House Benghazi Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy says the lawyers for the man who accused the panel of taking a partisan tack against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton want all talk to go silent after a weekend of public accusations.
"They were happy to discuss it Friday, Saturday and Sunday when they were making these incendiary allegations," Gowdy said Monday on Fox News Channel's "On the Record with Greta Van Susteren." "But as soon as some facts started trickling out, now they don’t want to talk about it. They want it to be confidential."
Bradley Podliska, a former investigator for the committee, says he was fired in June partly because he opposed the committee moving from looking at the reasons for the Benghazi attack to instead focusing on Clinton's private email server.
Gowdy disputes that, saying that since Podliska hasn't been involved with the probe since June, he has no idea what the committee has done since then.
"We've done 50 witness interviews since the email story broke," Gowdy said. "Precisely one of them has been exclusively related to her email."
That was Brian Pagliano, the State Department staffer who set up the server, Gowdy said. "And as you recall … that was a really short interview because he invoked his Fifth Amendment privilege."
Gowdy said he isn't concerned about the criticism against himself, but said the staff investigating for the committee is made up of professionals who take their jobs seriously.
"I'll be damned if I'm going to let anybody besmirch their reputation," he said.
