So, are we allowed to call him Paddy instead of 'Beto'?

Heck yeah.  The man has more blarney in him than the Lucky Charms leprechaun.

And he shall henceforth be referred to solely as Paddy O'Rourke by me!

I like it too.

It's perfect!  Can we give the originator a 4-leave clover award?

Sí. Thus my avatar.

Not to be critical but I cannot make out your avatar.  It looks vaguely like a knight.

Enh, this is a continuation of your and my conversation on the other thread and last night.  I thought it was a border thing, but you said not in South Texas.  So I guess it's more El Paso.  Maybe it's more the families who've been there for several generations.  Almost everyone I knew growing up had a Spanish nickname.  Most people speak at least some Spanish -- you study it from K12, even if you don't have family who speak it.  Beto is fluent, like a lot of people in El Paso.  And he was called Beto even when he was in high school.

Sorry I'm being grumpy ;(.  But it's equally dumb to make fun of "Ted" and "Beto".

I don't know why this bugs me, but I get annoyed when people just don't get El Paso and the mixed culture there.

Yeah, I hear you.  When I was with the Union our region covered several Southwestern and Southern states and the El Paso local was definitely the red-headed step child.  It is a place unto itself.  I kinda liked the President of the local there but he was definitely ignored at meetings.  Looking back, I see how wrong it was but ...

I was born in El Paso... I can remember being chased down the alley by rock throwing "Latinos" screaming gringo... I was probably in first grade...

I don't have fond memories of El Paso.
At least you didn't fall in love with a Mexican girl. At least as far as I know, since, well, you're still alive.

Any mention of El Paso, and I'm all running out to the badlands of New Mexico.

This is such a great photo!  Where did you find it?  Is she your ancestor?

If it helps, I know the names of a couple of great restaurants in Las Cruces.

Here's another tip: if you're looking for the best Mexican food, stop at any dive along Alameda St. OTOH, the larger restaurants such as Carlos & Mickey's, and Forti's, are two that I fondly remember from my 15 years in El Paso.

No relation. I believe it's in some WV archives, as she is identified as from Helvetia, WV, a tiny Swiss-settled town in the mountains of Randolph County (near where some of my relatives live).

On my left, I see the Sunland Park Race Track. About a mile from there is an actual Rosa's Cantina.

@Night Hides Not Did you ever get to go to Nellie's in Las Cruces?  Excellent gorditas!  And Chope's outside Mesilla?  Also Linda's Jet by the EP airport.  The food in the whole area is really the only thing I miss.
