Westchester County Man Tests Positive for Coronavirus in NY’s 1st Possible Community Spread Case: Gov. Cuomo

A man who lives in Westchester County and works in Manhattan is New York state's second confirmed coronavirus case -- and the first apparent community spread case -- in the tri-state area, the governor said Tuesday.

Gov. Cuomo said an initial review of the man's travels doesn't suggest any travel to China or other countries at the nexus of the outbreak so authorities are looking at it as a possible case of person-to-person spread. Two families in Buffalo are also being tested.

The news comes as the city awaits test results for the husband of a New York City woman who tested positive for the novel coronavirus after her return from Iran. He is expected to also have contracted the infection, local and state authorities said at a separate news briefing Monday.

No further details on the Westchester man or his condition were immediately available. It's only the second confirmed case that the tri-state has seen -- and the country's fifth apparent case of person-to-person spread -- since the outbreak that has now killed a half dozen people in the United States and thousands worldwide.

Under the defintion of pandemic this is a pandemic. I read that it can survive on surfaces for up to nine days. Now that it is here it will always be around. Whether it becomes a recurring seasonal bug, who nows? If it isn't mutating how is it it can reinfect a person?

If it isn't such a big deal how much of China is still under quarantine?

If it wasn't bio lab created, then how did it spread so rapidly in China?

Iran Releases Prisoners on a Temporary Basis to Halt the Spread of the Coronavirus
Prisoners who test negative will be allowed out as Tehran steps up its campaign to combat one of the worst outbreaks of the illness
Aresu bali and   Isabel Coles
March 3, 2020 9:02 am ET

TEHRAN—Iran is temporarily releasing tens of thousands of prisoners in an attempt to prevent the spread of the coronavirus in the country’s crowded prisons, as it struggles to contain one of the worst outbreaks of a disease that has already killed dozens of people and infected 23 lawmakers.

More than 54,000 prisoners have gone out on furlough after testing negative for the virus, judiciary spokesman Gholamhossein Esmaili said Tuesday. He indicated that several prominent Iranian political prisoners and British dual national Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe would be allowed out.

Iran has ramped up efforts to contain the virus in recent days after accusations it was seeking to hide the extent of the outbreak.

I left my home in Wuhan for a weeklong beach vacation with my son and husband. Now we can't get back in — and we're giving up on trying.
Imani Bashir

Imani Bashir is a writer who was living in Wuhan, China, with her husband and their 3-year-old son.

They left for a one-week beach vacation in Malaysia in mid-January to celebrate Lunar New Year. But on January 23, Wuhan was officially locked down — and they couldn't go back.

The family spent a month in Malaysia, shuffling between hotel rooms and trying to figure out their next move.

Rather than wait to find out when they'd be able to return to China, the family asked their landlady to give away their belongings. Bashir's husband has since taken a new job in another country.

"Our attitude has been 'damn the stuff — we're healthy and together,'" she writes.

If it wasn't bio lab created, then how did it spread so rapidly in China?

It didn't spread so rapidly.

Timeline of the 2019–20 coronavirus outbreak in December 2019 – January 2020

WUFLU

1 December 2019

The first known patient started experiencing symptoms on 1 December 2019. He had not been to the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market of Wuhan. No epidemiological link could be found between this case and later cases.[8][9][10]

8–18 December 2019

Between 8 and 18 December 2019, seven cases later diagnosed with Wuhan coronavirus were documented, two of them were linked with the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market, five were not.[11]

12 December 2019

Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported in a broadcast airing on 12 January 2020 that a "new viral outbreak was first detected in the city of Wuhan, China, on 12 December 2019."[12]

21 December 2019

Chinese epidemiologists with the Chinese Center for Disease Control (CDC) published an article on 1 January 2020 stating that the first cluster of patients with "pneumonia of an unknown cause" had been identified on 21 December 2019.[13]

24 December 2019

First publicly reported collection of virus sample from patient for genetic sequencing.[14][15][16]

Singapore's Ministry of Health (MOH) reported that the first case of what would later be named the 2019-nCoV (Wuhan coronavirus) had been diagnosed. It was later confirmed to not actually be related to the outbreak.[17]

25 December 2019

Report of medical staffs in two hospitals in Wuhan suspected to be infected and was being isolated around December 25.[18]

