Trump, Pence to tour flood damage in Louisiana

By Jesse Byrnes

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and his running mate Mike Pence are reportedly traveling to disaster-stricken Louisiana on Friday.

Trump and Pence will head to the flood-ravaged area of Baton Rouge, La., according to ABC News and CNN.

Trump opened his speech at a rally in Charlotte, N.C., on Thursday night by remarking on the "heartbreak and devastation in Louisiana," and offered his condolences.

"We are one nation. When one state hurts, we all hurt – and we must all work together to lift each other up. Working, building, restoring together," he said.
President Obama on Wednesday received a briefing from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) on the deadly floods that washed over Louisiana.

About 40,000 homes had seen damage from the flooding and more than 70,000 people had registered for FEMA assistance, according to the White House.

The White House announced that Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson would visit the state on Thursday to review the scene after Obama on Sunday declared it a federal disaster.

Obama, who received his briefing by phone during his vacation to Martha's Vineyard, Mass., has received criticism for not visiting the site of the severe flooding and storms, which has left 13 people dead.

A Louisiana newspaper on Thursday called for Obama to cut his vacation short, saying, "A disaster this big begs for the personal presence of the President at ground zero."

Baton Rouge is also the site where three police officers were killed and three more wounded in a shooting last month in a city that had been in the spotlight over the police-involved shooting of a black man during a traffic stop.

Trump keeps doing this, and Hillary will be forced to work on the weekends.

So?  That's the way the game is played.  You may not like that,  but that's what it is.

I've been among the most vociferous of Trump critics here... but I give kudos on this one.  Obama, the apparent "president," despite calls to go to LA, can't be bothered to shake loose from his vacation time; meanwhile, Hillary needs her weekend rest and the trip is too much for her.  The only ones left able and willing to view the damage first-hand and interact with the locals are Trump and Pence.

So... I laud Trump and Pence for going to Louisiana.

In THIS case, I'm not seeing it that way... Obama and Clinton can't be bothered, so for Trump/Pence to make that trip is a wise move.

Didn't make a judgement on it, although I don't think Trump will get anything from it.  Louisiana was going for Trump anyway and cycnicism about Trump runs deep everywhere else.

This is all part of the con.

As everything in an election year appears to be.  That said, if I were a candidate, I'd much rather have the optics of interacting with affected folks in the region than golfing or resting.

Louisiana indeed will go for Trump anyway, but not only Louisianans will see the images of his team on the ground, interacting with the locals.

One sure could have said the same about Mitt Romney, he did change on issues, I voted for him; I did not excoriate him.

I am definitely not a Trump fan, but on this he is displaying compassion and leadership; especially since our current president can't be bothered. He deserves credit on this one.

It also highlights the media hypocrisy over the treatment of Bush versus the treatment of Obama, which has been one of Trump's recurring themes about how the press is in the tank for Democrats.

For some reason, Republicans and Conservatives think it's beneath them to engage in optics.     But the Democrats has eaten their lunch by using optics to their advantage.    Like it or not,   that's just what you have to do to win these days.
