Blinken in Hot Seat: Biden’s Secretary of State to Face Music in Congress over Deadly Afghanistan Exit

Republicans are planning to capitalize on their first shot to grill Secretary of State Antony Blinken over President Joe Biden’s botched U.S. troop withdrawal from Afghanistan when he testifies before the House Foreign Affairs Committee Monday afternoon and the panel’s Senate counterpart Tuesday.

Republicans lambasted the State Department’s failed efforts to evacuate all Americans and Afghan allies before Biden caved to the Taliban and pulled out all U.S. troops by August 31, including those helping get U.S. citizens out.

Blinken will face the “most aggressive questioning of his career,” Axios predicted on Sunday.

The news outlet interviewed lawmakers and staff about what they plan to ask the top U.S. diplomat in charge of the evacuation efforts that left 13 American troops dead, 18 wounded, and scores of Afghan casualties.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken is set to defend the Biden administration’s withdrawal from Afghanistan after 20 years of U.S. involvement ahead of what is sure to be sharp questioning from lawmakers of both parties frustrated with the chaotic departure.

Blinken will appear before the House Foreign Affairs Committee Monday after an evacuation effort that airlifted 124,000 people out of the country — but that still left many vulnerable Afghans behind.

“There’s no evidence that staying longer would have made the Afghan security forces or the Afghan government any more resilient or self-sustaining. If 20 years and hundreds of billions of dollars in support, equipment, and training did not suffice, why would another year, or five, or ten, make a difference?” Blinken wrote in his opening testimony shared ahead of the Monday afternoon hearing.

is continuing to advance the false narrative that our options in Afghanistan were to retreat immediately or escalate dramatically. This is just wrong and misleading. We could have planned a thoughtful withdrawal that did not put Americans & allies at such grave risk.

Blinken doesn’t answer. It’s why members must ask short, pointed questions: Minimum number of Americans —passport holders and green card holders— and number of eligible SIVs. Blinken is just going to filibuster longer questions/statements. 2

McCaul asks Blinken if he can guarantee that the U.S. will get all Afghan SIVs out, warning that they’ll be “executed” if not. Blinken doesn’t give a direct answer.

Secretary Blinken can spin this anyway he wants but the facts don't change.

He and President Biden created the largest hostage crisis in history by abandoning Americans and our allies to the Taliban.
