Mechanic who tampered with jetliner has ties to ISIS: feds

The American Airlines mechanic who disabled a key navigation system on a jetliner leaving Miami — saying he did it over a labor dispute — had grisly ISIS propaganda videos on his cellphone, federal prosecutors said in court on Wednesday.

Prosecutor Maria Medetis said that when investigators grilled the mechanic, Abdul-Majeed Marouf Ahmed Alani, after his arrest on Sept. 5, he told them he had an “evil side” and that he “wanted to do something to delay” the plane, which had 150 people onboard, the Miami Herald reported.

But a co-worker told investigators that Alani had once said his brother was a member of ISIS, and that he traveled to Iraq in March to visit him...

Of course profiling by nationality and religion would be immoral and wrong.  /s

Quote
A judge denied bail to the employee, who the authorities said told federal agents he had tampered with the plane because he was upset about an impasse over a union contract.

On July 17, the day of the flight, Mr. Alani tampered with the air data module system on Flight 2834 from Miami to Nassau in the Bahamas, investigators said in court documents. The system, located in a compartment beneath the cockpit and near the nose landing gear, keeps track of an aircraft’s speed and pitch as well as other critical flight data.

A pitot tube, used to determine airspeed, a measurement vital to controlling the plane, was also loose, investigators said. Ice buildup in a pitot tube’s intake led to the 2009 crash of Air France Flight 447 over the Atlantic.

The guy has been here for years and is a US citizen.  He had been working for the airline since 1988, well before most of us knew there were radical Muslims who wanted us all dead.

This is what I don't get:  this isn't some bored young punk with a chip on his shoulder who decides it would be cool to join ISIS.  He's 60 years old.  He took advantage of every opportunity this country gave him.   He has a well paying job.  Now he wants to kill us infidels?  What motivates a person to do that?

My kidney specialist is a Muslim from Syria.  He's not a radical and, I gather, not all that serious about his faith.  We were talking about ISIS and radical Muslims, and he said he is grateful to the US for his successful medical practice, his nice home and all the good things he, his wife and son enjoy.  Why would he be bitter against a country that has given him everything?

Once a moslum always a moslum. @Applewood   They are incompatible with our way of life, practicing the so called "religion" or not.
You don’t become cooler with age but you do care progressively less about being cool, which is the only true way to actually be cool.

Islam does not allow one to leave. Once you are "of the faith" the only way out is death.

I scoffed at the muslim's stated motive when the story first came out. Looks like some people want to do something again. Never believe a word out a muslim's mouth- taqiyya.
Principles matter. Words matter.

I don't know guys.  My doctor doesn't seem the type.  If you could talk to him, you might think otherwise.

He is genuinely upset about what goes on his native country.  He sill has family there and he worries about them all the time.  No love for ISIS or the regime running Syria.

I had a professor in college from Bangladesh who was a Muslim. In class one day he said to please not associate Muslims like him...and I quote...."with the crazy people from the Mideast."
I ate dinner at his home and met his family.  I met him outside of class many years after I graduated, and he was still the same very nice guy.
So no, I don't believe all Muslims are/think the same.
Nevertheless, this story about the airport worker is disturbing.

Applewood asks, in all honesty:
"This is what I don't get:  this isn't some bored young punk with a chip on his shoulder who decides it would be cool to join ISIS.  He's 60 years old.  He took advantage of every opportunity this country gave him.   He has a well paying job.  Now he wants to kill us infidels?  What motivates a person to do that?"

Here's your answer:
===============
"Every 'moderate' Muslim is a potential terrorist. The belief in Islam is like a tank of gasoline. It looks innocuous, until it meets the fire. For a 'moderate' Muslim to become a murderous jihadist, all it takes is a spark of faith.
It is time to put an end to the charade of "moderate Islam." There is no such thing as moderate Muslim. Muslims are either jihadists or dormant jihadists - moderate, they are not."

So he is an apostate.  There are no radical Muslims,  a "radical" Muslim is just one who actually believes in the Koran.
