Robert Conquest, Esteemed Soviet Union Historian, Dies at 98

Robert Conquest, the Anglo-American historian famous for his writings on the Soviet Union, died at the age of 98 on Monday in Palo Alto, California.

The Telegraph writes in his obituary:

An ardent Bolshevik as a young man, Conquest became a bitter foe of Soviet “Socialism.” He had first visited Russia in 1937 as a youthful devotee of the great experiment. It was a half century before he returned in 1989, having spent his life between chronicling the horrors the country had endured, and emerging, in the view of the Oxford historian Mark Almond, as “one of the few Western heroes of the collapse of Soviet Communism.”

Most notable of Conquest’s works was The Great Terror, which was the first detailed account to chronicle the horrors of Joseph Stalin’s rule in the Soviet Union between 1937 to 1939. According to his estimates–which were eventually deemed high but relatively accurate–20 million people died under Stalin’s rule due to famine, Soviet labor camps and executions.

Conquest’s work won him appreciation from world leaders like Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher, who even consulted with Conquest regarding how to deal with Soviet Russia.

Frank Gifford, Legendary Monday Night Football Sportscaster and Husband of Kathie Lee Gifford, Dead at 84
Quote
Legendary Monday Night Football broadcaster Frank Gifford, the husband of Today co-host Kathie Lee Gifford, died Sunday of natural causes. He was 84.

“It is with deepest sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and friend Frank Gifford,” said the Gifford Family in a statement. “Frank died suddenly on this beautiful Sunday morning of natural causes at his Connecticut home. We rejoice in the extraordinary life he was privileged to live, and we feel grateful and blessed to have been loved by such an amazing human being. We ask that our privacy be respected at this difficult time and we thank you for your prayers.”

Before launching his sport casting career, Gifford spent 12 seasons with the New York Giants, making eight pro Bowl appearances and winning the MVP award in 1956.

Gifford earned an Emmy nod in 1976 (for Outstanding Sports Personality), and in ’97 was a recipient of the Sports Emmys’ Lifetime Achievement Award.

He played himself in a number of sports-themed sitcoms, including Spin City and Coach.

FOX News:
Quote
Frank Gifford, a Hall of Fame football player for the New York Giants and a legendary broadcaster, died Sunday at his Connecticut home of natural causes, his family announced. He was just seven days shy of his 85th birthday.

Gifford is survived, among others, by his wife, television personality Kathy Lee Gifford.

His family said in a statement: "We rejoice in the extraordinary life he was privileged to live, and we feel grateful and blessed to have been loved by such an amazing human being."

Gifford was a No. 1 draft pick by the Giants in 1952 and enjoyed a versatile career with New York, playing both offense and defense. He was named NFL Player of the Year in 1956 and named to seven Pro Bowls for three different positions – defensive back, halfback and flanker.

Though Gifford was the centerpiece of a Giants offense that went to five NFL title games in the 1950s and '60s, he experienced highs and lows as an NFL player. Gifford fumbled twice early in the 1958 NFL championship game, both of which led to Baltimore Colts touchdowns, and later came up short on a critical third down. The Colts eventually won 23-17 in the league's first overtime game. The thrilling finish helped popularize the NFL and was dubbed "The Greatest Game Ever Played," although not by Gifford.

"Not my greatest game," Gifford told the AP in 2008. "I fumbled going out (of the end zone) and I fumbled going in."

Gifford and his teammates felt he was robbed by an incorrectly spotted ball with less than three minutes left in the fourth quarter, though video technology employed for a 50th anniversary documentary indicated the call was correct. In any event, the Giants were forced to punt in the '58 game, leading to a famous drive led by Colts quarterback Johnny Unitas to send it into overtime.

Gifford had his best year in 1956, rushing for 819 yards, picking up 603 yards receiving and scoring nine touchdowns in 12 games. The Giants routed the Chicago Bears 47-7 at Yankee Stadium, where Gifford shared a locker with Mickey Mantle.

