GOP Openly Lashing Out at Base

Posted On 16 Aug 2015

By : admin

After more than a year of treating their most passionate voters like they don’t matter at all, the Republican Party is no longer even trying to hide its disdain for conservatives. The surprise success of Donald Trump has thrown the GOP into disarray, ruining their carefully conceived plans of sending Jeb Bush to the general election. And instead of taking a step back, assessing the situation, and letting the voters tell them what they want, the party is desperate to regain control of the election.

“You do not benefit by trying to draft behind Donald Trump and hope that he collapses and his low-information supporters run into your arms,” Rick Wilson, a top Republican strategist, said on CNN this week. “This is a guy who is increasingly leading a fraction of the conservative base into a very dangerous cul-de-sac. He is promising things that he can never deliver. And it is time for Jeb Bush and other folks to start posting up and really comparing and contrasting Donald Trump’s rhetoric with the reality.”

This is how GOP insiders are beginning to talk about the base. It’s not enough now that they are attacking Donald Trump; they are now turning that venom onto his supporters. They talk about how Trump’s numbers have peaked, how he can’t win the nomination with only 20 percent of the vote. What they fail to understand is that no other candidate can succeed without that 20 percent. If the GOP is dead set against throwing their support behind Trump, they’d better figure out a way to lure his voters back to one of their favored candidates. Insulting them – calling them “low-information supporters” – is not the way to go about it. Especially when there’s no indication that the label fits.

There is a tremendous opportunity here for Republicans, and they are letting it sail right past them. Trump has energized a portion of the base that hasn’t been this excited in a long time. Why would you fight that? Why, unless his message is so wildly off-brand that he doesn’t fit into the party? But if that’s true, then Republicans no longer serve the needs of conservative Americans.

You can throw a thousand criticisms at Trump and still have room for more. He’s far from the perfect candidate. But his message resonates for a reason. Conservatives aren’t desperate for a reality TV candidate; they’re desperate for someone who is as fed up with the BS as they are. And, as his campaign has exposed, that BS is coming from the Republican Party as much as it is Obama and Clinton.

Well, I certainly hope someone from the party reads this site.
It is outrageous that an officer from the party would demean it's supporters and take an obvious positions AGAINST it's own candidates.

Isn't it interesting how the GOPe would behave in a manner that gives support to a 3rd Party that would hand the presidency to Hillary?

That's some real tight reasoning there.  Trump goes third party, the election goes to Hillary and the GOP planned it all out that way. :pondering:

IMO, that's not going to happen.

Supposedly, 5 million SOCONS stayed home rather than vote for Mitt Romney.

Anybody that's been on the forums for the past 15 years knows that ONLY Social Conservatives are capable of doing that.  Rather than cast a vote for the good of the party and hold their noses....they said, "Nope!   My principles are more important than the country!"

GOP establishment people won't stay home.   They're going to be susceptible to the same fever that I've just contracted.

They will piss and moan, but they'll show up, rather than suffering through 'Obama III and Obama IV'.

For a few presidential election cycles, I've had a rising feeling that the Republican party does NOT want to win!  They don't want the responsibility, they don't want to be blamed - they do want to keep their cushy offices in Washington DC though.  Why else would people spend millions of dollars to win an office that only pays a couple of hundred thousand dollars?

They only have to play the game every four years and then they can go back to business as usual.  I mean, really.

For the sake of argument, we'll assume that the motives you project onto the GOP are accurate.

Ever ask yourself why it's the GOP that plays that game and not the Dems?  Just cause?

Yes, I have asked myself that Dan.  The inescapable conclusion is that the GOP has become every bit as big government as the Democrats are.  It's how you increase your power/money - they just have to play the game that they aren't because that was the path their Republican forefathers chose before them.  Drat!

Accepting the desire for power/money as their motivator, I would submit that the path to power/money is rather on the Republican/Chamber of Commerce side of the equation.  A more prosperous economy generates much more power/money for more people than a collapsing socialist state.

IMO, the behavior is still counter-intuitive to the generally accepted reasons given for its existence...

First they are assured by everyone including Trump that they are too tough on the "brown skinned" and need to be kinder to them or inevitably be beaten by the Dems then he comes out running for election breathing fire and brimstone at illegals and Mexico.  Trump has totally screwed them and they don't know left from right anymore.

Conservatives are NOT low information voters. They know what is going on and they hate the rino's and dems for ruining this country. They are also tired of holding their noses for the good of the party. Rino's are not one bit better than democrats not even a little in fact they are worse because they lie to get elected and then give us the finger once they are reelected unlike the democrats who give us the finger as they openly plan our countries destruction. I am like thousands of others who KNOW WHAT IS HAPPENING to this country and are sick and tired of it we are far from low information we probably know to much.

I suppose you might conclude they don't want to win if you didn't go very deep.

But if you actually considered the demographics pulling one way, and "the base" pulling the other, you could conclude it is nearly impossible to win.

More minorities, more liberal societal attitudes, but a base that denies those facts, and insists on pursuing unpopular positions. My example is pushing to oppose abortions in the case of rapes.

And then there is the possibility the White Shoe Brigade KNOWS Jeb is no match Hillary but to keep their funds rolling in instigate Trump (or some other wealthy, egotistical patsy) to run 3rd party and walk away without blame and the continued legacy to blame the loss on.
There's several born every minute and the GOP-E White Shoe Brigade depend upon it for the best steaks, wine and what-have can buy.
Why?  Well, because I'm a bastard, that's why.

The problem I see with this article is that it assumes that Trump supporters are the GOP base.

Where has that been proven?

I'd hazard that they are the closest thing the GOP has to the low-information, politically-disconnected independent.
