80+, almost a 15% chance of dying if you contract it but that still would mean having about an 85% chance of surviving.  :pondering:

This is actually pretty consistent with the data coming from China.

Iranian official involved in US hostage crisis dies of coronavirus
The speaker of the parliament claimed that the former ambassador was recovering from the infection the day before his death.
By ZACHARY KEYSER   MARCH 7, 2020

Former Iranian ambassador to Syria Hossein Sheikholeslam, 68, died on Thursday after contracting coronavirus earlier in the week, according to Radio Farda.

Sheikholeslam tested positive for the virus two days prior and was taken to a local hospital in Tehran where all infected Iranian officials are currently being treated. It is reported that 8% of Iranian members of parliament are infected with the disease.

What is the survival rate for 80-year-olds with influenza?

This won't tell you exactly since the last demographic for flu is >65, but from what I remember the >80 age Mortality is I think somewhere between 1.5-2%

I noticed that.

I'm worried about my parents. My dad will be 80 this year and my mom will be 77.

Worried just a tad myself, I am over 60.  We are curtailing our outside contact, shopping late a night at Walmart for supplies, with a pocket full of clorox wipes in tow.  I know the fatality risk is pretty low, but no need to take unnecssary risks.

OTOH, based on what I am seeing, if I was 25, the only precaution I'd be taking is making sure I didn't infect anyone else.

Trump says campaign rallies won't stop over coronavirus fears

by Rob Crilly

March 07, 2020 08:48 PM

PALM BEACH, Florida — President Trump said he had no plans to scale back his campaign rallies and was not concerned about the new coronavirus reaching Washington, D.C.

Speaking to reporters at Mar-a-Lago, ahead of a working dinner with Brazilian President Jair Bolsanaro, he was asked whether the emergence of a case at last month's Conservative Political Action Conference would force him to change his mind on holding big campaign events.

"We'll hold tremendous rallies," he said.

Earlier, it emerged that a D.C. man in his 50s had been hospitalized with COVID-19, the disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, but Trump said he was not worried about the disease's proximity to the White House.

“I’m not concerned at all,” he said.

FDNY issues order pulling back firefighters from calls describing coronavirus symptoms; says it is prioritizing responses

By Ginger Adams Otis, New York Daily News 2 hrs ago

A department order issued Friday says 911 calls for asthma attacks, fever, coughs and difficult breathing will be handled by the Emergency Medical Service.

Fire companies with certified first responder training that would normally accompany ambulances are being to stand down, the order said.

“Effective immediately, the following call types will temporarily not receive a CFR response,” states paperwork obtained by The News.

Italy Locks Down the Country’s North to Fight Coronavirus

MILAN—The Italian government is locking down 17 million people—more than a quarter of its population—including in Milan, the surrounding Lombardy region and 14 neighboring provinces, in the most sweeping steps any European country has prepared to take against the coronavirus epidemic.

A decree from the Italian Prime Minister’s office says people living in Lombardy, where Milan is the capital, and the named provinces in Lombardy’s nearby regions must “absolutely avoid any movement into and out of the areas.”

Police, emergency services and if needed the army will be available to enforce the quarantine. People violating the lockdown can be punished with a fine or jail terms, according to the draft decree.

Excerpt, interview. US Scientist Clifford Lane interviewed:

Quote
Quarantined at home now, U.S. scientist describes his visit to China’s hot zone
By Jon Cohen  Mar. 6, 2020 , 1:00 PM

National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases

...

Q: What was eye opening to you on the trip?

A: I’d never been to China. I was really surprised with how modern the cities were, and how high technology was in many of the places we visited. The briefing rooms at China’s CDC [Center for Disease Control and Prevention] with these multipanel screens and multiple displays of data was quite impressive. And cities with 15 million people, that’s like, no big deal.

Q: What about the epidemic response itself?

A: There was a completely unified perspective of how this virus was the enemy, and we were launching an attack and we’re going to defeat it. I heard it from the governor of Guangdong province and then we would go to a market, and a community center, and they would be telling us the same thing. And [health officials] were rapidly evolving their approaches. They were on, like, version six of their guidelines for treatment, and that was impressive to me that they were moving that quickly. They were also aggressive in their intensive care, using ECMO [extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, a method that artificially oxygenates blood for a limited period] and people were surviving. If you could maintain someone long enough—I’m just guessing now—for their immune system to grab hold and eliminate the viruses, the people would survive. [According to the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization, 250 facilities in the United States that perform ECMO are on the global registry, but many unregistered centers in the country do have the equipment and occasionally perform it.]

...

Q: Could the United States lockdown Washington, D.C., for this virus?

I Just Got Back From Coronavirus Hot Zone, and No One at JFK Seemed to Notice
I breezed right through security, faster than any other time I can remember.
by Julia Lindau
Mar 6 2020

NEW YORK — When I arrived at New York’s JFK Airport on Thursday after spending a few days outside a coronavirus hot zone in Italy, I was expecting a shakedown: a temperature check at customs and some questions about where exactly in the region I’d been and if I had come into contact with any sick people during my stay.