A crushing hit by 233-pound Eagles linebacker Chuck Bednarik in November 1960 flattened Gifford and likely shortened his football career. Bednarik was pictured standing over the unconscious Gifford, pumping his fist in a celebration thought by many to be over the top. Gifford was in the hospital for 10 days and sidelined until 1962.

In 12 seasons, all with New York, Gifford scored 34 rushing touchdowns and 43 receiving touchdowns.

His numbers led to his election to the Hall of Fame in 1977 and Gifford's jersey number, 16, was retired by the Giants in 2000.

After he retired following the 1964 season, the flexible Gifford turned to broadcasting. After initially working with CBS, he joined ABC's "Monday Night Football" in 1971, at first as a play-by-play announcer and then as an analyst.

Later in life he stayed in the spotlight through his marriage to Kathie Lee Gifford, who famously called him a "human love machine" and "lamb-chop" to her millions of viewers.

Gifford hosted "Wide World of Sports," covered several Olympics — his call of Frank Klammer's gold medal run in 1976 is considered a broadcasting masterpiece — and announced 588 consecutive NFL games for ABC, not even taking time off after the death of his mother shortly before a broadcast in 1986.

While he worked with others, including Dan Dierdorf, Al Michaels, Joe Namath and O.J. Simpson, Gifford was most known for the eight years he served as a calm buffer between the folksy Don Meredith and acerbic Howard Cosell.

In its early years the show was a cultural touchstone, with cities throwing parades for the visiting announcers and celebrities such as John Lennon and Ronald Reagan making appearances.

"I hate to use the words 'American institution,' but there's no other way to put it, really," Gifford told The Associated Press in 1993. "There's nothing else like it."

A handsome straight-shooter who came off as earnest and sincere, Gifford was popular with viewers, even if some accused him of being a shill for the NFL. When he wasn't on the field, Gifford tried to put his movie-star good looks to use in Hollywood, appearing in about a dozen films, most notably the 1959 submarine movie "Up Periscope."

Born Aug. 16, 1930, in Santa Monica, Calif., Frank Newton Gifford was the son of an itinerant oil worker. Growing up in Depression-era California, Gifford estimated he moved 47 times before entering high school, occasionally sleeping in parks or the family car and eating dog food. He was a star at Bakersfield High School and was an All-American during his senior season at the University of Southern California.

(CNN)—Julian Bond, a lifelong civil rights leader and former board chairman of the NAACP, has died. He was 75.

Bond died Saturday night after a brief illness in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, which he served as founding president in the 1970s.

The Tennessee native was on the forefront of the 1960s civil rights movement and was among activists who demanded equal rights for African-Americans.

Cause of death not stated in this particular story, and in another piece, "after a short, unspecified illness."

'Awakenings' Author, Famed Neurologist Oliver Sacks Dies at 82

NEW YORK — Dr. Oliver Sacks, whose books like "The Man Who Mistook His Wife For a Hat" probed distant ranges of human experience by compassionately portraying people with severe and sometimes bizarre neurological conditions, has died. He was 82.

Sacks died Sunday at his home in New York City, his assistant, Kate Edgar, said.

Sacks had announced in February 2015 that he was terminally ill with a rare eye cancer that had spread to his liver.

As a practicing neurologist, Sacks looked at some of his patients with a writer's eye and found publishing gold.

In his best-selling 1985 book, he described a man who really did mistake his wife's face for his hat while visiting Sacks' office, because his brain had difficulty interpreting what he saw. Another story in the book featured autistic twins who had trouble with ordinary math but who could perform other amazing calculations.

Discover magazine ranked it among the 25 greatest science books of all time in 2006, declaring, "Legions of neuroscientists now probing the mysteries of the human brain cite this book as their greatest inspiration."

