Don't know if anyone mentioned this yet, but...

If you are on prescription medication and get it from Canada,  make sure you have more than enough on hand and get refills ASAP if you don't.

Reason I mention this:  A friend of mine gets a medication from a Canadian pharmacy supply company.  She waited too long and her shipment has been delayed.  So she's down o her last few pills and now she's scrambling trying to get a supply of this med here in the states.  The drugs provided by these supply companies may or may not come from Canada, but rather from other countries where there may be a problem in the supply chain, particularly if that country has been hard hit with this virus.

I noticed that the Canadian pharmacy company I use is not all that restrictive about refills as pharmacies are in the states.  For example, I get a 100 day supply of a med which I take once a day.  But unlike in the US, I can get a refill after 30 days.  Never had a problem.  So even if you think you have plenty on hand, put in your refill order as early as you can so you don't nun out.

That is all.

I'll add that the guidelines for prescribing medications were altered in one of the Trump EOs, to allow Doctors to prescribe the extra refills.

The need to stock up really ran into a wall when dealing with drugs they've been on a crusade to crush, namely Opioids.  People need those, too.

I only recently became aware of a 2011 film named "Contagion":
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contagion_(2011_film)

It can easily be "scrounged up on the net" if you know what to do.
Search for "torrent contagion 2011 1080p" and you should get the good hits.
(but then again, this ol' Mac wizard can get just about anything there is to be gotten...)

I watched it last night
It is VERY relevant to the situation that is happening in real life right now.

If you have time, check out Steven King's The Stand series.  It is broken up into four 2-hr segments.  It stars Molly Ringwald, Gary Sinise, Ray Walston, Rob Lowe, Adam Storke, Ossie Davis, Jamey Sheridan, Miguel Ferrer, etc.

It doesn't as much deal with the virus itself, but the aftermath.  Classic struggle between good and evil.  For entertainment purposes only.  Not to be taken seriously.

Coronavirus World Map - kind of interesting

You could do this same map about just about anything, colds, flu, gonorrhea, herpes,...anything.
It is a national/global thing for real, I am just not buying into it in the way some people are.

NEW: The first 62 U.S. coronavirus deaths by state and age
March 15, 2020 by Sharyl Attkisson

Note: the numbers change quickly. These figures are current as of March 15, 2020. Visit CDC.gov for the latest government information.

   * 65% of U.S. deaths were in Washington State
   * 27 of total 62 U.S. deaths occurred at the same Washington State nursing home

More at Sharyl Attkisson.com

Isn't that something? Nearly 44% of the deaths so far are in one nursing home.

That just goes to show you can't make statistics-based decisions on ridiculously small data populations.

One of my favorite lines from that movie:  "I've been documenting how much time you've wasted in my class, and it's about four hours, a very conservative estimate!  So, I decided to come over to your house and take up your time to study with you for tomorrow's Final Exam."  "I don't have my book, Mr. hand!"  "That's OK, I took the liberty of procuring an extra copy!  So, turn to page...."

Coronavirus: Doctor who heads emergency preparedness at Paterson hospital tests positive
Terrence T. McDonald, NorthJersey.com

The doctor in charge of emergency preparedness at St. Joseph’s University Medical Center in Paterson has tested positive for coronavirus and is in critical condition.

Dr. James Pruden, a Teaneck resident and a beloved fixture at St. Joseph's since 1982, was admitted to the hospital on March 6 with upper respiratory problems and cold-like symptoms and remains in isolation in its intensive care unit, according to St. Joseph’s Health President Kevin Slavin.

Pruden, 70, spoke to NorthJersey.com just last week about the hospital's preparation for coronavirus cases, saying St. Joseph's staff is "well-trained to use all of the tools and techniques to effectively manage potential cases." Pruden helped lead the hospital through a swine flu outbreak in 2009 and prepared it for an Ebola scare in 2014.

That is all.

In Venezuela, with their totally collapsed healthcare system, sometimes people take to twitter to find a drug. We can hope it doesn't get that bad.

Also, as I've already heard, truckers are being able to expand their regulatory delivery hours, if others are not working, truckers may be delivering goods, it's frightening to think of almost, there are real necessities in medicines and the like aside from the talk on lysol and so on.

Tom, I'm going out on a limb here and say I don't think this country will ever get as bad as Venezuela.  Seems to me in Venezuela, Cuba and other such countries, they always have shortages of something, particularly medicine.  I once read that Cuba's often lauded health care system often has shortages of ordinary antibiotics.  Much has to do with the socialist/communist,  hamfisted, meddling governments they have.  If they had a free enterprise system as we do, there wouldn't be the shortages, wait lists and such.

We should pray this country does not abandon the systems we have had in place for so long in favor of the broken down socialist/communist systems these countries have.

I don't see where anyone said we are going the direction of Venezuela or Cuba, your talk about medications made me merely think it could be possible that someone would go online, twitter and look for medicines during this time here in the USA. In fact,  I'm sure it has happened in so-called more abundant times.  But if one really needed their medicine, it might be worth a try short of other alternatives.

