Ward Bond, wagonmaster, Robert Horton scout; I rode with them many nights. I miss  the programming from that era.

Same here.  I go back to The Cisco Kid and Lone Ranger.  Love the Western genre.

We have a cool thread in Entertainment...keyword, Tombstone and the Western Genre.

'Rockford Files' Actor Joe Santos Dead at 84

"Joe Santos, best known for playing The Rockford Files‘ Lt. Dennis Becker, died Friday. He was 84.

According to TMZ, which first reported the death, Santos suffered a heart attack on Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles. He was placed on life support, then died Friday morning in a hospital in Santa Monica.

In 1979, Santos was nominated for an Emmy for his portrayal of Rockford Files‘ Becker, a role he inhabited for six seasons and several subsequent TV movies."

I always enjoyed the interplay between him and Rockford (Garner) as absurd as it would be in the real world.

Loved the show and it seemed like Garner and Santo's had mutual respect for each other and it showed on screen.  Besides the theme song I loved the Cold Opening with Rockford's Answering machine message!  Those were a hoot!

Such a familiar face. He was in a zillion popular TV series from the 70's and 80's. Barnaby Jones, Baretta, Kung Fu, Lou Grant, Police Story, Blue Thunder, Black Sheep Squadron, Rockford, Hill Street Blues, A-Team, Remington Steele, TJ Hooker, Hardcastle, McGyver, Magnum PI, Miami Vice, Quantum Leap...the list goes on.

Former Toronto mayor Rob Ford dies of cancer at 46
Reuters
1 hour 6 minutes ago

TORONTO (Reuters) - Rob Ford, the former mayor of Toronto who gained global notoriety for admitting to smoking crack cocaine while in office, died from cancer on Tuesday, his office said in a statement.

The Toronto city councillor, 46, had been undergoing treatment for an aggressive form of cancer that had recurred despite surgery and several rounds of chemotherapy.

During his tumultuous 2010-2014 tenure as mayor of Canada's most populous city, Ford admitted to smoking crack cocaine, buying illegal drugs and driving after drinking alcohol.

He was diagnosed in September 2014 with pleomorphic liposarcoma, a rare and hard-to-treat cancer found in soft, fatty tissue of the body, after he was admitted to a hospital with abdominal pain.

The man who replaced Ford as mayor, John Tory, offered his condolences, calling Ford "a man who spoke his mind and who ran for office because of the deeply felt convictions that he had."

Former Mayor of Toronto Rob Ford dead at 46

Ford, a prominent fiscal conservative in a country known for its progressivism, was elected to the Toronto city council in 2000 and eventually was elected mayor in 2010. His exploits against unions and political correctness, many successful, were nonetheless overshadowed by his hard and fast lifestyle, which included obesity and frequent substance abuse, making him an international laughingstock. Ford was ousted from power in a 2013 coup by the city council and chose not to seek re-election when diagnosed with fat cancer (I'm not making this up), which ultimately killed him after chemotherapy was unsuccessful.

Joe Garagiola, Major League Baseball catcher turned emcee, dies at 90

Garagiola, seated next to Gerald Ford, watching election returns and realizing that Jimmy Carter was going to win the 1976 election.

Garagiola enjoyed a nine-year career as a journeyman catcher, playing for four teams, all in the National League, from 1946 to 1954. It was his post-baseball career as a broadcaster that earned him his greatest fame. He entered the broadcast booth in 1955 as a commentator, a role he would hold for various stations, teams and networks until his retirement in 2013, a span of 58 years. His gregarious personality made him popular outside of  baseball as well, and Garagiola would go on to host numerous game shows (most famously the 1970s version of To Tell the Truth) and serve on panels of numerous other TV shows, including NBC's Today.

No cause of death was stated.

A classic Garagiola exchange; well, he set himself up for a classic Vin Scully punch line, 1986 World Series, Game Seven. Mets batting, men on first and second, the Red Sox
putting the rotation (wheel) play on to foil a bunt, relief pitcher Jesse Orosco at bat:

Garagiola: I'd bet the house, he's gotta bunt!

Then, as the Red Sox put the wheel play on (first and third basemen charging the line, shortstop going to cover third, second baseman going to cover first, runners in motion):

Scully: Swinging! And a ground ball into left center field, in comes Knight, it is 8-5, Mets, and Joe, you just lost your house!

Garagiola's BFF growing up on The Hill, the Italian section of St. Louis was Yogi Berra. Their fathers worked in the same brickyard. Both
kids grew up worshipping the Cardinals. They both eventually tried out for the Cardinals, then run by Branch Rickey. The Cardinals signed
Garagiola with a $500 bonus (which meant the final payment on his parents' house) and didn't even look at Berra after the tryout.

Berra was heartbroken. He also said no when the rival (if that's the word for it) St. Louis Browns offered him a contract without a
bonus. The kid held out for a $500 bonus so he could prove to his skeptical parents there really was money in baseball. (Because of
his age, his father had to sign for him---and it took a lot of persuading including from the family priest to convince the old man to
let the kid play ball in the first place, after the old man had refused to let two of his older sons sign baseball contracts.)

Only later did both Berra and anyone else learn the real reason: Rickey was on his way out of St. Louis with the Brooklyn
Dodgers waiting to hire him, and Yogi looked so good to Rickey that he thought he could keep the kid on ice until he could sign him
for the Dodgers. Berra eventually confirmed that he got a telegram from Rickey inviting him to report to Bear Mountain, in upstate
New York, where the Dodgers had spring training for part of World War II.