[float=right][/float]Dr. Wayne Dyer, motivational speaker, dies at 75

Dyer was the author of the 1976 book Your Erroneous Zones, which sold tens of millions of copies. (I'll be honest with you, I don't really know much about the guy other than he was apparently pretty popular among some of my New Age-oriented acquaintances, and apparently he was the guy who officiated Ellen DeGeneres's same-sex wedding to Portia de Rossi.) He died in his sleep of unknown causes, but was apparently expecting to die soon.

Milner began his career in late 1940s, appearing in war films including the John Wayne starrers Sands Of Iwo Jima (1949) and Operation Pacific (1951) and Halls Of Montezuma with Richard Widmark and Jack Palance. In 1952, he made his first of several appearances on the TV version of Dragnet, the start of what would be a long small-screen relationship with writer-producer-actor Jack Webb. In 1954, Milner landed a regular role on the final season of sitcom The Stu Erwin Show, after we his career was focused in television.

Milner had supporting roles in a few more movies — including the star-packed pics Mister Roberts (1955), Sweet Smell Of Success (1957) and Gunfight At The O.K. Corral (1957) — before he began guesting in such late-’50s/early-’60s TV favorites as The Life Of Riley, Wagon Train and The Twilight Zone. "Judy Carne, ‘Laugh-In’s’ ‘Sock it to Me’ Girl, Dies at 76"

"Actress Judy Carne, best known for being the “Sock it to me!” girl on “Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In” in the ’60s, died on Sept. 3, according to the Telegraph. She was 76.

Carne rose to overnight fame with her appearances on “Laugh-In,” where the bouncy actress’ zany persona would be doused with water every time she uttered the phrase “Sock it to me,” accidentally or not. She acted on the sketch comedy show for two years, making the occasional appearance in the third season.

Carne was also known for her tumultuous relationship with Burt Reynolds. She was the actor’s first wife, marrying him in 1963 before they divorced in 1965. She detailed their relationship, confessing to partaking in several affairs and struggling with drug addiction, in her 1985 autobiography “Laughing on the Outside, Crying on the Inside: The Bittersweet Saga of the Sock-It-To-Me Girl.”

She battled heavily with drug addiction after leaving “Laugh-In,” being charged with heroin possession and prescription forgery in the late ’70s. She was acquitted of the heroin charge."

I don't think so. Darla came a little later. I don't know if her character had a name (generally only a few of the leads had actual on-screen character names in the silent era).

Moses Malone, 76ers’ ‘Chairman of the Boards,’ Dies at 60

"Moses Malone, the N.B.A. center known as the Chairman of the Boards for prodigious rebounding that propelled him to the Basketball Hall of Fame and acclaim as one of the top 50 players in the league’s first half-century, died during the weekend in Norfolk, Va. He was 60.

Malone’s death was announced Sunday by the Philadelphia 76ers, whom he helped lead to the 1983 N.B.A. championship.

The Norfolk police said in a statement that Malone was found unresponsive in his room at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott shortly before 8 a.m. Sunday by hotel workers, and that he was pronounced dead there.

Officer Daniel Hudson, the chief public information officer for the police, said there were “no signs of foul play.” The Virginia chief medical examiner’s office in Norfolk said that a pathologist would examine Malone’s body on Monday."

60 seems awfully young to me, especially when it involves a star athlete like Malone.

Gary Richrath, lead guitarist of REO Speedwagon, dies at 65

Richrath joined REO Speedwagon in 1970. He had a hand in writing a few of the band's earliest hits, particularly "Ridin' the Storm Out," "Take It on the Run" and "In Your Letter." His work was later overshadowed by that of lead singer Kevin Cronin, who began writing a string of major commercial hits for the band. He left the band in 1989, reuniting once in 2013. No cause of death was stated.

Art critic Brian Sewell dies aged 84

Art critic Brian Sewell has died aged 84, it has been confirmed.

Sewell, who was the art critic at the London Evening Standard newspaper for more than 30 years, was well known for his outspoken and often controversial views.

In a 2012 interview with the BBC he said art was something "that brings people like me to life" and said he became an art critic "by accident".

