New Yorkers shocked to find food prices rising after minimum wage hike

Jazz ShawPosted at 4:31 pm on January 30, 2019

The result of the Fight for 15 movement in New York City has finally gone into effect. The minimum wage jumped by 15% in many cases, to $15 per hour this month. This mostly affects employers of lower skill level workers, particularly in the food service and beverage industries. And now that labor costs have risen, restaurants from fast food joints to upper-end fine dining establishments have raised their prices. As a result, some people have had to make adjustments in their budgets and lifestyles, going out to eat less often and bringing their own lunches to work.

As you might imagine, that’s not only been annoying for the customers. It’s impacting the restaurant business as well. (NY Post)

Quote
New York City’s hotly contested minimum wage increase to $15 — up from $13 or $13.50, depending on employer size — rolled out citywide at the start of the year. And although that’s good news for NYC restaurant servers, patrons are grumbling about its impact on menu prices at their favorite eateries.

Ahead of the wage hike, the NYC Hospitality Alliance conducted a survey of 574 local food establishments in late 2018. They found that 87 percent of respondents planned to increase menu prices this year to offset the minimum wage bump. True to their promise, the cost of food has risen at various spots around the city.

“Basically, the prices will have gone up at every restaurant in New York,” Jon Bloostein, CEO and founder of Manhattan chain Heartland Brewery, tells The Post. At his Midtown beer-and-burger joints, he says he’s now charging a dollar more for several entrees, 50 cents to a dollar more on appetizers and 50 cents more on pints of beer as a direct result of the wage shift. The changes will be even more dramatic at high-end spots, he adds: “At a tablecloth restaurant, a chicken dinner with a vegetable and a side [used to go] for $26 to $28, and now it’s $32 to $34,” he says, giving general estimates.

The Min wage here just went up a couple of bucks to $15.

Everyone wants a raise now, those who were making 15 now want 17, etc. Like the ever increasing lease and material costs it's gotta come out of our rapidly diminishing profit margin. We're at the point now that any further cost increases will make the risk of continuing the business not worth it. Then everyone loses their job.

You have two choices.  Raise prices or shrink the portions.  Knowing the Lib lawmakers in Albany they will probably enact food price controls forbidding owners from raising prices.  Like rent control...only for restaurants.

Fear not, when that happens the democrats and union thugs will be screaming that you don't have the right to shutter a failing business, they will try to force business owners to stay open no matter it destroys them. Socialists the original

I wish you were kidding. I also fully expect the California legislature will somehow make it impossible to move money out of the state. Not sure how they'll do it, but they'll get around to stopping the current exodus of productive people somehow.

Here's a thread on how Massachusetts' new minimum wage law contributed to the demise of a landmark Boston restaurant. Wherever the minimum wage is increased by force of law, restaurants and other businesses are likely to go under. Women and minorities hardest hit.

Economics happens.
"The most terrifying force of death, comes from the hands of Men who wanted to be left Alone. They try, so very hard, to mind their own business and provide for themselves and those they love. These are the people who consider themselves the brightest, wisest, and most cultured people on the planet.  Don't think so?  Just ask them.  I remember a NYC Briefer who famously answered every comment with either "</snicker>" or the Emoji of a forehead slap, and nothing else.

We in flyover land were just too stoopit to ever understand the ways of a New Yorker....

Why stop at 15? They should raise it to 50/hr.

Just read the governor of PA wants to raise the state minimum wage to $12 an hour, with 25 cent increases till 2025.

What could possibly go wrong?

They will no doubt be further shocked when their taxes go further out of sight due to producers leaving in droves!

Well it's just the SOS, with the one minor difference , it would be slower and at smaller increments which allow for an easier absorption by the economy and public. Fact is it will never happen because the socialists will scream 'too little', 'too slow' and make the same job killing demands as elsewhere.

Oh, they have no intention of stopping at 15. That's what indexing is for. An unelected bureaucracy gets to decide how much the dollar has "inflated" and can unilaterally raise the wage themselves.

It' the pay off for their labor union enablers!  Virtually all union labor contracts have clauses that ensure automatic pay raises when the minimum wage goes up.

In fact I read an article the other day where some leftist pol advocated 30 dollars an hour. She couldn't explain why that would work, but who cares.....make the rich pay for it.   Until the rich leave and there are no more jobs.

Many super rich libs (Bezos, Zuckerberg, Gates, Buffet) are fairly silent about the radical leftist plans to erase their wealth.
I guess many moderate Dems believe it is just and fitting to destroy the one percent.
Well after the one percent's wealth is all taxed away and they're liquidated, there  will be  a new one percent.
At the moment they think since they're not in the top one percent, they'll be safe when the current one percent are gone.
In fact, they then will be the new one percent, and the rabble will be sharpening the guillotine for them.
It will never stop until leftists have destroyed all wealth.  Venezuela Norte....OLE!!!!!
