Actually where judges are concerned it goes back to Reagan and the way they treated Judge Bork.  Then they really ramped it up with Justice Thomas...and every Justice nominated by a Republican since.

I vaguely remember Justice Thomas' confirmation, but I need to go back to read about Bork.  I was too young to follow what happened, but I remember my parents were upset.  I remember something about a country club?

When the Dems learned Reagan was going to nominate Bork...Ted Kennedy went to the Senate floor and delivered what can best be described as a blatant character assanation on Judge Bork.

The media leaked his video rental history and did the 80’s version of what is happening to Judge Kavanaugh. The incident led to the enactment of the 1988 Video Privacy Protection Act.

People for the American Way had Gregory Peck voice commercials slamming Judge Bork. And Joe Biden completely lies about Judge Bork’s record on the bench.

I'll be honest.  I was sexually harassed at work, and a gynecologist once came on to me..well, at the worst time.  That's all I'll say.  Yeah, it freaked me out.  But I'm getting to where I'm sick of these women running around grabbing arms and wailing, "You don't know what it's like!  Validate my feelings!"
