Is This Worse Than ’68?

by Patrick J. Buchanan

October 30, 2018

Saturday, in Pittsburgh, a Sabbath celebration at the Tree of Life synagogue became the site of the largest mass murder of Jews in U.S. history. Eleven worshippers were killed by a racist gunman.

Friday, we learned the identity of the crazed criminal who mailed pipe bombs to a dozen leaders of the Democratic Party, including Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden.

From restaurants to Capitol corridors, this campaign season we have seen ugly face-offs between leftist radicals and Republican senators.

In our unit at Fort Belvoir, they had wire mesh cages welded together inside the old arms rooms. National Guard armories were not safe from being looted. How soon we forget.

Yes,  1968 was worse.  Among other things, it was the year that jazz died as a commercial proposition in most American cities.

Anyone who was old enough to pay attention in 1968 knows that it was worse then.

Character still matters.  It always matters.

I was still a child then. It was pretty bad. I did get a baseball glove for my birthday, but the rest of the year stunk both personally and for the nation. So much political conflict that spilled over into our family, and Vietnam was a constant presence in everyone's lives, it seemed.

I lived in the wrong part of town in 1968. It was worse.

Dropped grad school, took a job, and moved.

It was the year of race riots.

That's a reasonable conclusion to draw!

The goal is to "recreate 68."

I don't think they'll succeed, because 68 was such a dark, dark year, but they're doing their best.

I was in a small Christian college then, but even in that protected environment, things were very bad.  Very dark.

I remember some years later that our then retired college President said that those years were the most difficult for the school of the 30 or so years he was President.  No one...... not even children...... were unaffected by what was going on.

It was the left that messed things up then, and they're trying to do the same now.

It's just not working as well.

The best thing I remember from '68 was that the Tigers won the World Series.    I can still recall most of the players from that team.   My dice league team - which just completed a winning surge to make it into the playoffs - is named the Tigers in their honor.

I also recall Kennedy and King getting shot,  and the race riots that burned New Haven (where I was at the time)  and Philadelphia (where I am today, and the vestiges of that destruction still remain.)

I was too young to remember much beyond my second grade class, but I would think 17000 US dead & 88000 wounded in Vietnam would make '68 worse by a longshot.

And if you were old enough to watch the news, you saw all those numbers on your TV screen every single day, while you watched parts of cities burning.

I have a baseball from the 68 Tigers World Series team.  Also a 30-year Anniversary bat signed by the same players.  I don't think Denny McClean signed either of them.

I remember '68.  My dad had just been transferred and we moved to the D.C. area.  Right in the middle of it all.  It was ugly, but I think the rhetoric, animus and polarization is even worse now than it was then.  Remember, they were rioting in '68, now the same people are steadily dismantling and destroying what is left of the U. S.  It may not look as violent, but has much more impact.

Bah! The 91st Engineering Battalion was ready to save you. We were always on some level of alert in case there was serious trouble in D.C.

Fort Belvoir. Just a hop, a skip and a Fairfax away.

I guess we got picked because we were available for any duty and had proximity.

I remember where that was.  Interesting times, wasn't it?

Yes. We weren't allowed to wear 'combat patches' because that could cause friction with civilians.

Or the fatigues. But you wouldn't know if we'd been in Vietnam.

No, I wouldn't have.  But, I didn't really have conversations with grown men much back then.
