That was a performance on Solid Gold.  Solid Gold had a lot of bad lip synching.  Maybe this one is better?  From the David Letterman show in 1988:

Error 404 (Not Found)!!1

Much better! Now can you find one without Paul Shaffer making piano faces? :0012:

I just got a breaking news flash that Ric Ocasek died in New York tonight at the age of 75.

Really bummed. I loved and still love The Cars.

https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/Ric-Ocasek-Cars-Singer-Dead-in-NY-at-75-560430391.html

Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Ric Ocasek, lead singer of the rock band The Cars, died Sunday in New York at age 75.
Police said they received a call around 4 p.m. for an unconscious male at a townhouse on East 19th Street. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Law enforcement sources confirmed the deceased was Ocasek
Ocasek and his band were inducted into the Rock Hall in 2018. The institution described the band as "hook-savvy with the perfect combo of new wave and classic rock."
The band had 13 top-40 singles, and Ocasek went on to a successful producing career after The Cars broke up in the late 1980s.
He was also known for his long-running marriage to the Czech supermodel Paulina Porizkova. She announced their separation in 2018 after 28 years of marriage.
They listed the 19th Street residence for sale earlier this year for more than $15 million.

I'm very sorry to hear that.  Very tragic, I wouldn't have expected that. Prayers for Ric Ocasek.

Yes, I know a number of their songs, they have had a lot of radio play, so, that's two well known rockers dead in 3 days.

Heart disease killed Ric Ocasek, lead singer of The Cars, according to medical examiner

Quote
Ric Ocasek, lead singer of The Cars, died from cardiac arrest that was brought on by heart disease, authorities said Monday.

The Office of Chief Medical Examiner of the City of New York formally listed the rocker's cause of death as "hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease" with a contributing factor of emphysema, a disease regularly associated with smokers.

Immediately followed by 10 more seconds of every 17 year old boy's absolute worst nightmare. It was an eighties classic, as were the Cars.

What happened? I don't think I watched 3 movies from around 1965 to 1990 something,so I missed it.  Probably haven't seen more than a dozen since then, and all but two were streamed.

Didn't watch tv,either.

The Pheobe Cate's scene was imagined by Judge Rheinhold's character, and she walked in on him in the bathroom while he was, well, acting out.

Anyway, back to the obits thread.

@Applewood

Making it THROUGH the 70's was an accomplishment in itself for most of them.

I sure wish Janis had been one of the ones that made it. I can still get chills when I hear her voice on a recording.

@sneakypete

Yeah.  Janis.  Hendrix too -- amazing guitar player.  But so many of them died young because of irresponsibility and bad choices.  The ones who got clean (or stayed clean), took responsibility -- they survived.

What is sad is that these young artists today -- many of them haven't learned from the bad choices Janis and Hendrix made.  So many of them are dying young.  There was a local  rapper here named Mac Miller.  Was really making his mark.   Then last year he overdosed -- dead at 26.   Last week, there was a celebration to mark the anniversary of his death.  I guess the event was comforting to his family and friends, but the concept of celebration struck a wrong chord with me.  What was there to celebrate?  A guy who had it all (or it was coming his way) who blew it all by killing himself with drugs.  Is that something to celebrate?  What does this say to his young fans?  That  it's wonderful to make bad choices and end up dead way too young?

I mourn the death of Ric Ocasek -- and that of Eddie Money a few days before -- but I am grateful these guys have passed from natural causes after a full life, not from any irresponsible behavior of theirs at a young age.

Very sorry to har this, I read her wikipedia bio, she seemed to have gotten breast cancer in 2002:

wikipedia

For some reason, in my mind, I associate Cokie and George Will together, they must have been regulars on ABC's 'The Week":

You can imagine, it's   the leading story at NPR.

She'll certainly be missed.

I'm sure there will be a number of tributes that come out for her.

BTW, Daughter of Senator Boggs - (D) Louisiana.

A lot of history in all of this too.

Per Senator Bogg's wikipedia entry, on the plane he was in that went down:

Quote
Speculation, suspicions, and theories
The events surrounding Boggs's death have been the subject of much speculation, suspicion, and numerous conspiracy theories.[citation needed] The theories often center on his membership on the Warren Commission. Boggs dissented from the Warren Commission's majority who supported the single bullet theory. Regarding the single-bullet theory, Boggs commented, "I had strong doubts about it."[21] In the 1979 novel The Matarese Circle, author Robert Ludlum portrayed Boggs as having been killed to stop his investigation of the Kennedy assassination.

In case, one didn't know this.

Also, thanks to Mountaineer who certainly already provided some of this info.

Can't say I cared for Cokie much. She wasn't as screechy as journalists are now, but in her heyday she was as partisan and biased as it got, just slightly more polite.

I detested how she defended the Clinton admin week after week using the flimsiest spin and parsing, while trying to pretend she was a impartial jounalist.

