Giant pandas will arrive at D.C.'s National Zoo this week

Two giant pandas bound for the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., have left the Chinese city of Chengdu for their long journey to a new home.



A cargo jet operated by FedEx is transporting the pair, both aged 3 years old, the Associated Press cited the China Wildlife Conservation Association as saying in its statement.

The pair — one female called Qing Bao and one male called Bao Li — will arrive almost a year since the last giant pandas left Washington D.C. Their move is part of an ongoing conservation project with Beijing that dates back several decades and is often informally referred to as an element in China's "panda diplomacy" with several nations that includes the United States.

First lady Jill Biden was part of a group that announced their planned arrival during a video released in late May.

The National Zoo has not issued any precise details of their arrival out of security concerns, and phone calls to the zoo went unanswered late Monday. But the zoo on social media hinted at the duo's expected Tuesday arrival in announcing that the zoo would be closed that day.

Dogs are capable of forming two-word combinations when using a soundboard to communicate with humans, a groundbreaking study has found.

In the last few years, thousands of dogs have been trained to use soundboards with buttons that can be pressed to produce human words or phrases.



Some have even become social media sensations, like the TikTok famous sheepadoodle Bunny.

But scientists still weren't sure whether these 'talking' dogs were pressing buttons randomly, or deliberately.

Now, a new analysis has revealed that the dogs' behavior cannot be explained by random pressing, and that certain two-button combinations appear too often to be the result of random chance, the study states.

The researchers found that the most commonly used buttons were related to the dogs' essential needs, such as 'outside,' 'treat,' 'play' and 'potty.'

Combinations like 'outside' + 'potty' or 'food' + 'water' also occurred too frequently to be accidental, and were used in meaningful ways.

What's more, the researchers identified differences between the dogs' button pressing behavior and that of their owners.

For example, buttons like 'I love you' were pressed far less frequently by dogs than by their humans, suggesting that dogs are not imitating their owners' presses. This will be a blow to owners who believe the feelings of utter devotion are mutual.

Beautiful babies @vahawkeye ! Assuming that one is a husky...one of my most fav dogs that ever owned me was a husky/wolf mix. I still miss him. Of course, all my dogs thru the years have been the best looking, smartest evah!

Incredible moment mother dog carries her dying puppy to vet for treatment and looks on anxiously as medic tries to save the tiny pooch… before happy ending

This is the heartwarming moment a mother dog hand-delivered her seriously ill puppy to vets for life-saving treatment.

CCTV footage shows the homeless dog carrying her dying puppy in her mouth through the rain and leaving it at the door of a veterinary clinic in the Adnan Kahveci neighbourhood of Beylikduzu, in Istanbul Province, Turkey.

A veterinary technician noticed the situation and quickly brought the puppy inside for treatment on January 13.

The pup was in a bad way, with a dangerously low heart rate, and was taken to intensive care immediately.



The mother dog stayed close by, at times watching over her puppy as vets worked on her on the treatment table.

Veterinarian Baturalp Oghan revealed that the mother dog had previously given birth nearby, but most of her puppies had died.

Animal lovers had brought one surviving puppy to the clinic earlier, unaware there was another.

The mother dog later found the last remaining puppy and brought it to the clinic for help.

Yellowstone mourns loss of celebrity bison named Speedy

Speedy, a beloved bison who captivated hearts across North America, was found dead at the Yellowstone Wildlife Sanctuary in Montana on Thursday.

This 24-year-old bison, known for her gentle nature and unique story, had resided at the sanctuary since 2005.



Born a rejected twin, Speedy was hand-raised by a Montana family, saving her life. This unique beginning turned her into a local celebrity and, eventually, a beloved national figure.

B.R. Walker, the sanctuary's executive director, shared with Cowboy State Daily that the loss has deeply affected all who cared for Speedy

'She lived as normal a life as she could, and she did so beautifully for over 20 years,' she said.

'She met thousands of people in her time, and they met her. She lived beautifully and passed peacefully, but there's a great sense of loss here.'

Sharing a spacious enclosure with Luna, another bison from Nebraska, Speedy spent the remainder of her life at YWS.

While she, like many of the sanctuary's residents, could not be returned to the wild, Speedy undeniably reigned as the most popular animal.