29 December 2019

According to a CDC publication on 31 January 2020, the facts leading up to the identification of the 2019-nCoV were as follows, "On 29 December 2019, a hospital in Wuhan admitted four individuals with pneumonia and recognized that all four had worked in the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market, which sells live poultry, aquatic products, and several kinds of wild animals to the public. The hospital reported this occurrence to the local center for disease control (CDC), which lead Wuhan CDC staff to initiate a field investigation with a retrospective search for pneumonia patients potentially linked to the market. The investigators found additional patients linked to the market, and on 30 December, health authorities from Hubei Province reported this cluster to China CDC. The following day, China CDC sent experts to Wuhan to support the investigation and control effort. Samples from these patients were obtained for laboratory analyses."[19]

WHO says coronavirus death rate is 3.4% globally, higher than previously thought.

Lots of good info at the link. I 'like' this one.

New Cases in China outside Hubei

Due to discrepancies in the data reported by Hubei Province and China's NHC in the last two days, we are currently validating the Feb. 22 - Feb. 24 data. We will publish the graph again as soon as the data is reconciled.

This is the first article that I have read that states coronaviruses can live on surfaces for up to 9 days.  So this particular strain may live that long or longer.  That is concerning.

Surfaces? Sneezes? Sex? How the Coronavirus Can and Cannot Spread

A delicate but highly contagious virus, roughly one-900th the width of a human hair, is spreading from person to person around the world. The coronavirus, as it’s known, has already infected people in at least 60 countries.

Because this virus is so new, experts’ understanding of how it spreads is limited. They can, however, offer some guidance about how it does — and does not — seem to be transmitted..........

...........Technically, the virus widely known as the coronavirus is just the latest of many similarly shaped viruses. (Coronaviruses are named for the spikes that protrude from their surfaces, which resemble a crown or the sun’s corona.) A study of other coronaviruses found they remained on metal, glass and plastic for two hours to nine days.

Whether a surface looks dirty or clean is irrelevant. If an infected person sneezed and a droplet landed on a surface, a person who then touches that surface could pick it up. How much is required to infect a person is unclear...........

.............Kissing could definitely spread it, several experts said. Though coronaviruses are not typically sexually transmitted, it’s too soon to know, the WHO said.............

Iran reports 2,336 cases of the new coronavirus, at least 77 dead; MPs hit hard

Iran on Tuesday announced new measures to slow the spread of the new coronavirus and reported that the country has seen 2,336 cases and 77 deaths since the outbreak.

An Iranian lawmaker reportedly has told colleagues to stop their contact with public as there are 23 cases of the new coronavirus among parliament members.

That's according to lawmaker Abdolreza Mesri, who was quoted by Iranian state television's Young Journalists Club program.

I'm having a hard time being sympathetic. Are the Iranians currently blaming Trump or Israel?

SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea reported 516 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday as thousands of sick people waited for hospital beds in Daegu, the city at the center of the worst outbreak outside mainland China.

The new cases bring South Korea’s total to 5,328, with at least 32 deaths, mostly in and around Daegu where the flu-like virus has spread rapidly through members of a fringe Christian group.

Coronavirus panic: Why are people stockpiling toilet paper?
By Frances Mao BBC News, Sydney

Perhaps the worst doomsday scenario is this: being stuck on the toilet and finding you're down to the last square.

At least that appears to be the nightmare prospect scaring many Australians right now, who have become the latest group to respond to coronavirus fears by buying toilet paper en masse.

This is despite authorities stressing there is no shortage - given most of the nation's rolls are made locally.

Read more at:  https://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-51731422

I actually heard that this was happening at a local Sam's, people were buying up a lot of household goods, specifically toilet paper and other items.

Marco Rubio: Russia, China and Iran are waging disinformation war over coronavirus
By Marco Rubio
March 3, 2020 | 2:48pm | Updated

Malign actors in Beijing, Moscow, Tehran and elsewhere are exploiting the coronavirus pandemic to sow chaos through conspiracy theories — most heinously, the notion that the United States created the disease. This should come as no surprise, as the ruling regimes in these countries want to deflect from their abject failures and rarely miss an opportunity to blame America.

The slanders are outrageous. But such disinformation also risks fatal consequences to the populations that receive it. To combat disinformation, we must identify the sources of deception campaigns, educate the global community and equip foreign governments to combat it.

