This seems (a) rudimentarily true and (b) not something you’d expect to hear from Trump’s VP-in-waiting the day after five cops were murdered by a black nationalist.

Trump himself took an uncharacteristically judicious line in his own statement this morning, calling the Sterling and Castile shootings “senseless” and “tragic” and asking for “love and compassion” to help heal a racially divided country. The money line, though, was this: “We must restore law and order. We must restore the confidence of our people to be safe and secure in their homes and on the street.” That’s the message you’d expect a strongman with an overwhelmingly white base to emphasize after an anti-white attack: I’ll protect you from crazed black activists. Now here’s Newt, who might well be running the government next year as Trump’s right-hand man, countering with a different message: Black activists have a point that’s worth considering, provided it’s expressed without violence. Huh.

Matt Lewis made a similar point today about learning what interactions with cops can be like for blacks through the terrible magic of smartphone video:

This default assumption that the police officer was always right is, I’m sure, what a lot of well-meaning and decent middle class white people were raised to believe. Sure, there were incidents of police abuse, we were told, but those were very rare—and mostly happened in the Deep South. If you had to take someone’s word, you would always go with a police officer over the word of some random citizen (and, let’s be honest, for many Americans, this was especially true if that citizen was a minority).

It’s important to note that I’m not talking about overt racists here. Many of the white Americans who reflexively trusted cops would never personally discriminate against someone, nor would they use a racist slur. But they have outsourced their concerns about crime to the authorities, and part of the deal is that you don’t micromanage this work. It is understood that you may have to crack some eggs to make an omelette. And this was fine so long as they had plausible deniability.

Those days are gone.

I applaud Newt's statement.  This is the sort of crisis that requires true leadership,  to be a leader that unites and heals.   

This represents an opportunity for Trump, to show his chops in addressing a real crisis, affecting Americans in their daily lives in real time.   If Trump (and Newt) can credibly speak for the nation and not their faction,  then they will earn the respect, and even the votes, of many of us who've condemned Trump as unfit, unprincipled and dangerous.

I think if the Trumpsters are expecting him to tell the truth about race, they're going to be severely disappointed. I wouldn't be surprised to see Trump have Jesse Jackass and Al Sharptongue visiting the White House if he gets elected.
Meanwhile, big Trump backer Rush Limbaugh had Heather MacDonald on his show today talking the facts about black violence. Rush even mentioned the huge crime rates of blacks.  That's the first time I've heard him state them.

Of the black Ted Cruz supporters I've encountered most have said they like Ted Cruz because he seldom mentions race. They see him as a man who treats all people the same. A black British journalist following his campaign around for a while wrote that the crowds were mostly white but very polite and the minorities in attendance were just another smiling face in the crowd.

Conservatives don't want to be pandered to. Conservatives want equal treatment.

Calvin Coolidge was probably the greatest fighter for civil rights we've ever had in the white house but he isn't really known for it because he was a strict constitutionalist and didn't use the power of the presidency to push equality much. He did work to purge government of the klan members Wilson installed throughout govt .

He was Reagan's favorite president and the ideal of what conservative republicanism should be.

When I was a little kid in the 60's I remember being scared by all the race riots.  I remember there were even stabbings and things in the schools.  I went to a nearly all black school for a brief time and was repeatedly threatened and told I would be beat up.  I and all other whites were not allowed to go outside during recess.  It was scary.  I was in the 3rd grade.  When my sister was in the 7th grade her school had a big problem with race related violence.  Through the years we have made so much progress.  I now live in the same general metro area that I did when I was a little kid.  Overwhelmingly the races get along just great.   Most really do not care about skin tone.  But along comes Obama and now we see a replay of those past wars.  It's really tragic.

I grew up in Lynwood,CA in the sixties, it was a nice little town surrounded by Watts, Southgate and Compton and never even thought about race..........until the Watts riots. After the riots it wasn't really safe for a single White kid to walk in the park, or for White girls to go swimming in the Plunge without getting groped, around the same time there started to be a whole lot of animosity from the Hispanics to the White kids in school. I have thought about it a lot since the cockroach took up residence in the White House and I believe that all of this didn't start eight years ago, it started with LBJ and the democrats plan to undermine the Blacks and Black family units under the guise of their great socialistic program in order to keep Blacks and the poor under their thumb and voting democrat through dependency.
