CULTUREMAP By Teresa Gubbins Feb 2, 2021

Texas State House Representative Richard Raymond continues his heroic quest to allow us to buy liquor every day of the week with the introduction of HB 937, a new bill striking down the state's Prohibition-era ban on distilled spirits sales on Sundays.

The bill would also extend the hours at package stores: Monday through Saturday from 9 am to 10 pm, and Sunday from 12 noon to 10 pm.

Since 2002, 21 states have passed laws permitting sales on Sunday, bringing the total to 43 states.

The only states that still have sales bans on Sunday: Alabama, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, and Utah.

Heroic?
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.

-Dwight Eisenhower-

"The [U.S.] Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government."

-Ayn Rand-

I can remember back to probably sometimes in the mid '80's where all stores with a few exceptions (pharmacies, gas, groceries) were closed on Sundays in Texas.

As far as this, I really don't care one way or the other.
I display the Confederate Battle Flag in honor of my great great great grandfathers who spilled blood at Wilson's Creek and Shiloh.  5 others served in the WBTS with honor too.

It seems like another distraction to me.

The old Blue Laws were the first that crossed my mind as well when I read this.  It seems like a minor thing to be dealing with right now.

I barely remember that time... When everyone shut off on Sunday and very little was open. I don't mean just likker, but everybody.

I remember it being handy, because there was a neighborhood grocery (kinda like that era's mini mart) owned by an old Jewish widow-woman who was closed Saturday, but open on Sunday, and more than once Mamma would send me over to pick up something she'd forgotten for Sunday dinner... Because hers was the only store open for a long ways around.

And I find that sad, that it went away. Even setting aside the Sabbath-keeping, the blessing of a day when everybody got to go home and be together, guaranteed once a week, is a terrible thing to lose.

It's Austin, where Willie Nelson is a hero.

I wonder what the package stores think about this? I've never had a problem with not being able to buy liquor on a Sunday because I simply buy it Monday through Saturday. If others are accustomed to buying around the Sunday restriction as well, they won't sell any extra and the package stores won't have any additional revenues while having to shoulder the additional expense of staffing for an extra day per week.
