News that the Justice Department is reshuffling resources in its civil rights division to go after colleges' affirmative action policies ignited a firestorm Wednesday – with civil rights groups and Obama education officials quickly condemning the move, though it's unclear what exactly the DOJ is planning.

Late Tuesday, The New York Times obtained an internal DOJ job announcement that sought lawyers interested in a project on “investigations and possible litigation related to intentional race-based discrimination in college and university admissions.”

While the notice doesn’t come right out and say which races and ethnicities are considered by the Trump administration as “at risk” for discrimination, the reported implication was that Jeff Sessions’ DOJ could go after affirmative action policies.

Those programs are meant to diversify campuses but the Times reported that the new effort could be used to sue universities over admissions that allegedly go too far and discriminate against white and Asian applicants.

John King, former education secretary under President Obama, said he was “deeply disheartened” by the Trump administration’s “hard line against efforts to increase campus diversity rather than focusing on addressing the persistent opportunity gaps facing students of color and low-income students.”

Pointless.

The Supreme court ruled in 2014 that Michigan could ban Affirmative action in college admissions. All that's required is for individual states to do so.

U.S. Supreme Court upholds Michigan's ban on affirmative action in college admissions

The U.S. Supreme Court upheld Michigan's controversial ban on affirmative action in public college admissions in a divided opinion released Tuesday morning, preserving a law that University of Michigan officials have said contributed to dwindling minority enrollment at the state's flagship college.

The high court's decision is a blow to diversity efforts at the U-M in Ann Arbor, which has come under fire for low minority enrollment.

Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote the majority opinion, Justice Sonia Sotomayor authored the dissenting opinion. The court's decision is divided 6-2, with justice Elena Kagan recusing herself from the case; she was the U.S. solicitor general when the case was before the lower courts.

I've always looked at Affirmative Action as being some of the most unfair and racist policies ever enacted against minorities.

Nothing should insult a minority community more than telling even the brightest among them that they'll never get anywhere or be anything without the Government's help.

"Affirmative Action" is one of several systemic programs in academe that have one primary objective: patronage for Democrats.  At my university we have a "vice president of diversity," an office of social equity, an LGBT office, a womens center, and an office serving students with learning disabilities.  All of these people continually pass memos around to the other administrators, reminding everyone of the university's "commitment" to LGBT, minorities or whatever their particular protected minority group happens to be, so that we can all develop preferential policies for each of them.

Personally, I'd love to see it all come to an end, and just go back to protecting everyone's rights without regard to group identity.  Unless, of course, they come up with an office for discriminatory practices against fat, bald males.  That I would support wholeheartedly.
