The virus will keep evolving. Here’s what scientists do and don’t know about the future of Covid-19.

The delta variant of the coronavirus is here. It’s scary. It seems to spread more easily than any of the variants we’ve seen so far. It’s quickly becoming the dominant strain of the virus, outcompeting other strains. But it may not be the last.

Watching the news about delta, I keep wondering: What’s next? How might SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, continue to evolve? After all, the work of evolution is never over. Change is constant.

A year from now, might there be an omega variant that’s twice as transmissible as delta? “The big answer to your question is that we don’t really know,” Kari Debbink, a virologist who studies viral evolution at Bowie State University, says.

She’s not the only one. I asked several virologists and infectious disease experts how Covid-19 will continue to evolve, and they all told me there’s no way of knowing for sure.

“I think anyone who gives you a definitive answer is probably full of it,” says Adam Lauring, a physician and virologist at the University of Michigan Medical School.

It's a virus.  It's never going to be eradicated completely.  Hepatitis, Flu, HIV, Aids; all viruses.  Treatments are available with some being more successful than others, but there is no cure.  Yet we don't see the fear mongering surrounding these other viruses.

It is not getting worse. It is getting better. More contagious, less lethal. That fits the pattern of a viral cycle. The more deadly strains tend to kill their hosts and don't propagate as well as the less lethal strains. the trend is toward more contagious and less lethal and as that happens more people get it and become immune... till herd immunity occurs.

There is some controversy right now over the effectiveness of the Pfizer vaccine; some reports show that it loses efficacy after 6 months, some reports are saying 4 months. Yet the FDA is pushing to approve this vaccine.

So, will people continue to get booster shots?? Will boosters be needed for each variant? To the best of my knowledge there is no test to determine which variant a person has, so  how can they truly know the effectiveness of the vaccines against Delta or any other future variant??

There are reports as well @Victoria33 that people who have had the vaccines (I don't know which brand) are dying from COVID as the Delta variant has appeared; in fact it is suspected that they would have been better off without the vaccine to fight off COVID.
