McConnell promises vote on ending shutdown by 1 a.m. Monday

Day One of a government shutdown, filled with increasingly angry finger pointing from both Democrats and Republicans, appeared to produce little Saturday in terms of a potential solution for the impasse on how to fund the government.

But Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell insisted that a vote to break a Democratic filibuster on a short-term spending bill to reopen the government would happen by 1 a.m. Monday.

"I asked for consent to move up a vote on this bipartisan solution and end this craziness. The Democrats objected," McConnell said late Saturday, Roll Call reported. "That won't work forever. If they continue to object, we cannot proceed to a cloture vote until 1 a.m. Monday.

"But I assure you," McConnell added, "we will have the vote at 1 a.m. Monday, unless there is a desire to have it sooner."

Hey, I just watched speeches on the Senate floor by McConnell and then by Schumer.

I liked McConnell a lot better but being better than Schumer is not that high a bar.

Schumer had been shying away from bringing DACA into this but he did this morning. And he referred to "the children."

Just looked it up. The current age of DACA recipients ranges from 16 to 35 years old.

There are no children involved.

McConnell threatened cloture ... not sure what that would do except get Schumer off the Senate floore.

I'm pretty sure it will pass for two reasons.

1. Schumer realizes that he stepped in a big pile of dog poop with this stunt, and he wants a way out.

2. The whole goal of this had nothing to do with DACA. It was about shutting down the government on Trump's anniversary. Since that has passed there is no need for the shutdown anymore. And the stunt didn't work anyway. The Dems wanted to say that all Trump has achieved in a year is to shutdown the government. But nobody bought it. It went over like lead balloon.

Senate to vote Monday on plan to reopen government

The Senate will vote at noon Monday on a bill to reopen the government through Feb. 8, though passage is not assured. Senate leaders Mitch McConnell and Chuck Schumer are continuing to negotiate on a deal to reopen the government and begin legislative work on protecting some young immigrants, but Schumer said "we have yet to reach a path forward."

They should take free education they received here and go home to get a job. Unemployment in Mexico is lower than in America.

McConnell just said in the senate, a closure vote will happen at 12 noon. Right now, it is 12:20 am, 1-22-2018, in Washington.

After a closure vote, if that passes, it closes debate and a vote will happen to reopen govn. with whatever budget extension they try to pass.
