What is the difference between a Navy pilot and an Air Force pilot?

ATLANTIC OCEAN (July 18, 2016) An F/A-18F Super Hornet assigned to the Flying Eagles of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 122 performs a touch-and-go landing on the flight deck of the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73). Ron Wagner, USAF veteran

Air Force pilots flare when they land. Naval Aviators do not.

Considering that at one point in our lives we were all most likely torn between which branch to fly for, and could have gone either way, you won’t be surprised that there is little difference in flying skills between the two in most aspects.

But when I became an airline pilot, I flew with a lot of former Naval Aviators and discovered that the old carrier pilots never fully recovered from their instinct to not flare. On most days, you couldn’t tell the difference, but in hairy landing conditions, those former carriers guys reverted back to their amygdala reactions and would slam it on the runway.

I used to travel so much for work, I got to know the pilots and staff from my local hop to a major airport pretty well. We would joke that you could tell who the Navy pilots were versus former Air Force. The AF pilots would use the entire runway for takeoffs and landings and it would be smooth. The former Navy guys would come in at a steep angle and as soon as they touched down, threw the engines in reverse jerking everyone around.

It makes no difference at what airfield where you might happen to be, the difference is obvious.  If a plane lands and disappears in a could of smoke from burning tires its a navy pilot.

My mother had two cousins who were pilots in Vietnam. The fighter pilot was Navy I believe and I think the chopper pilot was Army.

I posted a couple picks of Uncle Jim on graduation day at Fort Rucker over here that those of you with military background would probably know more about than I do.

Those boys are a breed all their own.  Astronaut/Pilot/Test Pilot....they really did some incredible ground-breaking flying in that bird...nothing else is anything like it.

So, I guess Marine pilots get rolled in with Navy?

We lost one at Miramar last night.

That's a possible next for my son when/if he completes at Meridian, MS

I'm lost on this thread. I can't tell the difference.
I was never on the plane when it landed.

Could have been because it was San Diego Airport, but landing and take-off were very fast. Love flying, especially then to watch kiddo grad from boot. Southwest was great. Question is, would you rather have a navy pilot or air force pilot going into and out of San Diego?

Ours made an announcement that there was a new Marine on board and my son got a stone cold look on his face. I just laughed. The man who took our tickets was a former Marine, congratulated son, and probably alerted the pilot.

Welcome aboard our family!! :bighug:  At San Diego, I would rather have the Navy pilot.  Coming over the expressway and then having to get to the runway requires a pilot who can, more or less, drop out of the sky but not crash.  Pure Navy skill.

DB Cooper..is that you?  Or just a paratrooper.

I just thought it was a funny thing to say, that's all.

Yes, I have been in some pretty sever landings where the pilot basically flew over an area and then said, Hey, I think that's a runway down there. Let's see if we can land on it, whatever it is. And we did. Even though it felt, to me, like a crash landing, the pilot knew what he was doing (I guess) and everything was alright.

No idea what service the pilots were in. Most of the time I never saw the pilots. But the take off and landing depended on too many factors to make a generalization. The length, the weather, the type of aircraft, what is going on around you, even the mission would all effect how we flew, low and fast or high and tight.

Until I read this thread, it never even occurred to me to think about the pilots, or what service they were in. Never met them. Never talked to them.  They were there to do their job. I was there to get somewhere. That was the extent of our relationship. Just cogs in a machine. They always got me there.

We were all just separate parts of a bigger mission.

Now I feel bad. The cockpit was open, I probably should have said hello, or something, I guess. I really never thought about it.

The guy who taught me to fly made it to Delta flying 747s and was never in the military.  He just always wanted to be an airline pilot and he made it.  It is the land of opportunity, except to liberals who don't like that thought.
