War In Europe: Finland Wants Putin And Trump To Meet Amid Various Allegations Over Russian Misconduct

With questions swirling about the United States’ relationship with Russia, Finland has offered to organize the first meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Putin is ready to meet Trump, said Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov over the weekend.

"We are ready to organize this meeting at the Arctic Council summit if the political situation is conducive to it," Finnish Prime Minister Juha Sipila said Monday. Finland took over as the chair of the Arctic Council in May last year. The Council is an intergovernmental organization between Nordic countries, Russia, the U.S. and Canada. This is Finland’s second time to suggest a meeting between the two world leaders after Finnish officials originally offered to organize a meeting in December.

Historically, Finland has remained militarily neutral since World War II. But in the past year, with tensions between western European countries and Russia tightening, Finland’s role on the world stage has been in flux. Finland and Sweden joined leaders of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization last summer for a summit in Poland, but neither country has made moves to join NATO. Putin suggested the Kremlin might retaliate and move Russian troops closer to Finland if the Nordic country decided to join.

Ummm clueless table for one...

In recent days, Trump has repeatedly called NATO obsolete, saying it should be restructured. He has complained that the United States is paying too large a share of the organization’s costs. And, when pressed, he has said that if changes aren’t made if he is president, he might consider pulling the U.S. out of NATO.

In a March 30, 2016, town hall event in Green Bay (where Trump said women who have abortions should be punished), moderator Chris Matthews twice tried to clarify with if Trump, as president, would "walk" if he couldn’t negotiate desired changes in NATO.

"If we have to walk, we have to walk," Trump said.

I guess Trump wasn't talking about abandoning NATO either when he said this:

Donald Trump, in a New York Times interview published Thursday, outlined a sharp break in US foreign policy tradition, suggesting the US wouldn't defend NATO allies like the Baltic states against Russian aggression if they haven't "fulfilled their obligation to us."

Trump has repeatedly made the case that most of NATO's 28-member countries are not making the requisite financial contributions for their common defense, and he's said in the past that "the US must be prepared to let these countries defend themselves."

And then there's this...

NATO, which Trump has called "obsolete," irrelevant, expensive and unfair, was first created by the U.S. in 1949 so that each member nation could collectively protect one another from the former Soviet Union, of which Russia was a part. Trump spoke of bringing NATO into the 21st Century to better address global terrorism.  And he spoke of NATO members paying their fair share.

They were.  But Putin has been talking about their "illegal" secession from Russia in 1917...and after what he's done with the Crimea and Ukraine...it has Finland very nervous that they are next on the Putin takeover parade.

Speaking to the Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet, Mr Illarionov warned that Russia will argue that the granting of independence to Finland in 1917 was an act of “treason against national interests”.

“Putin’s view is that he protects what belongs to him and his predecessors,” Mr Illarionov said.

“Parts of Georgia, Ukraine, Belarus, the Baltic States and Finland are states where Putin claims to have ownership.

This leads to perpetual internal strife which Russia is now exploiting by claiming that they're just looking out for poor oppressed ethnic Russians. At the end of WWII Russia cleansed eastern Europe of Germans only to replace them with Russians.

What Russia did...starting with Stalin...was to move ethnic Russians into thei occupied SSR's in order to spread the influence of Russian culture...history...language etc. and try to erase the original culture of the SSR's.


Putin is playing on that now saying that where ever ethnic Russians are he has the right to come in and defend and or liberate them...without mentioning they weren't originally from the areas he seeks to reclaim.

That was his excuse with Osstensia (SP)...the Crimea...where the myth that the Tartars were NAZI sympathizers permeates even today in the West with Putin defenders...and in the Ukraine.

And he's only encouraged to continue with Trump taking about waking away from NATO.