The problem was that, in the interim, the Yankees got Berra. "He only wants $500?" Johnny Schulte, the Yankee scout who signed
him, asked the bird dog who'd referred the kid to him. "He's worth ten times that much. He's better than Garagiola, that kid the
Cardinals signed." Schulte had no idea Berra would develop into a Hall of Fame catcher; he merely thought Berra would be more
likely to stick as a regular player in due course than Garagiola was.

RIP Joe. Baseball certainly is a funny game.

Garry Shandling, the standup comic whose dry delivery became the trademark for a pair of beloved television comedies, died Thursday. He was 66.

Sources told the gossip site TMZ that Shandling had collapsed suddenly and been rushed to a Los Angeles hospital, where he later died.

Best known for a pair of critically acclaimed television shows, “It’s Garry Shandling’s Show” (1986-1990) and “The Larry Sanders Show” (1992-1998), about a fake late night talk show, Shandling has long been one of the most resected figures in the industry.
Shandling, seen here in 1998, won an Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for "The Larry Sanders Show."

Shandling won an Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for "The Larry Sanders Show."

Born in Chicago in 1949 and raised in Tuscon, Ariz., Shandling kicked off his showbiz career in the '70s writing for sitcoms , “Sanford and Son” and “Welcome Back Kotter.”

But a fateful car accident in 1977 led to a different road -- standup comedy.

Why would boomer entertainers be any different from others?

There are several of the top music people from the era of the very best music, turning about 70 and still creative and hard working. Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Rod Stewart, Van Morrison to name just a few.

Not to mention this Over 70 guy, Seasick Steve

Because entertainers who came on in the 60's and 70's in particular often lived hard, especially with the cocaine. They just didn't know or think about the consequences at the time.

Musicians had been abusing substances since long before the 60s and 70s. Robert Johnson, Billie Holiday and Art Blakey to name just a few. And from the 50s Elvis, Johnny Cash, Glenn Campbell, too.

More occupational and less generational.

Which is why I qualified to entertainers. But as pop culture exploded from the 60's on, so did the drugs, and things ratcheted from there. The chickens will come home to roost.

Believe me, it won't get better as the X'ers and Millenials age either.

I always wondered what it drew on, it was very similar to the family stories of that time from the foothills of Alabama and Tennessee, so it seemed like the real deal.

It's hard to even watch the original movie, reminds me so much of grandma and all the brothers and sisters that I just break down.

Oh, that's sad!  Earl Hamner brought to the screen healthy family life.  So many on the left mocked The Waltons as 'unrealistic,' but they clearly had never seen a loving family at work.

RIP, Mr. Hamner.

Mother Mary Angelica, founder of EWTN Catholic radio and TV, dies at 92

Born Rita Antoinette Rizzo into a childhood of poverty, she began pursuing life as a nun at age 21. A devout Roman Catholic from birth, she founded the Our Lady of the Angels Monastery in 1962. Her 1981 founding of Eternal Word Television Network was one of the first efforts from a Roman Catholic to branch out into the full-scale televangelism of contemporaries such as Pat Robertson (who gave Mother Angelica his support during her early years in television).

Mother Angelica was a staunch conservative in Catholic circles, closely aligned with Pope John Paul II, and often sparred with other Catholic clergy, prompting EWTN to hire additional staff in 2001, who insisted on adherence to the official church dogma in order to maintain the Vatican's blessing. She retired from EWTN in 2001 following a stroke, living a cloistered life from then until her death on Easter Sunday.

An artist friend of mine helped with set design for Mother Angelica in the early or mid-80s and said she was just as sweet as she appeared on TV.

Sounds absolutely awful.  I can't imagine the pain.

There may not be a lot of others who agree, but I absolutely loved her as Martha Washington in the George Washington mini-series ('90's?) where Barry Bostwick played George.

She made Martha seem like a delightful and devoted wife to a man she deeply admired.

I wonder if this is a record of some kind---Patty Duke won an Oscar for playing Helen Keller, then eventually
went on to win an Emmy for playing Anne Sullivan, Keller's teacher. I don't know of any other actor to win
an Oscar for one role in a production and then an Emmy for another role in, essentially, the same production.

She had the guts to overcome her abusive agents and her bipolarity and remake her life and career happily.

RIP Anna Marie.

Part of it's simply because it's the baby boomer era and there were simply a lot more BIRTHS in 1946, hence a lot more deaths once their time comes.

Yes.  But in my opinion, someone who was born in 1946 shouldn't be dying yet.  69 isn't very old these days.

It seems, however, that a lot are.

I don't know how old it is to be to young to die... but I plan on living long enough to see my children get everything they never had growing up so that I can move in with them.

Patty started so many heated arguments between me and my sister over who would have control over our one TV. Me wanting to watch Gilligan, Adams Family, the Munsters, F-troop, Flintstones, and the rest of the great kids shows of that era, and my sister wanting to watch Patty Duke or worse, the Flying Nun.

RIP Patty.    Oh and sis,  I now have the full seasons on DVD of  Gilligan, F-Troop, Flintstones, and many of my other favorites if you ever want to come over to watch TV and have a fight for old times sake.

I hope your sister won the fight once in a while so that you got to see those adorable "identical cousins, who walked alike and talked alike..... (you could lose your mind!)".  It was a really fun show!  ^-^
