IIRC, he took office in the early 70s, the start of an unbroken string of Dem Mayors of Baltimore.
Actually, parts of Baltimore were pretty decent in the early to mid 70s, especially with the Inner Harbor refit for the bicentennial. It was later that the place really started going downhill.

Little Feat Guitarist Paul Barrere Dead at 71

Quote
Little Feat's Paul Barrere, who served as guitarist and vocalist in the boogie rock band for nearly 50 years, died Saturday at the age of 71.

The band confirmed Barrere’s death in a statement. While no cause of death was provided, the guitarist was undergoing treatment in his long battle with liver disease; in 1994, Barrere contracted hepatitis C, and in 2015 was diagnosed with liver cancer.

“It is with great sorrow that Little Feat must announce the passing of our brother guitarist, Paul Barrere, this morning at UCLA Hospital,” Little Feat said in a statement.

Former Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) dies at 90

Conyers served western Detroit in the U.S. House of Representatives for 27 terms, a testament to the ignorance of his electorate who, despite consistent sympathy for Islamic terrorism and widespread corruption including his wife's bribery conviction, continued to elect him with over 80% of the vote. Conyers was ultimately forced out of office for his own sexual harassment in 2017. As a further testament to the district's far-left nature, Conyers's former seat is currently held by Rashida Tlaib, a member of "The Squad."

No surprise there. He really and truly was a representative "ob hiz peep-pulls". They kept re-electing him BECAUSE of his obvious corruption. He was cheating whitey out of money,and they greatly admired him for doing it.

@EasyAce

Amen,brother,amen! GREAT recording group,but they partied so hard they sucked in concert. I saw them twice and had trouble even recognizing their songs both times,and had tickets to see them again the week Lowell George died.

But when he was semi-sober,he created nothing but musical magic that brought smiles to the faces of everyone that heard it,as well as movement to their limbs. Even  people that KNEW they couldn't dance,just couldn't hold back.

Even though I am a HUGE fan of their "boogie music",my favorite song of theirs was "Roll 'em Easy". One of my favorite songs,period.

Didn't one of the drummers get life for murder back in the 70's?

@sneakypete
No. Richie Hayward, Little Feat's co-founding drummer, died of cancer in 2010; his replacement, Gabe Ford, is still with the current lineup. Keyboardsman Bill Payne is, I think, the only Little Feat member to be with the band since their beginning.

You may be thinking of Jim Gordon, drummer with Delaney & Bonnie & Friends and Derek & the Dominos, who spun into mental illness and killed his mother in 1983. Gordon was diagnosed with schizophrenia but also serves a life sentence for murder thanks to California's Insanity Defense Reform Act. Gordon has been denied parole several times since. Gordon was also an active studio musician (among others, he played on George Harrison's All Things Must Pass), but he never played with Little Feat.

Robert Evans, ‘Chinatown’ Producer and Paramount Chief, Dies at 89

Quote
Robert Evans, the Paramount executive who produced “Chinatown” and “Urban Cowboy,” and whose life became as melodramatic and jaw-dropping as any of his films, died on Saturday night. He was 89.

Even though Hollywood history is filled with colorful characters, few can match the tale of Evans, whose life would seem far-fetched if it were fiction. With his matinee-idol looks, but little acting talent, Evans was given starring roles in a few movies and then, with no studio experience, was handed the production reins at Paramount in the 1960s. When he left the exec ranks, his first film as a producer was the classic “Chinatown,” and he followed with other hits, like “Marathon Man” and “Urban Cowboy.” Eventually, his distinctive look and speaking style turned him into a cult figure, and he had the distinction of being the only film executive who starred in his own animated TV series.

No,I am horrible with names,but I do remember a LF band member going to prison for murder. I do remember he was a black guy,and I THINK he played the drums,harmonica,and some other wind instrument. Can't remember his name,but he was so good he actually stood out in solo runs,and with a band like LF,that ain't easy to do.

The closest any member of Little Feat ever got to behind bars was a longtime myth that the now-deceased Paul Berrere spent a little time in the hoosegow---but not for murder. The Feat (their name was suggested by Mothers of Invention drummer Jimmy Carl Black, who thought Lowell George's tiny hoofs compared to his large body looked amusing) have a black percussionist/vocalist, Sam Clayton (his sister is vocal legend Merry Clayton), who joined the band in 1972 (and is still with them) . . . and who, apparently, has never seen even the outside of a jail cell.

@Smokin Joe

He was a rank amateur comparted to JJ and Sharpie.  Sharpie was so slick he lived in a mansion for years,flew all around the world First Class,and never paid any taxes because the government could never prove he had any income.