Kim Kardashian lookalike believed leader of Sinaloa cartel's armed wing reportedly found dead
By Greg Norman | Fox News

A woman believed to have led the Sinaloa cartel’s armed wing under former leader Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman reportedly has been found dead in Mexico.

The body of Claudia Ochoa Felix, who gained notoriety in recent years for looking a lot like reality star Kim Kardashian and for posting provocative photos on the Internet – including one of her holding a gold-encrusted assault rifle – was located inside a home in Culiacan over the weekend, the La Prensa newspaper reported.

Local media reports claim multiple causes of death from drug overdose to asphyxiation. Authorities have only identified the body as Carmen Berenice "N" and have not released an official cause of death.

I didn't know she was involved in criminal activity as the article alleges, I had heard of her before and this Kardashian bit, I thought she was only a girlfriend.

Nina Totenberg, Linda Wertheimer and Cokie Roberts, photographed around 1979, were among the prominent female voices on NPR in its early years.

I'm impressed by how conservatively they are dressed, imho.

Nina Totenberg, there's another name from the past that is very familiar.

‘Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’ Actor Aron Eisenberg Dies at 50

“Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” actor Aron Eisenberg, who played Nog in the 1990s series, died Saturday. He was 50.

His character Nog, who appeared for all seven seasons, was a member of the alien race Ferengi, and joined Starfleet after a recommendation from Captain Sisko. Eisenberg returned for a guest spot on “Star Trek: Voyager” and appeared in the “Star Trek” fan film “Renegades.”

His widow Malissa Longo wrote on Facebook, “He was so driven to put the best he had into whatever work was put before him. He lived his life with such vigor and passion.”

Eisenberg, who was born with one kidney, had received two kidney transplants. The kidney trouble had stunted his growth, and he stood at 5 feet tall.

I saw Cokie Roberts at her sister Barbara Sigmund’s funeral years ago. Barbara Sigmund was a great mayor of Princeton. She seemed very nice.

Barron Hilton
Hilton Hotels chairman and Los Angeles/San Diego Chargers founding owner dies at 91

In 1966, after his older brother, Conrad Hilton Jr., proved to be a wild-partying alcoholic, Conrad Hilton Sr. named Barron Hilton his successor to the chain of hotels he founded. Barron had already proved himself a successful businessman outside the hotel chain, and in 1960, he was chosen as the founding owner of the American Football League's Los Angeles franchise, the Chargers. After a single year in Los Angeles, the Chargers moved to San Diego to avoid competition. The San Diego Chargers won the 1963 AFL championship, the only major professional sports title of any franchise from that city to date, before the Hilton Hotels chain insisted he give up the Chargers in order to take over the hotel chain.

Upon taking over Hilton Hotels, he maintained and built upon his father's success with the company, establishing the Las Vegas Hilton in 1969 and buying the Hotel Pennsylvania from its owners the Penn Central Railroad at a discount price.

He is the grandfather of socialites Nicky Rothschild and Paris Hilton.

Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter died but his songs will forever fill the air
Alex Biese, Asbury Park Press Published 6:19 p.m. ET Sept. 24, 2019

He's gone.

Robert Hunter, the longtime Grateful Dead lyricist, died Monday, Sept. 23 at the age of 78. He died at his home, though no cause of death has been announced.

Hunter's career creating landscapes of language for the iconic California jam band began with the grand journey of the soul "Dark Star" in 1967. His tenure with the Dead continued on through the likes of the elegiac "Days Between," one of the final collaborative masterpieces for Hunter and Dead guitarist and singer Jerry Garcia, introduced in 1993 just two years before Garcia's death.

Neil Genzlinger

Joseph C. Wilson, the long-serving American diplomat who undermined President George W. Bush’s claim in 2003 that Iraq had been attempting to to build nuclear weapons, leading to the unmasking of his wife, Valerie Plame, as a C.I.A. agent, died on Friday at his home in Santa Fe, N.M. He was 69.

Ms. Plame said the cause was organ failure.   ... More at MSN

Congress.  The seat she's running for is being vacated by a fellow who is running for the US Senate.  Her NM roots go back to when she moved to Santa Fe after Scooter Libby was convicted for "outing" somebody who was never in danger of being outed.

Now Joe can drink mint tea to his heart's content.

Since he is dead, here's what I have to say that is nice:

And that's about it.
I am not and never have been a leftist.

If, as anti-Covid-vaxxers claim, https://www.poynter.org/fact-checking/2021/robert-f-kennedy-jr-said-the-covid-19-vaccine-is-the-deadliest-vaccine-ever-made-thats-not-true/ , https://gospelnewsnetwork.org/2021/11/23/covid-shots-are-the-deadliest-vaccines-in-medical-history/ , The Vaccine is deadly, where in the US have Pfizer and Moderna hidden the millions of bodies of those who died of "vaccine injury"?

Millions now living should have died. Anti-Covid-Vaxxer ghouls hardest hit.

A good man went to prison because of him and his wife.  But I will leave Mr. Wilson's judgment up to the Lord.
