Trump motorcade driver stopped after gun found in his possession
Washington Times, Feb 19, 2018, Dave Boyer

The driver of a vehicle for President Trump’s motorcade was detained briefly Monday after security agents found a gun in his baggage, the Secret Service said.

The gun was discovered during a security screening of the vehicle in a parking lot across the street from Mar-a-Lago, the president’s private club in Palm Beach, Florida.

The man, who was not identified, told authorities that he forgot to leave the personal firearm in his personal vehicle before entering the van that was to be part of Mr. Trump’s motorcade, according to pool reporter Jordan Fabian of The Hill.

The driver was scheduled to be operating one of the press vans. The Secret Service said the man was a staff-contracted driver, and that a background check determined that he owns the gun legally.

I don't own a gun, so this is a serious question:  Is it possible, especially with guns in the news 24/7 and driving in a Presidential motorcade, to forget you have a gun with you?

It’s possible, but irresponsible. He can say goodbye to his contract position.
I disagree.  Circle gets the square.

It actually happens quite a lot at an airport, especially if carried in a duffel or other "hand" bag.

If you carry it all the time, it just becomes second nature.  I go in and out of refinery/ chem plants all the time so I often have to leave it away.

Added thought:

For me it was an issue with a pocket knife when I traveled a lot.  I carry one everywhere.  I could not seem to ever remember to leave it out when headed to the airport.

At one time I found this cheap stainless steel pocket knife for a dollar.  I bought a couple dozen to be able to throw them away at the airport for when I forgot to leave it at home.  I still have 2 or 3 of those left.

Yes I used different bags for guns so I don't have this problem.   If you're not wearing it it's very easy to forget.

All Drivers In Trump Motorcade Replaced After One Found With Gun In Bag
Daily Wire, Feb 19, 2018, Joseph Curl

Agents with the Secret Service's presidential protection unit have detained a driver of a vehicle in President Trump’s motorcade after they found a gun in his baggage.

Before the motorcade was allowed to depart, all drivers were replaced, according to a report from a journalist with the president in Mar-a-Lago, Trump's hotel in Palm Beach, Florida.

Here's an excerpt from the "pool report" by Jordan Fabian of The Hill. Pool reports are written by one member of the press and dispatched to all other journalists who cover the White House but were not on hand.

<snip>

When on club grounds, another van grazed a Secret Service vehicle in the parking lot. Damage to vehicles appeared to be very minor and no one was hurt.

Even when you're driving in the motorcade President of the United States?  Were there no instructions given to the drivers?

Hopefully the Service has learned something here ... and more in-depth screenings will be the norm.

I would prefer that they include only decorated Marines in their pool for vetting of drivers.  (The USMC is reportedly doing a lot of security work for the POTUS.)

On President's day, I rule out nothing.  I'm certainly not into JFK conspiracies but it certainly looks like the Secret Service were lax in their duties on Nov. 22, 1963.

Yes. Not so much that you have it, but more that you shouldn't have it where you are.

That's right. I quite literally always have several knives on me as a matter of course... A big folder, a penknife, and a multitool for starters...  They are off-loaded every night into my ballcap, along with everything else I have on me, and loaded back on every morning as part of getting dressed.

Of course, I don't consider them weapons... They're just tools.
But I don't fly anymore because of the restriction.
