I suppose detection would require a greater sensitivity and discrimination than an old Civil Defense Geiger counter...

Depends on the counter.  Sensitivity varies, and they have to have been calibrated since the fall of the USSR to be something you can depend on. You can build your own, too. (Google DIY radiation detector) and that can be fairly cheap for a basic unit.
