I have a hard time imagining not standing back up as the CO2 poison builds up first.

Anchor the ligature on one side of the door and flip it to the top.  Hang on the opposite side.  She probably had some substantial doors.

I wonder if it's as bad as having mom commit suicide when you are 13?

@Sanguine
Suicide is a tragic and selfish act.   However, in the grasp of severe depression people do not think rationally.  She needed help and did not get it.

That is the one element of the story that bugs me. At least make it look like a plausible accident of you are going to pull this shit. Hanging off a doorknob is a pretty big eff you.

You're right, and that's why the education/thinking needs to occur before it gets to that point.  She was in pain, but she will cause great, possibly greater pain to her daughter.

Depression can be quite awful

Absolutely.

But I lack the understanding of someone that has that level of physical control over their own body, that results in suicide.

People close to me suffer from severe depression.   It doesn't surprise me in the slightest.   I'm not talking the kind of depression resulting from your hockey team losing a game either.  For these people the pain of continuing is less then that rope.   I'm sure some people do stop just as some people who use a long rope probably change their mind after stepping off.

Kate Spade, American Designer, Dead at 55
By JONAH ENGEL BROMWICH and VANESSA FRIEDMAN

The American designer Kate Spade was found dead on Tuesday, according to police officials.

The police said that Ms. Spade, 55, was discovered unresponsive at a Park Avenue apartment, where she had hanged herself. She had left a note, but the official did not comment on what it said. She was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:26 a.m.

A housekeeper found Ms. Spade in her bedroom hanging from a red scarf tied to a doorknob, the police said. She was unconscious and the housekeeper called 911. Ms. Spade’s husband was at the scene. A police spokesman did not know the whereabouts of Ms. Spade’s daughter. Born Kate Brosnahan in Kansas City, Mo., in December 1962, Ms. Spade was one of the first of a powerful wave of female American contemporary designers in the 1990s.  ... More

Who said it was depression?

Most suicides are related to chronic pain, not depression. If she had a 13-year-old daughter, she had to have known that killing herself would've caused even more problems, which should have stopped her.

Either that, or some unsavory characters were about to catch up with her.
The New York Daily News story cited an unidentified source as saying she had "problems at home"; the paper also said she left a note for her daughter saying,
"It's not your fault."

Mostly anecdotes, especially among high-profile or famous people. Three off the top of my head that fit the chronic pain narrative are Dick Trickle, Hunter S. Thompson and Ray Combs. Then there was the case of Don Lapre who fits the "avoid those going after you" narrative (in Lapre's case, the feds, since he was being investigated for fraud).

Depression alone, from the cases I've seen, is generally pretty rare as an impetus for suicide, except in teenagers. Not that it doesn't happen (see: Sylvia Plath, Freddie Prinze Sr.) but that it isn't a leading cause and we shouldn't assume it as such.

Keith Emerson was probably both.  His hands were failing because of the multiple Carpal Tunnel surgeries, and fans were starting to tell him he'd lost it, and to stop playing.  He had both the pain and probably the depression from losing his gift.

Indeed, and both probably intertwine with each other.

In Mrs. Spade's case, however, we don't know much, and we may never know.

I see Kate Spade as Sylvia Plath. Very talented, intelligent and stupid. No man (or woman) is worth suiciding over. Especially if there are minor children.

I wish I could have spoken to her or counseled her. I would have saved her. I’ve saved other suicides. I know in my heart of hearts I could have saved her.

I’m going to use my kate Spade bag today. In her memory. One of the nicest birthday presents I ever received.

Adopt a puppy or kitty from your local shelter
Or an older dog or cat. They're true love❤️
