Collins: Trump's Remarks About Ford Were 'Just Plain Wrong'

Sen. Susan Collins (R., Maine), one of the crucial Republican swing votes on Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination, told CNN that President Trump’s comments mocking Dr. Ford at a rally Tuesday night were “just plain wrong.” She didn't comment on whether the remarks would affect how she ultimately votes.

Democrats also condemned Mr. Trump’s comments. “He's dividing us into tribes, and last night was the most basic tribe of all: men and women,” Sen. Angus King of Maine, an Independent who caucuses with the Democrats, said on CNN.

One of Dr. Ford’s lawyers, Michael Bromwich, tweeted that Mr. Trump’s comments were “a vicious, vile and soulless attack.”

Earlier, another Republican swing vote, Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona, said he found the comments "kind of appalling."

Maybe Collins should have said she wishes Trump would refrain from commenting at all, but his comments were just plain right.

And democrats complaining about Trump dividing the country into tribes is just plain hilarious. They wouldn't even be a political party if they weren't able to stoke tribal resentments. They've been doing it since Johnson.

Collins always was a "No"

I'm sick and tired of having to bend over backwards for the "Evil Three".....we need a bigger majority to make them irrelevant.

Since when did we all become so frightened of telling the truth?

He can tell the truth -- which I think Trump SHOULD have done -- without mocking her and alienating people who might otherwise have heard the message.

The only people who were alienated were already on her side.

Collins, Heitkamp, Manchin, and Murkowski are at least ostensibly on the fence.

No, they should not.  If you'll note, in my original comment I said that Trump SHOULD have talked about this.  However, there is no reason why he could not have done so like an adult instead of publicly mocking Ford.

The only people his comments would offend are those with their minds already made up. There is NO reason a person not already invested in one side or the other would be offended.

On the other hand, an undecided person would agree that Trump has a very good point. The truth resonates.

Two or three are very vulnerable. This is one of the main reasons the rats want the vote held AFTER the midterms.

The only people who get upset at what Trump says are the people who are ALWAYS upset at what Trump says.

Everybody knows what Trump is now.

I beg to differ, as I am convinced that Ford is lying but I also am convinced that Trump behaved very poorly -- not in WHAT he said, but in HOW he said it.  His message was distasteful because of the delivery.

Don’t waste your bandwidth. Trump is, and will always be a bully. Destroying the credibility of “Dr.” Ford should have been delegated to underlings.

The problem with politics these days.  You are either all in or you must be a liberal attacking GOP and Trump.  You don't have to explain yourself because you expect your president to act like a man instead of a child.  Many people like it.  I don't.  That's childish.  You are right he very well could have pointed out the facts without the childish mocking.  I think he looks like a giant buffoon.  I guess people can relate to their own inner child?  It just doesn't fit my view of professional or respectable.

Furthermore guess who else didn't like it?  Lindsey Graham.

For all the people hanging on every word from Lindsey Graham lately hang on this.  Is he Trumps boy and mouthpiece, or is he liberal because he isn't all in?

I was also wondering?............Is Trump a Christian or isn't he?  This isn't Christian behavior.

I am certain Senator Collins office phones, email, and regular mail is getting bombarded by angry constituents who want to know why predator Trump is mocking a woman who claims she was molested, and before an FBI investigation finishes and a Senate confirmation vote.  Because of this she spoke against President Trump.  Now her office phones, email, and regular mail is getting bombarded by angry constituents who want her shut up and take it.  I can't imagine why she'd want to endure this for another 2 years.  Don't be surprised if she announces her retirement after the GOP loses the governors seat in Nov.
