Trump says ‘sanctuary cities’ should lose funding

By Dave Workman - May 18, 2016

In an on-air interview with KVI-AM’s morning host John Carlson in Seattle on Wednesday, presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump blasted the idea of so-called “sanctuary cities,” and said that as president, he would withhold funding from those cities.
He called such cities “a haven for criminals.”

“We have to have law and order in our country,” Trump said. “We have no law and order. When you look at the people who are pouring in and the borders are so porous.

“I want people to come into the country a hundred percent,” he explained, “but they have to come in legally. They have to come in through a process, and what’s happening now is out of control. It’s totally out of control.”

During the 20-minute-plus conversation, Trump and Carlson covered many subjects including minimum wage, trade and airport security. The interview came more than a week after Trump held two rallies in the Evergreen State and on the morning after he was interviewed by Fox News’s Megyn Kelly, with whom he had a high-profile feud, which may have been put to rest during her special. He promised Carlson that he would not surrender the state but would fight for its votes as the election approaches.

This might go against prevailing conventional wisdom because Washington is considered a “blue” state likely to be carried by whoever the Democrat nominee is. Right now, it appears that Hillary Rodham Clinton will be that person, although Sen. Bernie Sanders trounced her in the March Democratic caucuses and beat her in Oregon’s primary.

Withholding federal funds from Seattle and other “sanctuary cities” will not go over well with the liberal administrations in those Democrat strongholds. Seattle, Portland, San Francisco and Los Angeles are all “sanctuary cities,” and they are dominated by Democrats. Seattle even has a socialist member of the city council.

“We don’t need sanctuary cities,” Trump observed. “We need strong borders.”

Over 160 years ago the Supreme Court ruled in Prigg v. Pennsylvania that federal laws were the responsibility of the federal government to enforce.  States cannot hinder the government from enforcing them but they cannot be compelled to enforce the federal laws for them.

I believe the Headline states  Trump would "withhold funding." From my limited knowledge, it seems he would direct that federal block grants for local law enforcement, be reduced/cut, for communities that function in a sanctuary manner.

I favor his position.

What does Trump expect the cities to be doing?

Does the Scam Wow weasel ....never quite copying Ted Cruz?

Now the $50,000 dollar question..... "who is trustworthy"  to full-fill that promise.

Remember the woman in San Francisco that was murdered by an illegal immigrant that was supposed to be deported?

The cities are supposed to hold these people, instead of just release them. That was how that woman got murdered. SF police did not hold him for the feds.

That may not be a perfect answer, but it is part of the situation.

Like he borrowed the 'send the issue back to the states' line when trying to wriggle out of his transgender bathrooms faux pas?

I could live with Trump adapting Cruz's positions if I thought he believed and would implement them but somehow I think he's parroting them for no other reason than 'Ted said it, and I heard everyone thinks Ted is really smart.'

Please, let it go.  Cruz never mentioned building a wall, changing his support of TPP or increasing China's responsibility for N. Korea until he heard all--over and over again--from Donald Trump.

So let Cruz get some well-deserved rest and leave him alone.

Wrong. http://conservativepapers.com/news/2016/02/12/ted-cruz-wanted-to-build-a-wall-years-before-trump-ever-talked-about-it/

The other two examples are silly.

But I agree, Cruz deserves a respite from the vitriol. He's got a tough job ahead in congress continuing to try to hold back the progressive tide all by his lonesome. No matter which of the two candidates are elected.

Enough with Cruz  Leave him alone.  He lost.  He withdrew.  He's on vacation.

Enough.  Let's move on and face November.  Hopefully together.

Well, I hope it is more than a 'Suggestion" with trump.

I think it's safe to say that isn't going to happen.

The idea of not sending money to sanctuary cities makes sense. Controlling immigration makes sense. Deporting illegal immigrants, or even imprisoning them makes sense. The problem is Trump can't be trusted to actually do it. He's a liar and a cheat. Unfortunately, we don't have a candidate running who we can count on for anything. At this point I don't think there is anything Trump can do to change this. It's clear to me he knows he has a serious problem, otherwise why release the names of potential SCOTUS nominees?

But here's the problem, Skeeter---we're never going to agree on Trump v Cruz.   What you call misrepresentations, I call truth.

We can fight this fight for months and it won't change a thing.  Or you can take a page out of Cruz's playbook and stand down.  It really is time.

Maybe also take another page out of Cruz's playbook and take some time to walk away from this ... hit the refresh button.  He's taking a week, maybe you need but a day.

Anyway, I'm not looking to argue with you.  That's done.  I'm just offering you some friendly advice.
