Romney slams Trump's character in new op-ed
By Niv Elis - 01/01/19 08:38 PM EST

Incoming Utah Senator and former GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney slammed President Trump's character on Tuesday, writing in a Washington Post op-ed that it fell short of what the country needed.

"With the nation so divided, resentful and angry, presidential leadership in qualities of character is indispensable. And it is in this province where the incumbent’s shortfall has been most glaring," Romney wrote.

Romney, who criticized Trump in the run up to the 2016 election, said the events of the past month, including the departures of Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and Chief of Staff John Kelly, marked a worrying decline for Trump's presidency.

"On balance, his conduct over the past two years, particularly his actions this month, is evidence that the president has not risen to the mantle of the office," Romney wrote.

Romney argued that Trump's "shortfall" set a poor example for America's "public character," while alienating U.S. allies.

Perhaps posters recall that Romney's old man was a prime mover and shaker
in the campaign to destroy the candidacy of Barry Goldwater in 1964.
Like his old man, Willard is a similar scumbag and leftist fraud/hustler.

Is there anything on record with Romney stating he would NOT run again?

I believe the daily attacks on Trump continue, from dems, from the media, from Mueller, from Brennan, from certain fellow Republican,s" in hopes to drive him out.

Then some, like Rominey wait in the wings, hoping they get to be the designated, dignified Republican loser. Of course there are others, too.

If anybody thinks some other Republican besides Trump has a chance of winning,  they are hereby nominated for the "most stupid Republican Award."

I don't think he would be that stupid to humiliate himself and challenge Trump in 2020.  Should Trump decide not to run, Romney would never get the GOP nomination anyways.  I'll admit, I used to think he was ok but lately he's said and done some really boneheaded things.

Stuff it, Mitt.

I agree.  Mitt has NO business criticizing anyone after he laid down for Obama.

I've lost track. Which state is Mittens "from" these days?

Looks like he wants to carry on the John McCain role of being obstreperous.

The only point to Romney’s seemingly gratuitous public shot at President Trump is to announce his 2020 presidential bid.

But is this going to be the platform on which he and Sasse and Flake and others are going to run? Is their argument really going to be “I’m just like Trump on policy but I ‘m a really nice guy.”

What Romney misses is that most Democrats don’t care how nice he is and most Republicans already thought he was a nice guy when he ran on 2012 when he was attacked by some of the same people he is now defending for being a ‘ racist who enjoyed firing people’.

I don’t know if Republicans are going to think Romney is a nice guy after this snake move though. He didn’t seem to mind Trump’s character when he was being interviewed for the Secretary of State job or wanted Trump’s endorsement for his senatorial campaign.

Here we go with Mitt Romney, but so fast! Question will be, is he a Flake?  I hope not. Would much prefer that Mitt focus on Border Security and so many other things where he can be helpful. I won big, and he didn’t. He should be happy for all Republicans. Be a TEAM player & WIN!

Thanks Utah, for being stupid enough to recycle this rodent back to DC.

He's right of course, but he could have written the same editorial about a lot of people in DC.

That seems somewhat correct, December was a troublesome month.

Some criticize Romney and others all they want but if it comes down to losing popularity and not being reelected, then what?

He went back to Utah for the Mormon vote, it looks like. I recall seeing signs for him down there just before the election.
