At least five dead after military plane crashes in Mississippi
NY Daily News, Jul 10, 2017

At least five people are dead after a military transport plane crashed in Mississippi, according to reports.

The plane came down early Monday evening, sending plumes of black smoke billowing into the air above a soybean field near Moorhead, northwest of Jackson.

Sheriff Ricky Banks told the Clarion-Ledger that at least five people had died on the aircraft, believed to be carrying nine.

The Marine Corps posted on Twitter Monday evening that the plane was a K-130, a tanker version of C-130 transport planes that is used for refueling in-air.

The FBI reportedly has joined local and state agencies to investigate what caused a U.S. military plane to corkscrew out of the sky and into a Mississippi field on Monday, killing at least 16.

A KC-130, used as a refueling tanker, "experienced a mishap" when it spiraled down about 4 p.m. into a soybean field, about 85 miles north of Jackson, the Marine Corps said. The aircraft's debris scattered in a radius of about 5 miles.

Leflore County Sheriff Ricky Banks told The Associated Press that officials were continuing to look for possible survivors. Banks earlier told the Greenwood Commonwealth 16 people were believed to be on board, but would not confirm that information to The Associated Press.

"We're still searching the area," Banks said. "It's hard to find bodies in the dark."

The Marine Corps said it operated the plane but has provided no information on where the flight originated or where it was going.

Alan Hammons, an official at Greenwood Airport, told WNCN that the aircraft suffered a "structural failure" at 20,000 feet. The Clarion Ledger reported that the plane departed from Naval Support Activity Mid-South Base in Millington, Tenn.

An intense fire, fed by jet fuel, hampered firefighters, causing them to turn to unmanned devices in an attempt to control the flames, authorities said. There were several high-intensity explosions.

Aerial pictures taken by WLBT-TV showed the skeleton of the plane burning, producing plumes of black smoke visible for miles across the flat landscape of the delta.

The FBI on Tuesday continued to investigate the deaths of 15 Marines and one Navy Corpsman who were killed when their U.S. military plane spiraled out of the sky and into a Mississippi field on Monday.

A KC-130, used as a refueling tanker, "experienced a mishap" when it corkscrewed into a soybean field about 4 p.m. Monday at a location around 85 miles north of Jackson, the Marine Corps said. The aircraft's debris scattered in a radius of nearly 5 miles.

The Marine Corps said in a statement on Tuesday 15 Marines and a Navy Corpsman were aboard the aircraft and killed in the crash. Their bodies were recovered late Monday, Leflore County Emergency Management Agency Director Frank Randle told reporters. A witness said some bodies were found more than a mile from the crash. The identities of the people killed have not been released.

Equipment that included "various arms ammunition and personal weapons" were also on the aircraft.

Andy Jones, who works on his family's catfish farm nearby, said he heard a boom and looked up to see the plane "spinning" downward with one engine smoking.

"You looked up and you saw the plane twirling around," he said. "It was spinning down."

Jones said the plane hit the ground behind some trees in the soybean field, and by the time he and others reached the crash site, fires were burning too intensely to approach the wreckage. The force of the crash nearly flattened the plane, Jones said.

Beans are about waist-high, and there wasn't much sticking out above the beans," he said. "It was one of the worst fires you can imagine."

Jones added the fire was punctuated by the pops of small explosions.

Why the FBI ??  Do they suspect something which the Marines and/or Navy cannot investigate?

Yeah I thought that was kinda odd when I read it too.  Usually NCIS would be the lead...but it seems the FBI has taken over.  Hopefully it's not what everyone thinks when they read that headline.

Spiraling down with one engine smoking.

We had a twin engine Canadair STOL turboprop being tested out of PAX River lose an engine over a construction site I was working on in 1970. The engine had a catastrophic failure, scattering parts for a couple miles (not nearly at 20,000 ft., more like 4,000). The gearbox fragmented, and it gave out a puff of smoke out of the starboard engine, with the crump heard just a moment later. The crew exited the aircraft successfully, which crashed in a nearby tobacco field.

I would think the C-130 would be able to fly on 3, but if they had a similar failure, a lot depends on where the fragments went and what damage they did, especially considering this was a tanker aircraft. This could be a mechanical failure, and not sabotage.

As sad as it is either way...I'm hoping it was mechanical failure.

Six MARSOC Marine Raiders among the 16 dead after KC-130 plane crash in Mississippi
The aircraft crashed over a soybean field on Monday night and debris scattered over a three-mile diameter

by Melissa Leon · July 11, 2017

Six Marines and one Navy sailor from Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC) are among the 16 deceased service members following a Marine Corps KC-130 crash over a soybean field in Mississippi on Monday.

The aircraft was transporting the service members and their “associated equipment for routine small unit pre-deployment training at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, [Arizona],” according to a press release. “All seven were from the Camp Lejeune-based 2nd Marine Raider Battalion.”

Their identities are being withheld until notification of next of kin. The FBI is investigating the crash.

Not to joke but a Jagman and Gibbs type team should have the lead.
