Rhode Island Firefighters Rescue 'Struggling' Yellow Lab Who Fell Through Frozen Pond

Firefighters in Rhode Island braved freezing water to rescue a dog after the pet fell into an icy pond while on a New Year's Day walk.

According to a Facebook post from the Misquamicut Fire Department (MFD), a yellow Labrador retriever named Phoenix was walking with his owner down the coastal locale's Atlantic Avenue when he wandered onto Little Masachaug Pond and "fell through a thin layer of ice near the center" just before 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 1.

AccuWeather reported that Misquamicut reached lows of 15 degrees on Thursday.

Fire officials said that firefighters, as well as the Westerly Police Department, Westerly Ambulance Corps, Inc., and Watch Hill Fire Department, were dispatched to the scene for a water rescue.

We agreed to Foster a Bichon Shitzu mix, that had been severely abused by Children and went through 2 elderly owners. The last one had to surrender him when hit bit a neighbor ion her Senior care building. He absolutely hated Vergette and I for 3 months. Took him another 6 months to begin to warm up. Almost 3 years later he now won't let me sit on the recliner by myself. Begs to come up and will sit on my lap for 2-3 hours.

I had a similar situation with a German Shepard that I agreed to foster after her owner, a friend of mine, had to go to a nursing home. Of course she ended up living here until she died. But in the beginning, boy oh boy was she surly!! She eventually calmed down, made friends with my other dogs and me. She became very protective and wouldn't let a stranger in the house...or knock on the door...or just be around here.

Within the past 60 days we took in a handsome male mini schnauzer which had previously been abandoned and abused badly. $1000.00 worth of vet bills and lots of TLC has brought him back to being the loving, playful little guy he was intended to be.

We currently have three dogs. All rescues and we love them all.

I got my little guy in 2019 from the Humane Society of Southeast Texas. He was already elderly at that time, blind in one eye with the other eye sure to follow eventually. But he needed a loving home and I needed a dog to love. He's still with me and, as of a year and a half ago, he's totally blind. But he's well loved and taken care of. This old geezer (me) prepares grass-fed/finished hamburger meat for his meals every week. I should eat so well.