Beijing’s official outlets, for example, have accused the United States of over-hyping the pandemic for cynical purposes, with a foreign ministry spokeswoman declaring that Washington had “taken the lead in imposing excessive restrictions.” American actions, she said, “could only create and spread fear.”

#coronavirus outbreak on #DiamondPrincess provides valuable guidance on why we should prioritize resources for elderly.

Of the 705 people infected:

-400 had no symptoms

-7 who died were all over 70

-30 to 40 elderly still in ICU

-Most of the rest felt terrible but recovered

Just this little factoid tells you a lot... facts are facts. I even heard them discuss it on the radio yesterday, it does seem to target the elderly and perhaps, if children don't have a strong immune system, them too but affecting 705 people probably means, it is at least, going around to everyone.

Head of Iran’s emergency medical services tests positive for coronavirus
https://nypost.com/2020/03/03/head-of-irans-emergency-medical-services-tests-positive-for-coronavirus/

Iran’s head of emergency medical services has tested positive for the coronavirus as an outbreak grips the nation, according to a report.

Pirhossein Kolivand is receiving treatment for the deadly virus that has infected more than 2,300 people in the country, the Independent reported, citing the semi-official ILNA news agency.

His “health is good and there is no need for concern,” his office said in a statement.

Kolivand is among at least two dozen of the country’s leaders who are sick from the virus, including 23 members of parliament....

Aside from age, and it may simply be a matter of available health care, it seems like some populations are being hit harder (higher mortality rate) than others. While that veery easily could be an artifact of reporting and statistics for those groups, I wonder if the virus targets some genetic traits in those populations that amplifies the overall effects and mortality.

There is a host of variables which could account for that including:
Religious practices

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. Statistic the dumpster fire dims won't cover for this crisis.

Deaths this Flu Season- 8000 - 9000
Deaths from Coronovirs (on 3rd cycle now)- 9

This should also be of interest to many....   (More precautions needed focusing on the elderly)

Yeah, let me look a little further.  I still think this probably isn't that far off, once you review the epidemiological comparisons to similar viral outbreaks.

(update) Not enough data yet, I guess.  I know we can't trust the Chicoms, but my experience shows that graph to be in line with other viral infections.  We should get a better idea after one more cycle.

Italy to close all schools and universities for two weeks as coronavirus death toll rises
https://www.cnbc.com/2020/03/04/italys-death-toll-from-the-coronavirus-is-now-worse-than-iran.html

Italy’s government will announce it will temporarily close the nation’s schools and universities due to the coronavirus outbreak, according to local media and a Reuters source, with the country’s education minister saying a final decision has not yet been made.

State-run RAI radio and the ANSA and LaPresse news agencies reported that Italian Premier Giuseppe Conte had agreed on the closure during a Cabinet meeting. But Education Minister Lucia Azzolina told reporters that nothing is final yet and a decision will be made in the next few hours.

The closure would be in effect from Thursday and will last until mid-March, and comes as authorities struggle to contain the spread of the coronavirus....

The Official Coronavirus Numbers Are Wrong, and Everyone Knows It
https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2020/03/how-many-americans-really-have-coronavirus/607348/
MARCH 3, 2020

We know, irrefutably, one thing about the coronavirus in the United States: The number of cases reported in every chart and table is far too low.

The data are untrustworthy because the processes we used to get them were flawed. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s testing procedures missed the bulk of the cases. They focused exclusively on travelers, rather than testing more broadly, because that seemed like the best way to catch cases entering the country.

Just days ago, it was not clear that the virus had spread solely from domestic contact at all. But then cases began popping up with no known international connection. What public-health experts call “community spread” had arrived in the United States. The virus would not be stopped by tight borders, because it was already propagating domestically. Trevor Bedford’s lab at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, which studies viral evolution, concluded there is “firm evidence” that, at least in Washington State, the coronavirus had been spreading undetected for weeks. Now different projections estimate that 20 to 1,500 people have already been infected in the greater Seattle area. In California, too, the disease appears to be spreading, although the limited testing means that no one is quite sure how far.

In total, fewer than 500 people have been tested across the country (although the CDC has stopped reporting that number in its summary of the outbreak). As a result, the current “official” case count inside the United States stood at 43 as of this morning (excluding cruise-ship cases). This number is wrong, yet it’s still constantly printed and quoted. In other contexts, we’d call this what it is: a subtle form of misinformation....

