Georgia special election hurtles toward nail-biting finish

Polls in the most expensive House race in history suggest it's too close to call.

As the most expensive House race in history rushes toward the finish line Tuesday, the latest public polls are unanimous: The Georgia special election between Democrat Jon Ossoff and Republican Karen Handel is too close to call.

The race for the suburban Atlanta seat, closely watched for clues about the shape of the 2018 midterm elections, appears to be within a few percentage points — with perhaps the slightest edge to Ossoff, the 30-year-old Democrat seeking to wrest away a traditionally Republican seat in the first major election of Donald Trump’s presidency.

The media will keep looking for that special election that 'forecasts the 2018 midterms' until they find one with an  outcome they like.

There, fixed it.
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.

-Dwight Eisenhower-

Maybe it wouldn't be so close if the Pubs actually did what they promised they would do for 7 long years.

I know I won't go to the polls for them if they won't keep their promises.

I stopped voting for Tom Price ten years ago.

You were ahead of the curve.

I've stuck with the Pubs. I didn't vote for Pres. Trump, but I did back the conservative Pubs with donations and the few on my ballot. I won't in the future if they don't follow through on their promises. I don't believe they are going to repeal obamacare and that's the final straw. obamacare decimated my business, my former employees, and transformed how I take care of my family's medical needs.

Right now it looks to me like the socialists will win. obamacare will be "tweaked". The tax code will not be changed to promote savings and investment. The fed govt will continue to try to run my life and the cultural rot will grow. If the Pubs really wanted to change any of this they would have done so by now.

The democrats have put all their hopes and a lot of their money on this race, hoping to prove that they are coming back.

Wasn't Obama in power for the last 8 years?

They will come back. Not because of anything the represent, but because the Pubs didn't have the courage to do what they promised. The millennials have been indoctrinated with collectivism and "tolerance". They have never seen a free economy, or market solutions put into action to fix problems. They are the "useful idiots" who believe every answer comes from govt. So the Rats will continue to lie and in time enough millennials, illegals, new immigrants and whatever other group the Rats can make dependent on govt will vote for them and the Pubs will be a minority party again. It won't happen all at once but it will happen, if for no other reason than the Pubs didn't believe in the alternative and put it into place.

And during those 8 long years the Pubs said give us the House, the Senate the Presidency and we will undo this mess. Now after they've gotten everything they asked for they won't repeal obamacare. The wont change the tax code to promote savings and investment. They won't control our borders. They won't defund planned parenthood. They will tell us they just don't have enough votes.

@mystery-ak

It is a historical truth that in a special election, more Republicans show up than Democrats.  Republicans will show up to vote in a special election for best telephone picture of the month, they are that dedicated to vote.  We always knew we had the advantage in a special election.

Not this time, and not in this district.  Conservatives here are sick and tired of being lied to and taken for granted.  Dedication must be earned.

On the other side, there is quite a bit of dedication.  Even more, there is quite a bit of hard work.  Ossoff people come to my door and call my house frequently.  Yes, a live person calls, not some robo-call from the RNC.  And since the original election, the Democrats have been able to register thousands of new voters.

This is a very close race.  Don't kid yourself.  And if the Dems win, it will be because they earned it.

Maybe they will.  We need to get some more conservatives in in the 2018 elections.  At least we have a chance now which wouldn't have been the case if Hillary had been elected.

When do you predict they will decide to begin that clean-up process?  When can we expect to see that repeal bill that has already passed multiple times under Obama to be re-introduced?

I don't know.  I wish they would get on with it.

What I do know is that some people sound like they want the Georgia democrat to win because they are mad at the Republicans.

That will not help our cause.

It can be fixed in 6 minutes... if the right chief executive came along and immediately fired the entire executive department payroll.

I am not hearing that from anyone.  But I am hearing people being mad at the Republicans for making this race winnable for the Democrats because of their own broken promises.

That will not help our cause.

What hurts our cause is Republicans trying to be Democrats, just like with this Obamacare-lite bill that passed the House.

Sounds like something Ted Cruz would do.

Well, dang.  I guess I'm reading impaired.  I inferred that very thing from your own post wherein you bragged about what a good job the democrats were doing and how the Republicans didn't deserve to win because everyone you know is disappointed in them.

Even Ted Cruz couldn't fix this mess in 6 minutes or even 6 months.  You're indulging in fantasy thinking.  No CIC could fire everyone.  You're just venting and looking foolish.

Correct.

There is nothing in that post in any way, shape, or form that could be construed as me saying I wanted the Democrats to win.  I don't.  My vote for Handel has already been cast.

But in the event Handel loses, the Republicans have only themselves to blame.  Heck, they couldn't even bother to challenge a ruling by a Federal judge that re-opened voter registration in violation of state law.  Republicans have become complacent and lazy.  And dishonest.  And there is no way I am excusing that simply because vile Democrats are on the other side.