Also, sidenote, one does know, Wuhan  is the sister city of Pittsburgh, that's pretty well known.

The warmest place in the country this time of year is usually Florida and they have a lot of cases.  But, if ambient heat really is the solution, we're in the catbird seat here in Mohave County, AZ.

Hospitals Push Off Surgeries to Make Room for Coronavirus Patients

Hospitals preparing for an influx of coronavirus patients are canceling some surgeries and moving routine care to virtual visits, an effort to make room for those critically ill and prevent infections as the global pandemic spreads nationwide.

A growing number of hospitals, including Boston’s Brigham & Women’s Hospital, NewYork-Presbyterian, the main facility of the University of California, San Francisco and some major systems in the hard-hit Seattle area, are starting to put off surgeries that aren’t urgent or emergencies. In addition to freeing up capacity, doctors say they don’t want to expose patients and workers to potential infection risk.

Some hospitals are also asking primary-care and psychiatry patients and those who need other routine care to use the phone or telemedicine to visit doctors.

“The less people we have to bring or move around our community, the better,” said Ann Prestipino, an executive and incident commander for Massachusetts General Hospital, which Monday will begin switching all outpatient visits to virtual care, where possible, and will postpone surgery that can be delayed, at the discretion of each service area. The hospital and its clinics typically handle one million outpatient visits annually, she said.

When you run out of elective surgeries to push back, it still leaves urgent and emergency surgeries that can be cancelled.

In the southern hemisphere. But unless there're no journalists down there to cover the virus that region seems to be doing relatively OK.

New Zealand pretty much has it contained by my understanding. Australia, Tom Hanks got it, but we don't know where and we don't know if he's spread it to anyone.

Maybe NZ has few cases if any, I have not read about that but I do know, they've been in the news today per actions they are taking:

I'm listening to it now and will do my best.

Some highlights:
80% of people infected may show absolutely minor symptoms or no symptoms at all. 2-3% will get really sick with the lower respiratory infection.

Incubation time: 2-14 days.  Never seen anyone develop symptoms more than 14 days after exposure (average 5.4 days).

Symptoms:
 1)  98% of those who develop symptoms will have a fever. Check temp a few times a day.
2) Dry cough in 76% of those who develop symptoms.
3) Shortness of breath in 55% of those who develop symptoms.
4) Sore throat - trivial.

Why do people die (the 2-3 %)? From the overexuberant immune response. Body pours in white cells; flood alveoli. Can't get oxygen in. Depends on your ability to fight infection.

Among folks who have underlying conditions (immunocompromised by, e.g., heart disease, cancer, diabetes), in the following age groups:
60-70   4% chance of death
70-80   8%
80+      15%

What to do? Limit exposure, don't put yourself in compromising situations (cruise, travel to Italy, Asia, etc.) or where you're shoulder to shoulder with others, like at a ball game. It's droplet transmitted - keep 6' away from others. If a loved one is sick, still try to stay 6' away even while you're caring for them. Only if you absolutely have to be closer to a sick person than 6', then you wear one of the masks with a splash guard (not the respirator variety), mostly to prevent you from touching your face, and maybe goggles. You don't need a Tyvek suit or anything like that. Most folks need nothing more than distance.

Disinfection: 0.1% solution of bleach will kill the virus. Peroxide, too (dilute to .3%); Lysol spray; isopropyl alcohol. Wipe down countertops, computers, phones, door handles, TV remote, other surfaces with peroxide or alcohol solution. Virus may be able to live as long as 9 days, but possibly just 4-20 hours. Clean hands with soap and water for 20 seconds. Don't have to get hand sanitizer.

Bolster your own immune system:
1) a good night's sleep will do more good than anything else.
2) exercise
3) proper food - fruits and vegs, or at least take multivitamin daily
4) drink water

OTC medicines to have:
zinc lozenges may help with symptoms (Zicam) - but don't use nasal spray
500-1000 mg per day of Vit. C also may help (or eat citrus fruit)

This guy is optimistic without discounting legitimate concerns. The sky is not falling. This is not the zombie apocolypse.

"We are more prepared than any other nation in the world - by far!"

This is a slow-moving crisis, which buys us time to develop vaccines and anti-virals to attack it.

I'll add, if you don't get much sun exposure vitamin D3 in high dosages is a big deal. I take 10,000 IU a day and it made a dramatic difference in how often I get sick and the severity. I'm allergic to the sun so I need a lot of D3...

CDC Says U.S. Gatherings of Over 50 People Should Be Put Off

Quote
In the most extreme effort yet to slow the march of coronavirus in the U.S., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended that events of 50 people or more not be held for about two months.

For the next eight weeks, organizers should cancel or postpone in-person events of that size throughout the U.S., the agency said on its website Sunday. When feasible, organizers could modify events to be virtual.

The advisory doesn’t apply to the day-to-day operation of organizations such as schools, institutes of higher learning, or businesses -- although many of those entities have taken steps of their own.