I have no freaking idea how he got away with this,but he did.

...

A 1993 photograph of a diminutive, sexagenarian woman surveying the front lines of conflict has left an indelible mark on the international community as a true example of commitment to humanitarian aid.

The woman was Sadako Ogata, a scholar and mother of two, who in 1991 was appointed the first female United Nation High Commissioner for Refugees. It coincided with the end of the Cold War — just two years after Japan began the Heisei Era.

What awaited the chief of the U.N. refugee agency was an eruption of civil conflicts and ethnic cleansing unleashed by the disintegration of the Soviet Union.

Dodgers 3-Time World Series Champion Ron Fairly Passes Away
Ron Fairly had ordinary ability and became an extraordinary player. As a hitter he knew the strike zone, developed a good swing, and became a difficult out . . . he was willing to do whatever he had to do to become the best player he could.---John Roseboro, Dodgers catcher.

In later years Fairly became a much-loved Seattle Mariners broadcaster.

Bernard Slade, 'Partridge Family' Creator and 'Same Time, Next Year' Writer, Dies at 89

Bernard Slade, the Oscar-nominated writer who created The Partridge Family and wrote the enduring romantic comedy Same Time, Next Year for Broadway and the big screen, died Wednesday. He was 89.

Slade died peacefully at his Beverly Hills home from complications of Lewy body dementia, a family rep announced.

In the 1960s and '70s, Slade also developed ABC's The Flying Nun and created NBC's The Girl With Something Extra, two comedies starring Sally Field; created ABC's Love on a Rooftop, featuring Judy Carne, Pete Duel and Rich Little, and CBS' Bridget Loves Bernie, starring David Birney and Meredith Baxter; and served as a story editor and penned 17 episodes for ABC's Bewitched, starring Elizabeth Montgomery.

Both original versions of Same Time, Next Year starred Ellen Burstyn, who won a Tony in 1975 for her stage performance, then earned an Oscar nomination for best actress. She starred opposite Charles Grodin on Broadway and with Alan Alda in the 1978 feature. Slade's work netted him Tony and Oscar noms as well.

Lewy body dementia. It's what killed my father. There are things in the brain called Lewy bodies that get messed up. It's very much like Alzheimer's.

@mountaineer

Thanks! I had never heard of such a thing,and it still doesn't make any sense to me how a body can have dementia.

I hadn't heard of it either, @sneakypete

From https://www.nia.nih.gov/health/what-lewy-body-dementia#what

Quote
Lewy bodies are named for Dr. Friederich Lewy, a German neurologist. In 1912, he discovered abnormal protein deposits that disrupt the brain's normal functioning in people with Parkinson's disease. These abnormal deposits are now called "Lewy bodies."

Lewy bodies are made of a protein called alpha-synuclein. In the healthy brain, alpha-synuclein plays a number of important roles in neurons (nerve cells) in the brain, especially at synapses, where brain cells communicate with each other. In Lewy body dementia, alpha-synuclein forms into clumps inside neurons, starting in areas of the brain that control aspects of memory and movement. This process causes neurons to work less effectively and, eventually, to die.

So it isn't a body dementia, but the Lewy bodies which cause it.

Ok,it's NOT "bodies" as in "corpses",but "bodies" as in "elements". That makes a lot more sense.

I don't want to shock anyone but I am not a research scientist in real life,and I have never even played one on teebee,but to simple old me,this seems to ME to be a vehicle to take science forward to other discoveries,maybe even including a cure for insanity in all it's various forms.

Which,when you think of it,also opens a whole bleeping basket of snakes once you ask yourself in your best Rod Sterling voice "If science can use this technology to cure insanity,can't they also use it to CREATE insanity,and weaponize it?"

Please cue "The Twilight Zone" music.

Thank you,and sleep well tonight.

The answer, of course, is yes. All knowledge is a two edged sword, or the term "evil genius" wouldn't have been coined. Like power, it is something which can be benevolent, neutral, or malevolent, depending on who wields it.

I watched the first season of this show to see what it was about. Never watched another because it was depressing.

But I remember this guy...he was a tough old coot.

He retired from the Navy in 1990 after 45 years of continuous service.

The fact that he was allowed to continue to serve for 45 years is a VERY good sign of how highly the Navy thought of him. That is practically unheard of for enlisted men.

I don't watch enough TV to know who this fellow is or was, but here's another actor dying from drugs.

I have no idea who that guy was and never saw him in anything,but ain't 60 a little old to be overdosing? Most people have grown up a long time before that age.
