Biden Covid advisor says U.S. lockdown of 4 to 6 weeks could control pandemic and revive economy

Dr. Michael Osterholm, a coronavirus advisor to President-elect Joe Biden, said a nationwide lockdown would help bring the virus under control in the U.S.
He said the government could borrow enough money to pay for a package that would cover lost income for individuals and governments during a shutdown.
“We could really watch ourselves cruising into the vaccine availability in the first and second quarter of next year while bringing back the economy long before that,” he said.

Shutting down businesses and paying people for lost wages for four to six weeks could help keep the coronavirus pandemic in check and get the economy on track until a vaccine is approved and distributed, said Dr. Michael Osterholm, a coronavirus advisor to President-elect Joe Biden.

Osterholm, who serves as director of the Center of Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, said earlier this week that the country is headed toward “Covid hell.” Cases are rising as more people grow tired of wearing masks and social distancing, suffering from so-called “pandemic fatigue,” he said Wednesday. Colder weather is also driving people indoors where the virus can spread more easily.

A nationwide lockdown would drive the number of new cases and hospitalizations down to manageable levels while the world awaits a vaccine, he told Yahoo Finance on Wednesday.

“We could pay for a package right now to cover all of the wages, lost wages for individual workers for losses to small companies to medium-sized companies or city, state, county governments. We could do all of that,” he said. “If we did that, then we could lockdown for four-to-six weeks.”

Lockdown to revive the economy?  In my old job, I'd had him  drug tested for cause.
I display the Confederate Battle Flag in honor of my great great great grandfathers who spilled blood at Wilson's Creek and Shiloh.  5 others served in the WBTS with honor too.

They have to do something so that that they can claim they defeated it later.

I'm not complying. Not going to wear a mask outside either.

Isn't that what they said in March, too?

It didn't work then, with weather conditions rapidly improving, and it won't work now.

Why would Democrats propose a massive, business- and job-destroying expense to productive Americans, in order to implement a policy that will soon be made unnecessary by both technology (vaccines) and nature (viral mutation)?

Because they never let an opportunity (to control your life) go to waste.
"The most terrifying force of death, comes from the hands of Men who wanted to be left Alone. They try, so very hard, to mind their own business and provide for themselves and those they love. They resist every impulse to fight back, knowing the forced and permanent change of life that will come from it. They know, that the moment they fight back, their lives as they have lived them, are over. -Alexander Solzhenitsyn

Doctor Osterholm and what private army? Because I do not think the US Army would enforce this unconstitutional tyranny.
If, as anti-Covid-vaxxers claim, https://www.poynter.org/fact-checking/2021/robert-f-kennedy-jr-said-the-covid-19-vaccine-is-the-deadliest-vaccine-ever-made-thats-not-true/ , https://gospelnewsnetwork.org/2021/11/23/covid-shots-are-the-deadliest-vaccines-in-medical-history/ , The Vaccine is deadly, where in the US have Pfizer and Moderna hidden the millions of bodies of those who died of "vaccine injury"? Is reality a Big Pharma Shill?

Millions now living should have died. Anti-Covid-Vaxxer ghouls hardest hit.

@libertybele
@others

Texas now has now had over one million cases.  Tuesday, there were 10,865 new cases.  There were 94 deaths on Tuesday.  Laredo and El Paso have increasing numbers every day.  El Paso had 1,292 new cases on Tuesday and 9 more deaths, total deaths 682.  There are 6 refrigerated trucks holding bodies there and 4 more trucks are on the way.  Beds in El Paso are full; patients are being air lifted to hospitals in other cities.

Deaths in the US today is 1,347.  There were 140,000 new cases; the highest daily case number since the virus began.  Also, 65,000 were put in hospitals today.  All states are having more cases except Maine and Vermont.

Something has to be done.  If it takes shutting down for a period of time and don't ask me how many weeks or months, then it has to happen.

You know I am very old and don't go to my church since they do not want anyone over 60 to go to church.  They have a Mass service on line on Saturday and Sunday and keep those up to see all week.  I do not leave the house except for doctor and have not been to one in a number of weeks and no doc appointments now.  I leave the house by computer and that is fine with me, except I really miss going to a casino.

England went on 3rd tier restriction this past Monday.  That is the "lock-down" tier.  No leaving the house except for food and doctor.  That will stay in effect until December 2nd.  Wales has been in lock-down, only leave home for food and doctor, for two weeks and came off that this past Monday.  I get a report on Wales and England every week from my son in Wales.

I know you members are going to hit on me since I say we have to shut down.  If you know a way that works to stop this virus, let me know.  I am considering going to @roamer_1 house and live with him in the mountains.   wink777

Everyone has their own opinion on this pandemic - I guess I would not require that the world stop to keep me healthy, I would take that responsibility on myself.

Closing down simply delays the inevitable - the virus will run its course. Unless a vaccine is developed in a timely manner. For which, in this case, we would owe president Trump.

For unvaccinated, we are looking at a winter of severe illness and death — if you’re unvaccinated — for themselves, their families, and the hospitals they’ll soon overwhelm. Sloe Joe Biteme 12/16
I will NOT comply.

Sorry, it's been done, and it failed.  Normal, adult people will rebel in the period of time required for a hat to fall to the ground.  They will not comply.

We will not be locked up again.

I think what bugged me about that was the "Do something/anything" mindset that informed the comments.  That is how freedoms are crushed and nations collapsed.

There isn't one.  And that includes shutting down.  The best course of action for you is to isolate yourself, end all shutdowns nationwide, and allow the virus to run its course naturally, instead of the current idiocy of extending it.

I'm jealous.

If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.

-Dwight Eisenhower-

"The [U.S.] Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government."

That's half right.  I do love using a blow torch to sear my steak!  It's also my lack of love for that nasty white crap that falls from the sky between November and March Every.  Damned.  Year.  LOL!  My feet were always cold, and speaking of colds, mine would start in October and last until April.  Every year.

I cannot tell you how great I felt that first "year without a Winter."

"We" don't have to shut down @Victoria33  ... you do.  You're 87.  It sounds like you're making the right decisions for your life; I hope you continue to do so.

Now please get out of the way and allow the rest of us to exercise the same right.

This virus will surrender when herd immunity is attained --- through a return to normal life --- but certainly not by mandating healthy Americans wear masks in their homes while hiding in the basement.