He began his career at Christie's auction house in the 1950s.

Not well known in the USA, I know. Imagine if Noel Coward were an art critic instead of a playwright.

Yogi Berra, Yankees Hall of Fame Catcher With a One-of-a-Kind Wit, Dies at 90

Quote
Yogi Berra, one of baseball's greatest catchers and characters, who as a player was a mainstay of 10 Yankee championship teams and as a manager led both the Yankees and Mets to the World Series -- but who may be more widely known as an ungainly but lovable cultural figure, inspiring a cartoon character and issuing a seemingly limitless supply of unwittingly witty epigrams known as Yogi-isms -- died on Tuesday. He was 90.

The cause was a heart attack, his wife, Mary Guillermin, said.

In addition to big-budget extravaganzas, Mr. Guillermin (the name is French, but he pronounced it GILL-er-min) directed a raft of films in various genres from the end of the 1940s until he retired from filmmaking in the 1980s.

Kevin Corcoran, known to generations of Disney fans as 'Moochie,' dies at 66

Quote
Disney child actor Kevin Corcoran, who played the irrepressible Moochie in the "Spin and Marty" serials on "The Mickey Mouse Club" and went on to play roles in films such as "Old Yeller," died Tuesday at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank. He was 66.

The cause was colorectal cancer, said his wife, Laura.

Moochie -- an adorable, talkative kid who was always getting into jams -- was not far removed from the real-life Corcoran, said David Stollery, who played Marty. Corcoran was 7 when he started appearing in the series that took place on a dude ranch.

[float=right][/float]Cory Wells, singer with Three Dog Night, dies at 74

Wells, along with Danny Hutton and Chuck Negron, formed the 1970s vocal trio known for its powerful, blue-eyed soul covers of songs that would eventually become hits in their own right. He sang lead on several, including "Mama Told Me Not to Come." He remained with the band until his death.

Wells, a native of Western New York, died unexpectedly in Dunkirk, having lived a modest lifestyle even at the height of the band's fame.

Marty Ingels, Actor and Shirley Jones' Husband, Dies at 79

"Ingels was known for his voiceover work, along with the 1960's sitcom 'I'm Dickens, He's Fenster.'

Marty Ingels, an actor and comedian known for his co-starring role in the 1960s sitcom I'm Dickens, He's Fenster, has died, wife Shirley Jones announced Wednesday. He was 79.

Ingels died Wednesday in Tarzana, Calif., as a result of complications from a stroke.

"He often drove me crazy, but there’s not a day I won’t miss him and love him to my core," Jones said in a statement."

Ingels did a lot more TV after "I'm Dickens, He's Fenster", mostly as a guest star. He was a funny guy because he was so quirky. Plus he landed Shirley which wasn't such a bad deal.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maureen_O%27Hara

Maureen O'Hara (17 August 1920 – 24 October 2015) was an Irish-American film actress and singer. She was first educated at the John Street West Girls' School near Thomas Street in Dublin's Liberties Area. From the ages of 6 to 17 she trained in drama, music and dance, and at the age of 10 joined the Rathmines Theatre Company and worked in amateur theatre in the evenings, after her lessons.[3] The famously red-headed O'Hara was noted for playing fiercely passionate heroines with a highly sensible attitude. She often worked with director John Ford and longtime friend John Wayne. Her autobiography, 'Tis Herself, was published in 2004 and was a New York Times Bestseller. She was one of the last living actresses from the Golden Age of Hollywood.

Although O'Hara was never nominated for a competitive Academy Award, in November 2014 she was presented with an Honorary Academy Award with the inscription "To Maureen O'Hara, one of Hollywood's brightest stars, whose inspiring performances glowed with passion, warmth and strength". O'Hara joined Myrna Loy in being the only actresses ever to receive an Academy Award for acting without having been nominated previously.[4]

Maureen O'Hara, spirited movie star, dies at 95

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. –  Maureen O'Hara, the flame-haired Irish movie star who appeared in classics ranging from the grim "How Green Was My Valley" to the uplifting "Miracle on 34th Street" and bantered unforgettably with John Wayne in several films, has died. She was 95.

