I was born at Womack Hospital on Fort Bragg. Reared in the South. I can think of 62,871 things that people--especially black people--need to concern ourselves with more than confederate names of army bases. That being said, you'd have to be oblivious to cultural shift, tea leaves, and the current reality if you think GOP politicians are going to go to the mattresses over this issue.
Who the hell wants to be framed as defenders of the Confederacy right now? (besides Trump, who I genuinely believe is a tad touched)
“And the message is that if we're going to have bases throughout the United States, I think it should be with the names of individuals who fought for our country." Mike Rounds (R-S.D.)
Maybe, I'm wrong. Y'all tell me. How would you combat this sentiment? Leaving slavery out of it for the time being, when it is framed as "honoring traitors who killed Americans"--and I know the WBTS is far, far more nuanced than that--but expecting the overwhelming majority of the American people to take the time to discern nuance is a foolish endeavor. The messaging war in this case is a lopsided blowout among the electorate.