Instead, I breezed right through security, faster than any other time I can remember.

The lack of precautions was jarring considering where I’d just been. I had been on a reporting trip to the Lombardy region of Italy, the epicenter of that country's coronavirus outbreak. According to the Italian government, of the 4,636 people in the country who’ve contracted the virus, around half got it in Lombardy. And while I didn't go inside the exclusion zone, or in any way come in contact with anyone exposed, the mere fact that I'd been to Lombardy should have raised a red flag.

No kidding, the article mentions yoga, some yoga is in a hot studio so you do sweat more.  That can have it's drawbacks.

Quote
Gyms and Coronavirus: What Are the Risks?
Sweat cannot transmit the virus but high-contact surfaces, such as barbells, can pose a problem, a doctor said.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/08/health/coronavirus-gyms-safety.html

Gyms, health clubs are good places. I think they are worse in the winter for picking up germs. The article doesn't even mention steam rooms. Or even saunas. I haven't been lately. We will see if this straightens itself out.

The media announced this last night. People will be going crazy at the stores today.

Well, I am not scared but concerned.  Two people in the county that I reside in have tested positive for the corona; one has died, the other has been hospitalized -- so the death toll in my country right now is 50%.  Two counties north of here, have 3 confirmed cases and several quarantined.

The flu has hit this area hard and now with this additional virus in my county, I am not going out unless absolutely necessary. We prepped a long time ago with food and paper goods, I went out when cases of coronavirus were reported in the U.S and bought extra Clorox wipes, Clorox and hand sanitizer.

Unfortunately, we had out of town guests this weekend and previous weekend from several different parts of the country -- I washed the counters down, sanitized and cleaned the bathroom and sanitized all the door knobs when they left. Two family members from different states were coughing, congested and had a runny nose.  They claimed it was allergies.  Really?  Thanks. That's all we need.  Both hubby and I aren't in the best health.

Hello people -- if you are sick, under the weather, not feeling well, allergies or not (how do you actually know?), PLEASE. PLEASE stay home and don't risk infecting the rest of us!!!

16M people under quarantine is a big deal -- I hope that they extend the duration of the quarantine to be on the safe side to 24 days instead of the usual 14.  People have become symptomatic beyond the 14 day period.

True.  I would strongly encourage everyone to at minimum get a two week supply of food -- the time is NOW.  Unfortunately the risk has already increased, the best time would have been to get prepared when the virus first started infecting people outside of China and the 1st U.S. case was reported.

This virus is now in my area.   **nononono*  278 people in FL are currently being monitored.  Looks like Florida even with their very warm temperatures seems to have the potential right now for significantly more cases than the rest of the U.S.

Florida announces 2 coronavirus deaths, 7 new cases in 24 hours

......As of 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Florida authorities said eight people in the state have tested positive for COVID-19 -- seven are Florida residents and the eighth is a non-resident. Earlier in the week Gov. Ron Desantis said five Florida residents who had been traveling in China have also been quarantined outside the state after testing positive for the virus.

Florida residents currently in the state have tested positive for COVID-19, according to the Health Department, with 88 tests still pending. Another 278 people in the state are being monitored for the virus.................

IMHO, this should be a no brainer right now.

State Department: Amid coronavirus risk, Americans 'should not travel by cruise ship'

The State Department is warning all Americans, and not just the sick, to avoid getting on cruise ships in the wake of the coronavirus risk.

The department wrote in a tweet: "U.S. citizens, especially with underlying conditions, should not travel by cruise ship. #CDC notes increased risk of #COVID19 on cruises. Many countries have implemented screening procedures, denied port entry rights to ships and prevented disembarking."

As coronavirus concerns have sparked various problems among cruise ships, one company has been offering incentives for travelers to continue taking their voyages.......

I spent thirty years preparing for a crisis with water, dry food, etc. Last dec we moved to a new town and have been renting a tiny cottage pending finding a new home. No supplies now.

Obviously this is personal.

Gov. Beshear said Monday only one of the four patients had recently traveled. Which means the virus is community spread

We're told the two Harrison County patients are connected and one of them worked at the Cynthiana Walmart.

Beshear says health officials are also monitoring six other employees from that Walmart, but none of them have shown symptoms.

Those six people are self-isolating.

The Texas senator said he would stay home for 14 days after interacting with the infected person at the recent CPAC conference in Maryland.

If I understood his statement corrector, he was exposed 10 days ago and will self-quarantine for the remaining 4.

a lot of our area schools have spring break this week, which may help slow down the spread somewhat.

Maybe he is using the supposed worst case 24 day criteria.

OTOH, is there mass close-ness going on in Galveston, and South Padre?

Given the actual symptoms of this disease, shouldn't people be stocking up on cough drops, rather than toilet paper?

