PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Just one day after hundreds of gravestones were found vandalized at a Jewish cemetery in Philadelphia, Jewish community centers in Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania were evacuated on Monday.

All the threats have been unfounded at this point. Federal authorities are now investigating.

The Jewish Federation of South Jersey tweeted: “The Federation had been safely evacuated. Cherry Hill Twp police have arrived. We will update you with more information as soon as possible.”

Several hours later, Cherry Hill Police said the threat was unfounded.

New Castle County Police say that Siegel JCC in Wilmington, Delaware, was also evacuated as police investigated. Authorities found no evidence of explosives at the Wilmington community center and it has since been reoccupied.  . . .

NEW YORK – In light of a new rash of bomb threats called into Jewish community centers and Jewish day schools today, a statement from David Posner, director of strategic performance at JCC Association of North America, follows.

“Anti-Semitism of this nature should not and must not be allowed to endure in our communities. The Justice Department, Homeland Security, the FBI, and the White House, alongside Congress and local officials, must speak out – and speak out forcefully – against this scourge of anti-Semitism impacting communities across the country.

“Actions speak louder than words. Members of our community must see swift and concerted action from federal officials to identify and capture the perpetrator or perpetrators who are trying to instill anxiety and fear in our communities.

“We remain grateful to local law enforcement who continue to serve our communities and ensure that our JCCs and schools remain safe and open for business as the vital community institutions they are.”

As this is an evolving situation, the list of impacted community institutions will be updated as more information becomes available. Today, bomb threats were called into schools and/or JCCs in Alabama, Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Virginia. Many affected institutions have already been declared clear and have returned to regular operations. All previous bomb threats to JCCs this year were determined to be hoaxes.

 Hoax bomb threat at Jewish center forces evacuation

A hoax bomb threat was made to a Jewish community center in University City Monday afternoon, one of at least 21 Jewish facilities targeted in a wave of fake threats nationwide, officials said.

San Diego police were called about 4:30 p.m. after the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center received the threat over the phone, police Officer John Buttle said.

Executive Director Michael Cohen said empoyees and pre-schoolers were safely evacuated while police searched the Executive Drive building for anything suspicious. Children and staff were ushered to La Jolla Country Day School across the street.

Parents were told in an email alert that pre-schoolers could be picked up at the La Jolla Country Day.

After a two-hour sweep with bomb-sniffing dogs, police gave the all-clear.

Elsewhere, other Jewish centers and schools were targeted in at least 12 other states, according to officials with the JCC Association of North America. Monday marked the fifth wave of fake threats at Jewish facilities in the U.S. since the beginning of the year, bringing the total to 90 threats at 73 centers in 30 states and Canada, officials said.

The series includes hoaxes on Jan. 9, Jan. 18, Jan. 31 and Feb. 21.

David Posner, a security director of the JCC Association, issued a statement, saying federal officials must condemn the wave of threats — and act against them.

“Actions speak louder than words,” he said in a statement. “Members of our community must see swift and concerted action from federal officials to identify and capture the perpetrator or perpetrators who are trying to instill anxiety and fear in our communities.”

Last month, an FBI spokeswoman in San Diego said the FBI and the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division were investigating the threats in San Diego and across the U.S.

All was fine with the family plot. This cemetery is aware of what is going on and they are placing cameras around in strategic locations.

Our family plot has sunken in the ground tomb stones, but my poor dad just has a marker, he hasn't got a tomb stone until June. I was petrified about that, but assured the only way they could get to him was with a back hoe.

Never the less, I feel better now I checked on him. I miss my grandparents and aunts and uncles but I really miss my dad.

The newer part of the cemetery has above ground tomb stones and mausoleums.

(CNN)Scary, alarming, disheartening, unprecedented.  Those are just a few of the adjectives used to describe the recent widespread spate of bomb threats that have targeted Jewish community centers and schools in 33 states in the United States and two provinces in Canada.

The threats have reached such a crescendo that President Donald Trump will use his speech to Congress on Tuesday night to address the issue, an administration official told CNN.

Law enforcement officials believe many of the threatening calls have originated overseas. So far, none of the threats have been carried out. But the lack of destruction has not made them any less chaotic or anxiety-inducing.

"This is the first time in the 60-plus years of our organization we have had a bomb threat called in. And now we've had three bomb threats this year," said the CEO of a JCC in the Northeast who wished to remain anonymous for fear of copycats targeting his center. Juan Thompson, 31, was arrested in St. Louis by the FBI for making at least eight bomb threats and the cyberstalking of an ex-girlfriend. Thompson was a former reporter for The Intercept, and was fired after it was discovered that he made up sources and stories, including one about Charleston shooter Dylann Roof.

The criminal complaint states that threats made to the Jewish establishments across the country by Thompson were under his name and the name of his ex-girlfriend, and occurred after the relationship ended. The threats were made by both email and phone calls.

The FBI arrested a 31-year-old Missouri man Friday and charged him in connection with a wave of bomb threats against Jewish community centers as part of a bizarre cyberstalking scheme to retaliate against a former girlfriend, federal prosecutors allege.

Juan Thompson, who was picked up in St. Louis, is accused of making at least eight bomb threats against Jewish institutions in New York, including the Anti-Defamation League, and across the country, in the name of a woman described in court documents as a "former romantic interest.''

Some 100 incidents of bomb threats have been reported at 81 Jewish Community Centers in 33 states already this year, according to the Jewish Community Center Association.

The president condemned the threats during his address to Congress, but he reportedly said earlier that day, “sometimes it’s the reverse, to make people — or to make others — look bad.”
