President Trump changes stance on 4 campaign positions in just 1 day

 Over the course of just one day, President Trump declared different positions than he took during the campaign on four issues.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal and at a press conference on Wednesday, President Trump declared that China is not a currency manipulator, entertained the possibility of re-appointing Janet Yellen as chair of the Federal Reserve, asserted that NATO is a relevant alliance and expressed a favorable view of the Export-Import Bank.

On Thursday, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer portrayed the shifts as reactions to changing circumstances rather than an ideological modification.

"If you look at what's happened, it's those entities or individuals, in some cases, or issues evolving towards the president's position," said Spicer.

Every one of those positions represents a departure from stances Trump took as a presidential candidate.

5-6 in one day. Although to be fair, they may not be counting some decisions he made before yesterday that were just reported then.

1. Reducing the debt. 2. Labeling China a currency manipulator. 3. Federal Reserve interest rate policy. 3. NATO. 4. Export/Import Bank. 5. Trade Policy. 6. Trade deal with China.

I agree - my optimism about the new President continues to grow. 

As for conservative goals, well,  the President will sign GOP legislation.  So it will be up to conservatives and other members of the GOP coalition in Congress to deliver such legislation.   Health care reform, tax reform, regulatory reform,  tort reform - it is within our grasp if we can unite our coalition.     

More than ever,  the lesson of the doomed AHCA looms large - we must not let the perfect become the enemy of the good.

Let's not forget the leverage the President has to assemble a coalition that includes Democrats.   That ought to focus the minds of the GOP coalition to compromise within itself sufficiently to stay united.    I can easily see healthcare or tax reform being coupled with an infrastructure bill, for example,  that can gain enough Dem support so that the President can ignore the Freedom Caucus.

Hillary gone - check.  Conservative justice - check.  Anything else positive is icing on the cake. Perhaps we need to take a step back, take a breather and realize that he could reverse course again ... he's just getting warmed up.  We have 535 members of Congress and now is the time to hold their feet to the fire for once! They are up for re-election in 2018. Phone calls, e-mails and a visit to their office when in town does have some impact.
