Defense Secretary Ash Carter used a personal email account for government business for nearly a year, the Associated Press reported Saturday.
An AP Freedom of Information Act request showed that Carter used his personal account until December, when news reports revealed he’d been doing so.
Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook said in a statement that none of Carter’s emails contained sensitive information, and all of his work-related emails are preserved within the federal records system.
In December, the New York Times revealed Carter had used a personal email account.
The records AP obtained — 1,336 pages of emails — show Carter stopped using the account one day after the Times report was published, although he said he stopped months before that.
Carter apologized for using the account in December.
“It’s a mistake, and it’s entirely my own,” he said at the time.
The use of personal email for government business has been a hot topic since it was revealed in March that Hillary Clinton exclusively used a personal email as secretary of state.