O'Hara died in her sleep at her home in Boise, Idaho, said Johnny Nicoletti, her longtime manager.

"She passed peacefully surrounded by her loving family as they celebrated her life listening to music from her favorite movie, 'The Quiet Man,'" said a statement from her family.

"As an actress, Maureen O'Hara brought unyielding strength and sudden sensitivity to every role she played. Her characters were feisty and fearless, just as she was in real life. She was also proudly Irish and spent her entire lifetime sharing her heritage and the wonderful culture of the Emerald Isle with the world," said a family biography.

O'Hara came to Hollywood to star in the 1939 "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" and went on to a long career.

During her movie heyday, she became known as the Queen of Technicolor because of the camera's love affair with her vivid hair, pale complexion and fiery nature.

But she also had talent.

"I proved there was a bloody good actress in me," she told the British newspaper The Telegraph last year. "It wasn't just my face. I gave bloody good performances."

She never was nominated for a competitive Oscar but received an honorary Academy Award last year.

After her start in Hollywood with "Hunchback" and some minor films at RKO, she was borrowed by 20th Century Fox to play the beautiful young daughter in the 1941 saga of a coal-mining family, "How Green Was My Valley."

"How Green Was My Valley" went on to win five Oscars including best picture and best director for John Ford, beating out Orson Welles and "Citizen Kane" among others. It was the first of several films she made under the direction of Ford, whose grouchy nature seemed to melt in her presence — although he once punched her hard in the jaw at a party.

The popularity of "How Green Was My Valley" confirmed O'Hara's status as a Hollywood star. RKO and Fox shared her contract, and her most successful films were made at Fox.

They included "Miracle on 34th Street," the classic 1947 Christmas story in which O'Hara was little Natalie Wood's skeptical mother and among those charmed by Edmund Gwenn as a man who believed he was Santa Claus.

Other films included the costume drama "The Foxes of Harrow" (Rex Harrison, 1947); the comedy "Sitting Pretty" (Clifton Webb, 1948); and the sports comedy "Father Was a Fullback" (Fred MacMurray, 1949).

Often she sailed the high seas in colorful pirate adventures such as "The Black Swan" with Tyrone Power, "The Spanish Main" with Paul Henreid, "Sinbad the Sailor" with Douglas Fairbanks Jr., and "Against All Flags" with Errol Flynn.

With Ford's "Rio Grande" in 1950, O'Hara became Wayne's favorite leading lady. The most successful of their five films was 1952's "The Quiet Man," also directed by Ford, in which she matched Wayne blow for blow in a classic donnybrook.

In one scene, she recalled, Wayne drags her across a field that he and Ford had covered with sheep dung.

With her Irish spunk, she could stand up to the rugged Duke, both on and off screen. She was proud when he remarked in an interview that he preferred to work with men — "except for Maureen O'Hara; she's a great guy."

Character still matters.  It always matters.

"'Miss Moneypenny' Actress Lois Maxwell Dies at 80"

'Lois Maxwell, who played Miss Moneypenny in 14 James Bond films, has died.

The Canadian actress, who was living in Australia, passed away at the age of 80.

She starred alongside Sean Connery in the first Bond film, "Dr No," in 1962.

Maxwell continued in the role until 1985, when she played M's secretary for the last time in "A View To A Kill" with Roger Moore.

Moore paid tribute to the star, calling her his 'lucky token."

He told Sky News she would be remembered with "great affection", adding: "She will certainly be missed by me, and I'm sure by millions of fans around the world."

http://www.foxnews.com/story/2007/09/30/miss-moneypenny-actress-lois-maxwell-dies-at-80.html

I did a thorough search to see if her demise had already been posted and found nothing despite the fact the story is dated 09/30. God rest her soul. Everyone loved Ms Moneypenny.