Nations are closing borders, stocks are plummeting and a New York Times headline reads: “The Coronavirus Has Put the World’s Economy in Survival Mode.” Both political parties have realized the crisis could severely impact the November elections — House, Senate, presidency. And sacré bleu, they’ve even shuttered the Louvre!

Some of these reactions are understandable, much of it pure hysteria. Meanwhile, the spread of the virus continues to slow. ...

Like the flu, the coronavirus is afflicting high-risk groups: the elderly, those with underlying health conditions like diabetes or heart disease and those with compromised immune systems. Are there exceptions? Sure. But that’s the case with almost every complex biological phenomenon of the kind.

More good news. This month, the Northern Hemisphere, which includes the countries with the most cases, starts heating up. Almost all respiratory viruses hate warm and moist weather.  ...

Toilet paper is for being quarantined in your home.

Well, I reside in SWFL and it is hot and humid.  Our temps have already been in the '80's for a couple of days in the past couple of weeks and though cases of the flu virus have decreased, corona is slowly creeping in, with 278 possible cases.  Entrances to the ER have been slowed in order to question whether or not a person could potentially have the virus -- one hospital just north of here has called in a Hazmat unit.  We have two cases in my county, one died and 70 medical personnel being evaluated.

Also, a university just south of me brought back students and faculty early from Italy -- they are under self quarantine.  Where are they going to go?  Back to their home states?  The dorms?  This is absurd.  They should have never let them go in the first place.  Of course, the liberal logic took over.

So -- not so sure about the moist warm temperatures killing this virus.  I am doubtful.

https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/international-travel/before-you-go/travelers-with-special-considerations/cruise-ship-passengers.html

U.S. citizens, particularly travelers with underlying health conditions, should not travel by cruise ship.  CDC notes increased risk of infection of COVID-19 in a cruise ship environment. In order to curb the spread of COVID-19, many countries have implemented strict screening procedures that have denied port entry rights to ships and prevented passengers from disembarking.  In some cases, local authorities have permitted disembarkation but subjected passengers to local quarantine procedures.  While the U.S. government has evacuated some cruise ship passengers in recent weeks, repatriation flights should not be relied upon as an option for U.S. citizens under the potential risk of quarantine by local authorities.

This is a fluid situation.  CDC notes that older adults and travelers with underlying health issues should avoid situations that put them at increased risk for more severe disease.  This entails avoiding crowded places, avoiding non-essential travel such as long plane trips, and especially avoiding embarking on cruise ships.  Passengers with plans to travel by cruise ship should contact their cruise line companies directly for further information and continue to monitor the Travel.state.gov website and see the latest information from the CDC: https://www.cdc.gov/quarantine/cruise/index.html.

Six inmates have died after riots broke out at 27 prisons in Italy over new restrictions aimed at controlling the spread of coronavirus, local media say.

In Milan, prisoners set fire to part of the San Vittore prison before protesting on the roof after they were told that visits had been suspended.

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said the coronavirus outbreak was Italy's "darkest hour".

Coronavirus: Are women and children less affected?

Women seem to be less likely to die from coronavirus than men, and children appear to be less likely to die than other age groups.

Most people will get a mild infection, but the pattern is clear in the most severe cases. So what is going on?

Are there any risks in pregnancy?

Officially the answer is no, but experts have raised doubts.

True.  I would strongly encourage everyone to at minimum get a two week supply of food -- the time is NOW.  Unfortunately the risk has already increased, the best time would have been to get prepared when the virus first started infecting people outside of China and the 1st U.S. case was reported.

I posted this on February 24th over on FR and maybe you might find it a helpful resource:

The Coronavirus is here and the first thing to do is to take reasonable precautions to prevent infection starting with the simple step of declining to shake hands with everyone. Just say NO!!

But at home you do need to be reasonably ready for the possibility that you may be quarantined yourself or that your city/town might be isolated for as much as eight weeks.

FEMA has a great list to start with and you can find it here:

https://www.fema.gov/media-library-data/1390846764394-dc08e309debe561d866b05ac84daf1ee/checklist_2014.pdf

The LDS also have a useful list of things to store up on and it's a good list to check as you go about your preparedness.

https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/ensign/2006/03/random-sampler/food-storage-for-one-year?lang=eng

My own advice and how my family has already prepared is simple: Buy what you need for up to eight weeks of isolation but only buy those non-perishable foods, toiletries, and etc, that you were going to use anyway.

Don't go buying a 50 pound bag of rice if you don't eat rice. Ditto with beans or other such dry goods.

Only buy what you were going to use anyway but just get enough to last you up to eight weeks.

Then after this thing blows over you can just use up the extra supplies until they get down to your normal level of such things.

Oh, and I assume you're ALWAYS buying ammunition so I'm just taking that one for granted!

I saw an interview on FBN this morning with Matt Sclapp who's "quarantined," and he Skyped it in.  This won't stop any of them from making TeeBee appearances.
