Federal agents on Monday searched the office, home and Manhattan hotel room of President Donald Trump’s longtime lawyer, Michael Cohen, seizing communications between the lawyer and his clients that cover topics including payments to the former porn actress known as Stormy Daniels, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The searches were executed at the direction of the Manhattan U.S. attorney’s office, which has opened an investigation that is being coordinated with the office of special counsel Robert Mueller, this person said.

Steve Ryan, a lawyer for Mr. Cohen, in a statement Monday confirmed the search. “Today the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York executed a series of search warrants and seized the privileged communications between my client, Michael Cohen, and his clients,” Mr. Ryan said. “I have been advised by federal prosecutors that the New York action is, in part, a referral by the Office of Special Counsel, Robert Mueller.”

The special counsel has a broad mandate from the Justice Department to investigate any matters he comes across in the course of his investigation of whether Trump associates colluded with Russia’s efforts to interfere in the 2016 U.S. election, no matter how tangential. Mr. Trump has repeatedly denied any collusion, and Moscow has denied meddling in the election.

The mandate orders Mr. Mueller to consult with Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein if he concludes that “additional jurisdiction” is necessary to fully investigate matters he encounters. Mr. Rosenstein then determines whether to include those matters in the special counsel’s jurisdiction or “assign them elsewhere.”

The execution of the search by the Manhattan U.S. attorney’s office indicates Mr. Rosenstein has opted to refer the Stormy Daniels matter to that office, rather than broadening Mr. Mueller’s jurisdiction to include it.

Yes, it does.  Mueller is still looking into Cohen, but it's concerned with his travel abroad and possible outreach to people who could assist with getting a Trump building in Moscow.
