BREAKING: 9 dead in shooting at historic Charleston African American church. Police chief calls it ‘hate crime.’

Police are searching for a gunman who opened fire Wednesday night at a historic African American church in downtown Charleston, S.C. Charleston officials said nine people were killed and others were injured.

“I do believe this is a hate crime,” Charleston Police Chief Greg Mullen said at a late night news conference, without explaining the basis for his conclusion.

Police said the victims had gathered Wednesday night in the Mother Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in downtown Charleston for a prayer meeting when the shooting occurred. Police are now searching for the suspect, described as a clean-shaven white male in his early 20s, who has sandy blond hair and a small build. Police said he was wearing a gray sweatshirt, blue jeans and Timberland boots. He is believe to be the only shooter.

“This is the most unspeakable and heartbreaking tragedy in historic Emanuel AME church, the mother church of the AME churches,” Charleston Mayor Joseph Riley said. “People in prayer Wednesday evening, a ritual coming together, praying and worshiping God. To have an awful person come in and shoot them is inexplicable. Obviously the most intolerable and unbelievable act possible.”

“The only reason someone could walk into a church and shoot people praying is out of hate,” he added. “The only reason. It is the most dastardly act that one could possibly imagine.”

Immediately labeled a hate crime because the perp was white and the victims black. Somehow, when the roles are reversed, there's no such declaration.

I don't see anything in this AP story about the shooter actually saying anything hinting of racial hatred.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — A white man opened fire during a prayer meeting inside a historic black church in downtown Charleston, killing nine people, including the pastor, in an assault authorities described as a hate crime.

The suspect attended the meeting at the church Wednesday night and stayed for nearly an hour before the deadly gunfire erupted, Police Chief Greg Mullen said.

The shooter remained at large Thursday morning and police released photographs from surveillance video of a suspect and a possible getaway vehicle. Mullen said he could not offer a make and model on the dark colored sedan because investigators were not certain about what is shown in the video.

The victims of the shooting were six females and three males, Mullen said Thursday morning. He did not give other details about the victims.

Mullen said he believed the attack at the Emanuel AME Church was a hate crime. The suspect was described as a white man in his early 20s.

"This is a very dangerous individual," Mullen said during a 6 a.m. news conference.

"We want to identify this individual and arrest him before he hurts anyone else," the chief said.

Mullen said he had no reason to think the suspect has left the Charleston area, but was distributing information about him and the vehicle around the country.

Mullen said the scene at the church was chaotic when police arrived, and the officers thought they had the suspect tracked with a police dog, but he got away.

"We will put all effort, we will put all resources and we will put all of our energy into finding this individual who committed this crime tonight," he said.

The FBI will aid the investigation, Mullen told an earlier news conference that was attended by FBI Special Agent in Charge David A. Thomas.

Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr. called the shooting "an unfathomable and unspeakable act by somebody filled with hate and with a deranged mind."

"Of all cities, in Charleston, to have a horrible hateful person go into the church and kill people there to pray and worship with each other is something that is beyond any comprehension and is not explained," Riley said. "We are going to put our arms around that church and that church family."

State House Minority leader Todd Rutherford told The Associated Press that the church's pastor, state Sen. Clementa Pinckney, was among those killed.

Pinckney 41, was a married father of two who was elected to the state house at age 23, making him the youngest member of the House at the time.

"He never had anything bad to say about anybody, even when I thought he should," Rutherford, D-Columbia, said. "He was always out doing work either for his parishioners or his constituents. He touched everybody."

In a statement, NAACP President and CEO Cornell William Brooks condemned the shooting.

"There is no greater coward than a criminal who enters a house of God and slaughters innocent people engaged in the study of scripture," Brooks said.

The attack came two months after the fatal shooting of an unarmed black man, Walter Scott, by a white police officer in neighboring North Charleston that sparked major protests and highlighted racial tensions in the area. The officer has been charged with murder, and the shooting prompted South Carolina lawmakers to push through a bill helping all police agencies in the state get body cameras. Pinckney was a sponsor of that bill.

