WS Game Three: Astros v. Nationals, Live Thread
« on: October 25, 2019, 07:57:45 pm »
The park jammed full half an hour before game time.

The Nats really laid it on pre-game---both sides had the red carpet laid out for them from their dugouts to come out and line up on the foul line for the pre-game ceremony.

And a singer rather appropriately named D.C. Washington sang "The Star Spangled Banner."

We're about to get underway . . . Anibal Sanchez pitching for the Nats; Zack Greinke pitching for the Astros.

Tough-to-field infield single by George Springer . . . a twisting running catch against the center field fence by Victor Robles robs Jose Altuve of at least a double . . . Michael Brantley flies to right . . . Springer steals second while Alex Bregman strikes out for the side.

No score, middle of the first.

Trea Turner sends Michael Brantley to the track with a leadoff drive and Brantley catches . . . Anthony Rendon slashes a two-out double down the left field line into the corner . . . but Greinke gets birthday boy Juan Soto to ground out to first. Each side with a first-inning runner; neither side cashes him in.

No score after one full.

Carlos Correa hits a one-out double down the LF line . . . Josh Reddick hits a bloop single to send him home . . . that's all the Astros get but they also get the first run.

1-0 Astros, middle second . . .

Feeling badly for Matt Adams, who imho, was an integral part of the post 19-31 run to the Wildcard.

Realize that Zimmerman is better defensively, but GAWD...can he square them up!

Back-to-back inning opening singles for the Nats turn into a strikeout and an Area Code 5-4-3.

1-0 Astros after two full . . .

Jose Altuve leads off with a double down the left field line, takes third on a fielding error where Soto had trouble with the ball under the edges of the wall pads . . .Brantley singles Altuve home on a weird-hop infield single off the mound . . . but that's all the scoring in the inning.

But the Astros lead, 2-0, middle of the third . . .

Greinke survives a bases-loaded jam with a nasty breaker to strike out Asdrubal Cabrera.

And it's still 2-0, Astros after three full . . .

Dammit!  Meanwhile, Greinke's pitch count is close to 65.

So...Cabrera was in the lineup tonight because his career BA vs. Greinke is .472.

Of course it's too small a sample size, but that last AB it looked more like .172.

Give Greinke his due---that breaking ball was so nasty even Mickey Mantle couldn't have hit it.  wink777

LOL!   I saw the Super Slo-Mo...to see if Estrubal closed his eyes or something.   Nope!  Pure defensive wave at trying to reach it to foul it off.

NOW....we're cooking with gas!

Robles hits a triple into the LF corner and scores Ryan Zimmerman, who drew a walk in a great AB.

2-1  STROS... with 1 out.    Greinke is at 77 pitches.

Is it me or is plate ump Gary Cederstrom blowing strike calls against both Greinke and Sanchez a little too liberally tonight?

Meanwhile, Altuve has a double and Brantley singles him home, 3-1 Astros . . .

Great scoop by Zimmerman on Turner's short-hop leaping throw for the side.

But 3-1 Astros, middle fifth . . .

Greinke is gone....and I was just running here to suggest Matt Adams pinch-hitting for Zimmerman now with a reliever coming in.

James spins Zimmerman into the dirt, then finally strikes him out swinging.

The Nats are 0-for-8 with men on second or better tonight.

3-1, Astros, after five full.

Grandpa dodges the howitzer . . . they get Tucker in a rundown toward the plate, put Brantley on intentionally to pitch to Bregman, and Bregman chops into an inning-ending forceout.

But it's 4-1, Astros, middle of the sixth . . .

Nats pitcher Joe Ross takes a hot grounder off his foot from George Springer for a two-out infield hit . . . then gets Jose Altuve to shoot one right through him for an inning-ending ground out.

But it's still 4-1 Astros, mid-eighth . . .

A jam shot bloop base hit to left center comes to nothing. The Nats go 0-for-10 with men on second or better for the first time in a Series since the '08 Phillies (and they went on to win that Series) . . .

The Astros take it, 4-1, ensuring at least a Game Five with Gerrit Cole back on the mound. Big props to the Astro pen for picking up where Zack Greinke left off.

The Nats still lead the Series, 2-1. We'll see you tomorrow evening.

Bravo to the Astros.  One thing I don't like is a 4-game sweep.  So boring to watch one team completely dominate.  This win makes the series far more interesting.

Bravo to the Astros.  One thing I don't like is a 4-game sweep.  So boring to watch one team completely dominate.  This win makes the series far more interesting.

@Applewood I understand the ratings aren’t that good this year

@EasyAce who are you predicting to win this years series?
@Gefn
The only thing I was willing to predict going in, and I'm still of that mind, was that it wouldn't be a short Series. Other than that, I learned a long time ago that the only thing about baseball that's predictable, especially postseason baseball, is how unpredictable it really is. Sorry to disappoint you, but I'm a writer and analyst, not a clairvoyant.
