The Real Reasons Republicans Lost Virginia
By J.B. Seabolt and William Seabolt

Following the Virginia election debacle last Tuesday, Republican voters in the Old Dominion might feel tempted to despair of dreaming about a red Virginia ever again. Many seem disposed to wait out President Trump’s term under the impression that Republicans cannot win under Trump. However, the Virginia Republican Party failed to field viable candidates, use the political resources available to them, or articulate any sort of stance on electoral issues. Democrats did not win Virginia, nor did a massive turn in national sentiment doom the Republican Party; the Virginia State GOP ruined its own chances.

Perhaps most startling, the Virginia Republican Party failed to run candidates in ten out of forty (the 1st, 2nd, 18th, 29th, 30th, 31st, 34th, 35th, 36th, and 37th), fully one-quarter of Virginia senatorial races.  In contrast, the Democrats contested all races but one, the 23rd district.  A party cannot win elections without candidates.

The Republican Party also failed to contest twenty-three out of one hundred delegate races (the 11th, 32nd, 35th, 36th, 37th, 38th, 45th, 46th, 47th, 48th, 53rd, 57th, 67th, 69th, 70th, 74th, 77th, 79th, 86th, 89th, 90th, 92nd, and 95th districts), again about one-fourth.  While the Republican Party lost nearly a quarter of the House of Delegates seats by default, the Democrats contested all but seven races (the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 9th, 17th, 19th, and 78th districts).

How can the state GOP explain not having candidates to contest those races? It's almost as if they wanted the legislature to flip.

Because they support getting Democrats elected.  It's been that way for over a quarter century.

Its suspiciously similar to the flipping of the 2018 US House.

Its suspiciously similar to the flipping of the 2018 US House.

The only time I saw the Virginia GOP get off their asses and work was in 2013 when Ken Cuccinelli was the candidate.  They hated Cuccinelli so much that they went all out to raise money throughout the Commonwealth on behalf of Cuccinelli's campaign, and then sent the money out of state, depriving Cuccunelli of the funds.  This means that people who gave money specifically for Cuccunelli's election saw that money stolen by the GOP.  The Virginia GOP made sure they sucked up every available Cuccinelli campaign dollar they could, and then starved Cuccinelli of the money by giving it to Chris Christie instead.  Every one of them should burn in hell for it.

That same election, Republican Mark Obenshain actually won his race for Attorney General by over 1,200 votes.  But in the days following the election, the Virginia GOP sat on their hands and did nothing while Democrats across the Commonwealth manufactured more votes.  Three weeks later, the Democrat candidate would be declared the winner.  The State GOP did nothing.  Nothing.

Another key point of 2013 was the Libertarian vote.  The ACLU got a court order that did away with residency requirements for petition circulators.  This ruling allowing out-of-state canvassers to collect signatures to put a Libertarian candidate on the ballot.  They got their quota, got their candidate on the ballot (a rarity in Virginia).  That candidate proceeded to siphon off over 6% of the GOP vote.

Had there not been a Libertarian on the ballot, Lt. Gov Bill Bolling had planned to run as an independent to ensure Cuccuinelli's defeat, just as Marshall Coleman had done to Oliver North back in the 90s.

I'm still p*ssed at the GOP for supporting Lisa Murkowski against Joe Miller in Alaska in 2010. I'll never give the b*stards another penny.
