Because ego. Any slight to that ego has to be responded to in his mind.

That's ok on an elementary school playground. A bad quality on a candidate. Should Trump lose to Hillary, he'll only have himself  to blame. I'm a never Trumper but not a dug in heels, committed one. So far, I've heard nothing to convince me or to at least soften it