In a statement, Gov. Nikki Haley asked South Carolinians to pray for the victims and their families and decried violence at religious institutions.

"We'll never understand what motivates anyone to enter one of our places of worship and take the life of another," Haley said.

Soon after Wednesday night's shooting, a group of pastors huddled together praying in a circle across the street.

Community organizer Christopher Cason said he felt certain the shootings were racially motivated.

"I am very tired of people telling me that I don't have the right to be angry," Cason said. "I am very angry right now."

Even before Scott's shooting in April, Cason said he had been part of a group meeting with police and local leaders to try to shore up relations.

The Emmanuel AME church is a historic African-American church that traces its roots to 1816, when several churches split from Charleston's Methodist Episcopal church.

One of its founders, Denmark Vesey, tried to organize a slave revolt in 1822. He was caught, and white landowners had his church burned in revenge. Parishioners worshipped underground until after the Civil War.

The nerd or geek look is becoming popular, kind of a counter to hipsters scruffy look. Think Big Bang Theory popularity. I've been seeing this with younger hires.

The definition of what constitutes a "hate crime" seems to be "something done by a straight, white, right-wing, Christian person on some one who doesn't fit the previous description.

According to DoJ stats, 84% of whites killed yearly are killed by other than whites.

Why aren't those labeled "hate crimes"?

Since the deed was committed in a black church setting, while he was sitting for an hour before shots rang out.....it's a hate crime.

It was obviously premeditated. Nothing compulsive about it.

I agree however that a healthy proportion of that 84% you cited, are based on race and not simply random acts.

The suspect accused of fatally shooting nine people at Emanuel AME Church Wednesday night has been identified.
Charleston Police have identified the shooter as 21-year-old Dylann Roof, of Lexington, SC. Authorities say a manhunt is underway for Roof.

Roof is described as a white male, 21 years old, slender/small build, gray sweat shirt, blue jeans and clean shaven. He is believed to be driving a dark in color Hyundai Elantra with vehicle tag LGF330.

The suspect is considered armed and dangerous.

Public records show Roof was most recently arrested in March in Lexington County on drug charges.

According to police, nine people were killed after shots were fired during a prayer meeting inside Emanuel AME Church on Calhoun Street around 9:05 p.m. Police Chief Greg Mullen said officers arrived to find eight people dead inside the church. A ninth victim died later at a nearby hospital.

Three people survived the attack, Mullen said.

Elder James Johnson, President of the Charleston Chapter of the National Action News, said SC Senator Clementa C. Pinckney was one of the nine shot and killed inside the church. Pinckney, 41, served as pastor for Emanuel AME in addition to his role as a state senator for District 45.

Mullen said Roof sat through an hour-long bible study before he began shooting church members. He then fled the scene.

Charleston Police released surveillance photos of the suspect during a 6 a.m. news conference. He was later identified by authorities shortly after 10 a.m.

Mullen said the shooting occurred during a prayer meeting at the church. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the nine victims, but did say three males and six females were killed.

Not going to disagree, but can't help but notice that unlike Michael Brown and Trayvon Martin, who had police records, they are using the perp photos rather than him as a smiling teenager.

CBS News: Gunman In Deadly Church Shooting Caught

CHARLESTON, S.C. (CBS Atlanta/AP) — A federal law enforcement tells CBS News that the suspect behind the deadly Charleston, South Carolina, church shooting has been caught.

CBS News reports that 21-year-old Dylann Storm Roof was apprehended in Shelby, North Carolina, nearly three hours away from Emanuel AME Church.

Roof is accused of killing nine people, including the pastor, at the historically black church. Authorities called it a hate crime.

It's really impossible to hideway from the government/law if you have a cellphone with the battery still in it. They can find you within a couple of feet.

I updated my smartphone a couple of days ago.

Took a couple of pics of amazing lilies in my friend's backyard. Also pics of my two new kitties.

Imagine my shock when I went to the gallery to view them. THE NAME OF THE STREET on which the pics were taken appear whenever you click on them.

It's no wonder they captured him so quickly.
