Top 10 lobbying spenders on energy, the environment
By Timothy Cama | 01/27/2023 06:42 AM EST

The Inflation Reduction Act helped drive lobbying spending increases.

This story was updated at 9:30 a.m. EST.

The biggest climate bill in U.S. history helped fuel heavy lobbying from chemical, oil and electric utility companies.

Records disclosed to Congress in recent days showed that the American Chemistry Council came out on top, spending $19.8 million. That’s a 19 percent increase over 2021.

The combined spending of three petroleum interests far outpaced that figure, however. Occidental Petroleum Corp., ConocoPhillips Co. and Exxon Mobil Corp. combined for a whopping $27.2 million in spending in 2022, a 23 percent increase over 2021.

It was a busy year for many industries, headlined by the Inflation Reduction Act, which includes $369 billion in climate change and energy spending.

I wonder if there are more up-to-date figures available.
Quote
The average weight of people in the United States and North America as a whole is higher than any other region in the world.

In 2012, BMC Public Health reported the following average weights by region. The averages were calculated using data from 2005, and relied on combined statistics for men and women:

    North America: 177.9 pounds
    Oceania, including Australia: 163.4 pounds
    Europe: 156.1 pounds
    Latin America/Caribbean: 149.7 pounds
    Africa: 133.8 pounds
    Asia: 127.2 pounds

The world average for an adult’s weight is 136.7 pounds.  ...

Our most recent trips to Europe were in 2017 and 2018, and we saw quite a few overweight locals in Germany, France and UK.

WARSAW, May 10 (Reuters) – Thousands of protesters marched through the streets of the Polish capital Warsaw on Friday to show their opposition to European Union environmental regulations that farmers say are driving them out of business.

Farmers were joined by representatives of other branches of the Solidarity trade union, which organised the protest, such as miners and workers from the automotive sector.
Farmers in Poland and elsewhere in the bloc have been protesting in recent months, opens new tab against cheap food imports from Ukraine and restrictions placed on them by the EU’s Green Deal to tackle climate change.

In a sea of red and white Polish flags and Solidarity banners, the protesters, many wearing yellow high-visibility vests, brandished placards with slogans like “Down with the Green Deal, Down with the European Union” and “Green Poison”.

Climate Change / Wind Turbine-related Radiation

Wind Turbine-related Radiation
By John Droz, Jr. -- May 10, 2024
“Lobbyists and other politically correct parties paint industrial wind energy as “free, clean, and green.” With no consequences for lying, is it any wonder that we are drowning in dishonesty?”

This is the last in a series I’ve posted about radiation and some of our energy sources. It started with a commentary arguing that there are good reasons to categorize Nuclear power as a “renewable” source of electrical energy. Next was Nuclear Power Radiation — Part 1 (which outlined radiation from normal nuclear power operations, waste, and misc). Then there was Nuclear Power Radiation — Part 2, which briefly covered the rest of the well-known nuclear radiation possibilities.

Here I will give a quickie overview of a radiation source that most people have never heard about. Lobbyists and other politically correct parties paint industrial wind energy as “free, clean, and green.” Although none of that is true, this deceptiveness is dismissed as marketing puffery. With no consequences for lying, is it any wonder that we are drowning in dishonesty?

A Note to The Guardian – Opinion Is NOT Science

A recent article in the newspaper The Guardian reports that some of the ”world’s top climate scientists” believe that disaster is soon to occur due to what they claim will be an additional degree of warming on the planet. This is a false narrative. The earth has experienced similar temperatures in the past without disastrous consequences. In addition, one should note that opinion when it comes to climate science has had a terrible track record.

The opinion piece, titled “World’s top climate scientists expect global heating to blast past 1.5C target,” starts off with gloom and doom in the first couple of paragraphs:

Almost 80% of the respondents, all from the authoritative Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), foresee at least 2.5C of global heating, while almost half anticipate at least 3C (5.4F). Only 6% thought the internationally agreed 1.5C (2.7F) limit would be met.

Many of the scientists envisage a “semi-dystopian” future, with famines, conflicts, and mass migration, driven by heatwaves, wildfires, floods, and storms of an intensity and frequency far beyond those that have already struck.

NOAA’s Latest Temperature Climate Data Establishes There is NO CLIMATE EMERGENCY

Guest essay by Larry Hamlin

NOAA has updated its Contiguous U.S. National Temperature Index Temperature Anomaly data and its National, Statewide, County and City Time Series temperature data (as well as other climate data parameters) through the April 2024 period.

NOAA’s National Time Series USCRN maximum temperature anomaly dataset for the Contiguous U.S. is shown below with the data updated through April 2024.

This NOAA data clearly establishes that there is no upward trending anomaly signature for the Contiguous U.S. monthly maximum temperature anomalies for the period commencing in January 2005 through April 2024.

‘The stakes could not be higher’: world is on edge of climate abyss, UN warns
Top climate figures respond to Guardian survey of scientists who expect temperatures to soar, saying leaders must act radically

Climate scientists expect global heating to blast past 1.5C target

The world is on the verge of a climate abyss, the UN has warned, in response to a Guardian survey that found that hundreds of the world’s foremost climate experts expect global heating to soar past the international target of 1.5C.

A series of leading climate figures have reacted to the findings, saying the deep despair voiced by the scientists must be a renewed wake-up call for urgent and radical action to stop burning fossil fuels and save millions of lives and livelihoods. Some said the 1.5C target was hanging by a thread, but it was not yet inevitable that it would be passed, if an extraordinary change in the pace of climate action could be achieved.

The Guardian got the views of almost 400 senior authors of reports by the authoritative Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Almost 80% expected a rise of at least 2.5C above preindustrial levels, a catastrophic level of heating, while only 6% thought it would stay within the 1.5C limit. Many expressed their personal anguish at the lack of climate action.

“The goal of limiting global warming to 1.5C is hanging by a thread,” said the official spokesperson for António Guterres, the UN secretary general. “The battle to keep 1.5C alive will be won or lost in the 2020s – under the watch of political and industry leaders today. They need to realise we are on the verge of the abyss. The science is clear and so are the world’s scientists: the stakes for all humanity could not be higher.”
