On Tuesday Americans go to the polls to choose a new president. The likely winner will be Hillary Clinton but don’t be shocked if Donald Trump pulls off the upset of all upsets.

And boy-oh-boy will people be upset!

Either way people will be upset.

After nearly two years of endless campaigning this election cycle is finally grinding to an end and not one second too soon. But the end of the 2016 election is only the end of the beginning. The months ahead promise to be every bit as ugly as the months we have just endured.

Should Hillary Clinton be our next president her multitude of ethical lapses will immediately jump from Trump partisans shouting, “lock her up” at rallies to members of Congress issuing subpoenas.

Should Donald Trump turn out to be the ultimate November surprise he faces at least one court date: A late November trial for fraud in the Trump University case.

Yes, it’s that ugly.

How did we get here?

In the age of the “like” button everything – including our tuna salad sandwiches – panders for approval. It’s not enough to simply have an opinion, we have to have absolute opinions, no shades of gray allowed. Moderation is weakness. Compromise is heresy.
