A man with a rifle has shot a soldier at the National War Memorial in Ottawa, just steps away from the Canadian Parliament building, according to media reports.
Police told CBC that the shooter is not yet in custody.
There are also reports of gunfire inside the halls of Parliament, according to The Associated Press. Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has been taken to safety, Canada.com reports.
Emergency responders are on the scene. CPR was being performed on the victim at the war memorial – which is guarded by soldiers around the clock – before he was taken to a hospital, Canada.com reports.
Ottawa police confirmed they had a call at 9:52 a.m. with a report of shots fired.
The gunman then reportedly ran toward Parliament Hill, which is under lockdown.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are asking people to stay away from the area.
Scott Walsh, who was working on Parliament Hill, told CBC that he saw a man running with a double-barrelled shotgun, wearing a scarf and blue jeans. Walsh said the man hopped over the fence that surrounded Parliament Hill and forced someone out of their car, then drove to the front doors of the Parliament building and fired at least two shots.
The incident comes just two days after two Canadian soldiers were run over -- and one of them killed -- in Quebec by a man with jihadist sympathies.
