizes "We have the best people."  As often as I complain about his speeches, conferences, and tweets I actually think President Trump has displayed more leadership in the last 2 weeks than his first 3 years.  He has had good days and great days since he declared a National Emergency.  His message has been remarkably consistent "follow my guideline for 15 days."  In a few days we will have an updated guideline and it will most assuredly address medical, and fiscal issues.

The reason why they can't provide real answers is because we don't have them yet.  Hopefully we will have some soon.

Stay healthy @jmyrlefuller

Hoodat, you keep posting a bunch of numbers as in reply 185 above.

I'm a dumb guy. I'll admit it up front.
Could you please explain how those numbers for US/Can/Mex should be read and interpreted?

There are two ratios I have been tracking
  • Number of recoveries to the number of deaths
  • Number of cases to the number of recoveries

The first ratio should increase over a period of time until and the second ratio should decrease.  The first ratio will eventually level out as we reach the true death rate for those afflicted, wile the second ratio will approach 1.

Green arrows indicate movement from the previous day in a positive direction, while red arrows indicate movement in the negative direction.

China's numbers (whether valid or not) at least give us a target to shoot for.  Their Recovery-to-death ratio is 74,971 recoveries to 3,295 deaths, or 22.75 to 1.  This translates to a casualty rate of 4.21 % for China.  I think we can do much better.  Their case to recovery ratio is 1.09 which means that almost all of their cases have run their course resulting in either a death or recovery.

I combined US/Canada/Mexico numbers together since we are in the same geographical location.  The three combined have had 3,582 recoveries and 2,004 deaths for 122,208 cases with over 166,000 cases unresolved.

Quote from: article
President Trump said Saturday he’s considering an enforced quarantine for the New York City area that would also include New Jersey and Connecticut.

“We’d like to see New York quarantined because it’s a hotspot — New York, New Jersey, maybe one or two other places, certain parts of Connecticut quarantined,” Trump said as he departed the White House for a trip to Norfolk, Va., to see off a Navy hospital ship heading to the Big Apple.

Well, one guy has apparently exposed much of my town to this virus this past week by visiting half the stores in town. Just what we needed.

It's a bullshit quarantine, which is bound to be the case when they quarantine healthy people, leaving the sick to spread their disease around.  It's tyranny, and it's best answered by non-compliance as time wears on.  That's why I say we'll do it, but only for a limited time.

Yes, it IS tyranny, and tyranny is always best answered right now. Even so - I will not comply, and will point and laugh at those who do. Suckers.