Many many cases are and will be asymptomatic.  Those numbers never get counted.  Some of the preliminary numbers, yes preliminary, are indicating the target mortality demographic (like flu) of this disease is the elderly.  I hope Pence adjusts his task force contingency plans to address this.

WHO Announces Global Death Rate For Coronavirus Is Now 3.4%

The WHO says the coronavirus is killing people at a rate much higher than the flu

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus, has already killed about 3.4 percent of confirmed cases around the world. This figure is not only higher than previous estimates, but it’s more than twice that of the death rate for the flu.

The fatality rate for the seasonal flu is less than one percent, comparatively. The global spread of COVID-19 can be controlled, according to the Director-General of the WHO Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. He’s urging all countries to step up their containment efforts and measures to protect those in the medical field who are dealing with confirmed and potential cases on the front lines.

Updates coming in that the death toll up to 10.  Again, primarily the elderly, and those pre-existing conditions.

If trend continues that the impact to young  and healthy is minimal, I hope task forece repositions its contingency plans to especially protect the elderly.   i.e Nursing Homes, hospitals, Assisted Living, etc. Still skeptical of mortality rate, because there is some anecdotal evidence out there that COVID-19 may have more instances of asymptomaic cases than normal seasonal flu.  Still to early to say definitively one way or the other.

CDC medical screener at LAX airport tests positive for coronavirus
https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/medical-screener-lax-airport-tests-positive-coronavirus-n1149986

A medical professional who conducted passenger screenings at Los Angeles International airport tested positive for the coronavirus late Tuesday night, according to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security and an internal email obtained by NBC News.

The person last worked screening air travelers for illness on Feb. 21, said the DHS statement, which also said the medical professional had worn the proper protective gear while working. The internal email described the medical professional as a "CDC {Centers for Disease Control and Prevention} contract medical screener."

The email also said "these [contract] screeners are predominantly assigned to the CDC in-transit lounge and a few support jetway screening on direct flights from China."

In its public statement, the DHS said, "Late last night, DHS headquarters was alerted to a situation where one of our contracted medical professionals conducting screenings at LAX international airport had tested positive for COVID-19, also known as the coronavirus. This individual is currently under self-quarantine at home with mild symptoms and under medical supervision. Their immediate family is also under home quarantine."...

Why Taiwan Has Just 42 Coronavirus Cases while Neighbors Report Hundreds or Thousands
By Ralph Jennings
March 04, 2020 03:59 AM

TAIPEI, TAIWAN - Taiwan sits near Japan, China and South Korea, three countries with some of the world’s worst outbreaks of the deadly coronavirus, but the island itself has just 42 isolated cases.

Chalk it up to extra early, effective preparedness, analysts and policymakers say – so effective that people’s approval of the government unexpectedly soared last month.

Taiwanese health officials saw the virus taking shape in the central Chinese Wuhan in December and began checking passengers who flew in from there. They also cut off flights from much of China, the outbreak origin, before a lot of peers around Asia did.

Now almost every public building in Taipei offers hand sanitizer and a lot of them, such as schools, require that anyone entering submit to a fever check....

Read more at: https://www.voanews.com/science-health/coronavirus-outbreak/why-taiwan-has-just-42-coronavirus-cases-while-neighbors-report

So, maybe some hope, hand sanitizer, yes, I've gotten a few bottles of that recently.

Coronavirus Patient: Screw Your Quarantine, Pal

Quote
New Hampshire’s first confirmed coronavirus patient was discovered recently and as has been happening in many places around the country, the hospital worker was told to stay home and remain isolated for 14 days. Seems like a solid plan, right? Perhaps not so much. We’ve now learned that there was some sort of “invitation only” event on Friday that the patient really wanted to attend. So they did. Without telling anyone.

Now the original patient is supposedly back home and in self-quarantine, but so are all of the event attendees who came in “close contact” with them. How many people each of them came in close contact with before being quarantined remains unknown.

Somebody should be occupying their time in quarantine by filling out an unemployment insurance claim, IMO! This wasn't a barista at a drive-up espresso kiosk, it was a hospital worker who should know better!

Right. This virus seems to put people over 60 in a higher risk category. Here is some perspective.

241 million

A country is in an aging population, which means it occupies 10 percent or 7 percent of the total population aged over 60 or 65 respectively. In 2017, in China, the proportion of Chinese citizens above 60 years old obtained 17.3 percent, approximately above 241 million.
